Why do you write "Bruks" in the title if it's pronounced "Bruk". I also wonder why almost all Americans say Bruks. Tack

I just received my Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe this afternoon. Although I am keeping the axe, I want to point out the obvious that using a high-quality small folding pull saw would be much faster, much safer, and far less tiresome than using an axe to cut down small trees 8" in diameter or less. A folding saw is also much lighter and much cheaper than an axe. However, I do get the fascination with owning axes. They are more traditional and sexier than a folding crosscut pull saw.

Years ago I saw a video on mini hatchets and the guy made splitting wedges with the mini hatchet which he used with battons he'd also made. The Old Jimbo video really was an eye opener about the capabilities of mini hatchets and using simple techniques to achieve what might initially have seemed to be impossible. Knowledge and skill enabled that mini hatchet to do truly remarkable feats. I've never been so well informed as I was watching that video, it was what helped me to decide on my first hatchet.

Exscuse me but your comparision is what in Italy we say " to compare meat with potatoes". I'm an old Italian hunter and hiker and in my adventures, let's call them so, I akways brought and still bring in my knapsacs three items: 1) a small hatchchet to quickcly and efficiently cut and split logs not more than 0,5 kg 2) a medium size bowie knife about 8 to 10 inches for most of heavy camping chores as to prepare meals and self defence against feral dogs and stray shepherd dogs which are the only real threat you can find in Italian woods 3) a folding knife with a stout blade to skin animals and for small camping and personal chores. So every really experienced backpacker or hunter won't choose between a hatchet and a bowie but will bring both. By the way during a trek in the Adirondeck I learnt that a famous early 29th century writer Washington Sears aka Nessmuk professional guide in that area gave a possibile backpacker the advice to bring exactly the three items I happend to carry on hikes and hunts with me: a medium sislzed bowie knife, a small harchet and a stout folding knife! So if are the professional I think you really are, I suggest you to read Nessmuk books and give your readers advices based also on his Adirondeck experience besides yours! P.S. I own and often bring both the Cold Steel Trail Master Carbon V and the Gransfors Outdoor Hatchet: very expensive otems but outstanding!

I'm an old Italian hiker and hunter and I always had a small hatchet with me. Because I' m also an axes collector I have seversl Gransfors axes and hatchets and one Outdoor Axe. I tried it several times to cut with it wood for a fire and other camping chores and it did properly what was meant to do. The only real problem is its outrageous price; in Italy 135,00 euro. Yes the manufacturing is fantastic but the steel according the producer is "recicled steel" and not valuable steel coming from Swedish ore as they hint in their brochures. All in all their steel looks like a C70 steel with about 0,7 C 0.7 Mn 0.25 Si. Basicallyi it's a cheap steel good for the purpose of building an axe but not real renowm swedish steel. I have an Italian hatchet built with C70 steel with similar and for me better handling caracteristics than Gransfors Outdoor and it costs 30,0 euro. All the features duration and cutting properties have resulted after a long use and abuse the same. So how can Gransfors justify a 100,0 euro differentemente between the relative prices? If Gransfors people read this notes I should like a direct answer from them! Perhaps the answer is that they produce for collectors, like me, who can pay for an item beautiful to collect but not for the everyman who cuts wood for business or household use!.

I own a Trail Master and a three Gransfors Bruks axes, but not the one you tested. My knife chops well. The axes chop wonderfully well, even the mini axe. I think technique makes a difference. We’re you snapping you wrist with the axe? With that long handle, you should have been able to generate much more head speed than with the knife.

Thank you for the video Mike:) So for the typical person going backpacking in the forrest, wouldnt the the outdoor ax make more sense, for exactly splitting wood better, to create firewood and such? Because as long as the outdoor ax carves wood well enough to help makes stakes and the likes, one has a knife for the finer carving stuff after all, but nothing else to help split than the axe.

Good comparison, but think about how you'll use it before buying... Some might say, "I'll backpack a saw too, then split what I cut with the Outdoorsman". Ok, but how thick are you willing to make repeated cuts.. then have to also split? I usually scrounge up dead/dry stuff in the 3" range, split only enough to get the fire going, then feed whole pieces I cut with a Silky or Boreal21, plus finer cutting and shaping misc stuff around camp. I split very very little and greatly prefer the Wildlife over the Outdoorsman (I have both) . The Outdoorsman is great for car camping, splitting wood cut with a chainsaw and brought along, or just keeping around the house for the firepit... but I dont care for it much at all in the wild. Honestly, the Small Forset Axe is better than these two put together...

The Outdoor axe is designed for chopping AND splitting. That’s why it’s not as prodigious a chopper..... so a similar test splitting logs. The Knife won’t stand a chance because the axe is DESIGNED to split wood.

You don't cut at the same spot. You make your cut the same width of the timber. You are only compressing the timber hitting in the same spot. The cut you made with the trail master was better because the cut was wider. What you call missed strikes. The axe is the better chopper. Try it again. I have both of these. The axe is a better tool for chopping. The trail master. Is a very good knife. But mare for tactical use.

Just an observation: EVERY axe can be sharp and EVERY axe can be blunt. For example, if you have the sharpest axe in the world but strike stones or metal with the edge, it will become dull. Also, during normal use it will become dull after a while. Meanwhile, if you take the dullest axe on earth and sharpen it very well, the axe will become very sharp.

This is perhaps the best comparison between these two tools on KZbin. I would have thought the slightly heavier, bigger-headed Wildlife Hatchet would have split better, and that the difference was between you not striking the same, but after you split several logs with each it was obvious there was a difference... and as you point out it's all in the design of the axe head. Great job!

Good job. I think you could do this test on different wood and it might turn out different, who knows. Another thing, if the Trailmaster's edge was factory, it is likely burned. I have noticed that a lot of knife factory edges fail, then after a resharpening the edge holds up better.

The right tool for the job! Go waste your money on a five hundred dollar or more knife and a good hatchet for under a hundred will be way more efficient ! This BG knife is more than efficient for the work knives our supposed to do !
