You don't NEED to start small, but the respect and discipline for the craft is important regardless. my first quad was a 5" that I built but this was after countless hours of research and sim time

This hobby is not for instant gratification people! It takes time to develop the muscle memory and experience to fly one of these!

Ok…I’m a beginner. Great video and I appreciate your hard work and input. I started on Liftoff today with the Radiomaster Pocket 😅 very difficult! I wanted to use the Walksnail ecosystem but found a pair of New DJI V2 goggles for $200 and couldn’t pass it up, so now I’m stuck. I was looking at something like the Pavo 20 w/ DJI Air 03, or maybe a Mobula 8. I need to find out what options I have for a VTX besides the DJI 03, if any, for the V2’s and these or similar quads. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great video Stewie!! ...I bought just a Jumper T-Lite radio many months ago and have been flying around in "Liftoff" and "Uncrashed" Simulators. I've literally saved THOUSANDS wrecking Pixel Drones before I go physical 😁❤

You really have no idea how much those intelligent drones are thinking for you. FPV experience transfers to flying regular drones, But it does not work the other way around. I think it would have been irresponsible for me to start out on a 5-in. Especially with no simulator practice.

I would liken the skill of flying a mini quad to learning to ride a bike, expect to fall and it might seem impossible at first but keep at it and it will feel quite easy, then you can start pushing yourself to do tricks. The first thing I ordered when I started was a radio and used the old Freerider sim which gave me the muscle memory I needed while building my first miniquad. I built Stew’s first $99 build with the $6 racerstar motors and learned to fly with it. If I was learning today I would start with a little 2.5 inch or whoop for sure. You won’t be able to get great footage with a GoPro until you’re more experienced IMO so it’s just another expensive thing to break or lose, you can record DVR to track your progress.

Here's my take on FPV. I started FPV without a SIM and I've still haven't flown on s SIM i started out with the baby hawk 2 HD and learned how to fly using Angle mode for the first 3 months until i got the hang of it. Then i went in an open field flew 200 feet up then switched it into acro mode then felt the difference and was like OMFG THIS IS AMAZING and realized i leveled up in the hobby and it felt amazing. To every first time pilot get HD and start in angle mode and do exactly what i did then you'll feel the HIGH. I'm on disability and the smaller the drones the cheaper the parts and never go cheap on anything cause word of thumb you get what you pay for then realize going cheap you'll lose quads in the process. I couldn't afford the $2000 laptop to fly Sims but you'll need a computer of some kind to do the configuration cause we didn't have speedybee app in 2019 and when the app did come out of didn't always work like you need it to. But betaflight has a debug version on github and that app is very good but it's not Bluetooth.

I spent 30 hours in the sim before flying. My first quad was a 5” and the hours in the sim helped sooo much. You are 💯 right in the respect thing. They are absolute weapons and need to be treated with care (not for the quad per se but for other people and surroundings)

Incredibly well spoken. I nodded and agreed on all points. I’m brand new. A month in and I started on a Cetus x, moved onto the cineape25 paired with the same pocket RM and Eachine ev200d and I’m happy with my decisions. I’ve spent a lot of hours on the sim on less weather permitting days and I’m very impressed with the quality on my “budget products” lots of research and 3 days of figuring out how the hell to bind with ELRS. This video is very much needed for new comers like myself and I thank you! Keep on keeping on! New subscriber!

I think you buy the thing you want .. I bought all the beginner gear then had to upgrade everything, That cost me more in the long run... I could see the Pocket being a solid keeper, a slow quad is just better to start with, you'll probably destroy it anyway, but for the radio and goggles just get what you want.. AG-01 gimbals are a luxury item though!!

I agree with what you’re saying but I also think the experience has to be first before having any true wants of any quality product. You can definitely want a certain something but I think it’s the vanity as opposed to functionality that catches the eyes. There’s nothing to gauge what’s good or bad you know? I switched from box goggles to diopters and now the question is do I have the lower/mid/high end diopters for the product year or did I buy something poopy? Idk lol but I love it

Thanks Stew .. I’m learning from a DJI background.. Dipping my toes into FPV… I got the Lift Off sim.. A FRSKY Qx7 , Emax Tiny2 & Freestyle 2.. The only major expense was Domintor V3 Fat Sharks with Rapid Fire … Analogue is the way to go for a Budget .. I could have done ELRS … I recently got the Eachine Moneagle DVR … I think the most daunting part isn’t the flying it’s the repairs as seems you need an engineering degree to do builds & repairs… 😀👍

Excellent video and I find your enthusiasm for FPV uplifting. But it is important to temper people's excitement with your warnings in this video. I started flying 8 years ago with line of sight 'toy' brushed motor drones. They were very sad and fragile (and cheap) drones - but it was a great way to get "stick" time and build experience up to my FPV and camera drone current fleet! I subbed to DIYFPV a while ago - I hope it can go live soon.

That's also totally a path in, and from the sound of it, it was the path for you. I think Stew's audience here is more the average person though, who doesn't have cash to blow senselessly on avoidable crashes AND doesn't have lots of free available space to do so safely without putting others or their property at risk.

Good advice.👍 I have seen kids beg their parents for FPV gear. Then trash the quad in one or two flights. They give up right away BTW I started pre KKK controlers. Set the PIDs with 3 pots. I made the frames from 10mm carbon tube and sheet aluminium. Built try copters using the v1 Arduino controllers. The VTXs were from security cameras. We were watching trappy and copying some of his inventions. I trash my quads every session. You had to enjoy failure.😂

With the FAA now regulating DRONES toy in effect maybe it time for the FAA to require an FAA Drone liscense. Part 107 only requires KNOWEDGE test maybe it should should require DUAL instruction of 20 hours and SOLO Time and a totla logged time of 40 and an Instructors endorcement to take a Flight test as a Pilot of Multi Rotors. OH a check ride for PRIVATE PILOT is $500 back in the 70's when I did it it was $50.
