The biggest problem with Coppola's version was just this! He was turned into a romantic figure. He's essentially a monster.

I had to look up who Christoph Waltz is, and apparently he's an actor which must be who you are referring to. Is he about to star in a Dracula movie or something? Also, something tells me his first name is actually Christopher... but he dropped the "er" from the end in order to stand out...but in a way that comes off as your typical Hollywood pretentiousness.

Just ordered my copy and should be here Friday. Ignominous is one of my favourite words, though I use it sparingly. Came across it in The Lost World, then Animal Farm, and at least three times in Pierre Boulle's Bridge Over The River Quai. It has a particular sound about it that enamours me. Also, if you wish to know why I haven't been making many videos lately, it is because I have been inordanately productive, and at a stage where I can easily put out 1,000 words a day. External stimuli, and KZbin, has since become irrelevant or intrusive. I am living the writer's life. Just need to get rid of my smart phone, and I shall fully cross over.

@@milesknightestrada3286 Thank you! Did you order a hardback or a paperback? I only ask because although I have received a paperback, the hardbacks still haven’t arrived for my final inspection. Author copies aren’t delivered as quickly as customer copies. I had to order a customer copy just to inspect the paperback. They’re probably fine, but I’m just paranoid about it. I’ve been slowly getting back into writing. I’m writing about an hour or so a day. I’m still trying to decide if I want to continue the gothic story I’ve been working on. It’s very familiar territory. Part of me wants to write a book about Rome, but I might do some research before I attempt it. I hope I will get back into a writing routine by mid October. Autumn weather really stimulates me creatively. I hope you don’t quit KZbin for good. You are probably my closest friend in terms of people I communicate with online. I also think you have a lot of potential in terms of videos you could do.

Film Noir; the clue's in the name of the genre. You need to include French films and many more in other languages. These here are all pretty formulaic and obvious. If you, say, started with the French director Jules Dassain (Brute Force) you'd find Riffifi. From there, maybe look up some films with the same actors, you might discover some gems. Le Samouraï, Le Cop, Red Circle, Lift to the Gallows... etc etc

Many of your choices lack the noir cinematography compared to more traditional sources. Good list for Gen Tech who lack any appreciation of b&w classics and who won't know the true attributes of noir. Meanwhile, your audience is also as cine-illiterate about BODY HEAT, CHINATOWN, and L. Well said. The ancient Greeks explained that we have about four types of knowledge, sometimes listed as Techne, Episteme, Sophia, and Phronesis. Although Techne changes over time, the Pythagorean Theorem and much of Geometry remains quite valid. So ancient, medieval, or renaissance Techne and Episteme forms only part of what we know now. However, Sophia and Phronesis, prudential and ethical knowledge (wisdom) from those times still has just as much validity now as ever before.

A lot of ancient philosophers said things that are very reasonable and true. A lot said things that do not make sense and do not apply to life at all. This almost doesn't correlate with knowledge or time. Epicurus came only several decades after Plato, but the philosophy of Epicurus is much more coherent not only than Plato, but than most philosophers that came after him in many centuries (his physical beliefs also largely correspond to modern physical beliefs, but even without that, his beliefs on human life where uniquely coherent and non-arbitrary).

Some great entries here. But I'm not sure if all of these films actually fall under the heading of 'film noir'. 'Key Largo' and 'Mildred Pierce' are classics, but they're not hard-boiled detective stories or crime stories like true films noir.
