My wife's uncle was a ball turret gunner with VT-1 (1943-1944) off of Yorktown CV-10. His TBF Avenger was shot down and lost while glide bombing a Jap carrier June 20, 1944, during the "Mission Beyond Darkness".

A big honour to have met Domenico this weekend, in such an special place, like Utah beach in France, remembering day D, the emotion in his eyes and all the feelings that i felt through him, all my respect. Biggest experience in my life that now i can relate directly to my students to help them understand the WWII. Thank you so much, you have been all very friendly. And special mention to Domenico that was so kind to share with me a bit of his wonderful labour and experience during the war. I keep the picture of us like the most value of treasures. What absolute hell this man went through. It's impossible to fathom the nightmare this guy witnessed. The 116th regiment of the 29th, specifically A Company, were the first boats to hit the beach at the Vierville draw section of Omaha Beach, also known as Dog Green sector. The most heavily defended sector because the Vierville draw section possessed the one asphalt paved road leading off the beach, which the allies deemed vital to get tanks & equipment off the beach efficiently. Same sector that was portrayed in the Saving Private Ryan movie. The first wave of boats in this sector suffered something like a 96% casualty rate. Some boats didn't have a single soldier survive long enough to touch the water. This man survived that. Unbelievable. God bless.

My Dad, Ira Frank Myers, was a medic attached to the 422nd. He has some the same photos, plus additional ones of many of the planes in the unit with the "nose art" showing. You might remember him?
@stealth7usa5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron... I never heard his name mentioned by Lt. Col. Anderson. I wonder, since John took all the photos within the presentations, that he may have known your dad and gave him duplicates of the photos. That's indeed possible. Unfortunately John died several years ago now. After he passed away, I made a tribute video in his memory. If you didn't see that, here is that link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXfTdaioedJniNE Is your father still alive?
@grandparonlifelessons66215 жыл бұрын
Before he died, my dad mentioned that he had been given the photos. But, I recall him referring to the giver as the "unit photographer". Possibly an honorary title. I have not finished looking through all of Lt. Col. Anderson's photos, but some are identical, and some were obviously taken at the same time (i.e., different views of Mickey Rooney, etc.). It is neat to see photos from someone who served in the same unit. Even though dad was not a pilot, he had some pretty interesting stories. I tried to get hime to record them, but he always refused. I tried to write them down from memory, but probably have details messed up. He went to several of the unit's reunions. I believe the last one was in Florida, probably over 20 years ago. Thanks for posting the albums.

Hey Stealth I contacted once before about Medics on Omaha but Ive got a left field question for you. My great uncle was a Crew Cheif on a KB50J that went down in the Pacific I have now researched him for over a year and Ive only just days ago gotten back the crash report from a Historian at TacTankers. He did not have any images of the plane. I have not been able to locate any images other than the sister image he gave me. I was wondering since you are Historian and have been doing this a long time as well, Is there a way you could maybe help me with locating an image of the Aircraft? He was killed when the plane went down and for years no one knew the whole story of what happened next to his brothers and his crash is not listed anywhere in USAF records. I was lucky the outfit he was in had kept a record of the crash. He may have been a Korean War Veteran and his plane went down May 8th 1957 during the Cold War. There were 3 survivors and took a year to find out who they were. I have a lot more information if you think you could help.
@stealth7usa4 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry that I didn't see this til now... 2 years later! If you haven't found it by now, the photo, I would suggest misspelling some of the key names. I would also suggest reaching out to the Air Force MIA KIA Case Office in Washington D.C. for help. You said that there is no reference to the crash in the official AF records. I'd contact their office if you haven't already as the public records might be classified. Keep digging... It took me 4 + years to discover what truly happened to my great uncle Amin. So don't give up!

My dad was with HHC of the 116th that day..Was aboard LCI 91 which was sunk just off the beach..Most of his friends were killed in the war. Dad was the only man on Omaha Beach wearing the "Ike" jacket, which was not yet "standard issue". If you ever see a pic of a man on D Day wearing that jacket on that beach, it will be him..

My Dad flew in the same Squadron as Chuck, the 711th. Dad was a Ball Turret Gunner, his name was Lynn C Dollar, I am named after him. Dad was shot down April 8, 1944 and spent the rest of the war in Stalag 17B. I'm sure Dad flew many of the same missions as Chuck, his pilot was Lt Frances Bonham and then Lt James Anderson after Bonham was promoted to Captan. There's only one surviving member of Dad's crew, he lives in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. He was the Top Turret Gunner, Ken Runkle.
@stealth7usa7 жыл бұрын
Perhaps Mr. Runkle would be interested in attending the D-Day event in Chuck's hometown of Conneaut this August? It would be great to host him there. Lynn could you reach out to him and see if he is interested? All the veteran program information can be found on the event web site, www.ddayohio.us/veterans.htm Thank you!
@Dollar7147 жыл бұрын
I will try to do this, I need to call and talk with him again, its been a while since I've called him. Being in the same Squadron, he might remember Chuck. I believe there were 12 planes in the Squadron. Mr. Runkle is still very sharp mentally and in good health. I see Bellefonte is just a three hour drive from Conneaut, and Mr Runkle has a son living nearby. Hey, thank you for doing this interview.
@Dollar7147 жыл бұрын
I was in error on the Squadron, Chuck was in the 710th. IDK where I got the 711th. Also, this is a link to the official records of the 447th. The loading lists are very interesting if you have a personal interest. 447bg.smugmug.com/ I also found the MACR , Missing Air Crew Report, ( # 4252 ) at Fold 3 , if you have access you can search for the A/C # 42-97135 , according to other pilots witness, his plane eventually exploded. The MACR is interesting reading, contains first hand accounts of what happened in the plane, might help Chuck's memory .... that's if he does not already have a copy, which if not, can be obtained.
