Hi! 19M here, I'm currently writing a... kind of dark fantasy book. I don't know when I'll finish it, how the publishing business goes, or if it'll ever get translated into english (I speak spanish), but... I'm doing my best i guess. That said, I'm also kind afraid that most consumers would not be very interested in the book. This market currently has a rather close relationship between readers and writers, as every writer has been and still is a reader, and many readers aspire or wish to be writers. So writers will tend to write books they as readers would like to read, and readers will buy more of those same books. Dark-fantasy/romance books written by women are read mainly by women, and that's what's popular right now. If young men are writing less, maybe that is because young men are reading less, and this means there might be less of a target reader for the kinds of books young male writers would theoretically write, ergo less buyers and less selling prospects. I know that a well-written book is enjoyable by nearly everyone and thus shouldn't be affected by this kind of gender divide, but it still kinda worries me.

You’re so right. I’ve noticed it in both the indie author and traditional publishing communities. I also notice that there are more female literary agents than male. I don’t know if this contributes to the current romantasy genre trend, and before that the crazy amount of books centering around love triangles (maybe I’m totally generalizing though 😅). Anyway trends do come and go and maybe romantasy is just the current peak of the tide and eventually it will subside and give way to more variety, until the next trend comes along. I for one am tired of the romantasy craze, personally. But yes I’m rambling now 😅 But I do wonder if more men were involved in both the publishing industry and the writing community, if we would see a wider variety of topics on the shelves at the bookstore. It’s just something I was thinking about and then this video popped up, so this is me sharing my thoughts as a girl in my 30s, indie-publishing my poetry and fantasy from my own little corner. I just want to see more variety and more opportunities for books that deviate from the popular, social media-fueled trends and just more outside the romance-centric views that tend to go with women-dominated stories (and I’ll totally delete this if I’m offending, which is so not my intention. Again, I’m a woman myself 😅). *Edited for a few typos.

It is also true that women read more than men, which contributes to the saturation of romance in the book market. People will often choose easy and comfortable books over serious literature. Many romantic books, although not all, are essentially channels through which readers live out their fantasies. It’s the fast food of the literary world. I personally write books that are inspired by classic literature. They explore the internal struggles of the human condition. There are many such books, but they don’t get promoted on social media. Good luck with your writing!

@@batman5224Yes, I actually told my sister yesterday “these books are kind of like fast food for the brain” so we think alike about that 😂. And thank you! Good luck to you too. I subscribed 😊.
