There are studies that show wild populations of bees in the us have the exact same death rate as bees in the 1970s. The bee keepers who just treat every year are suppressing the bees immunity to the mites. There are commercial aviaries that have bred their bees for mite immunity and are currently successfully keeping hives with no mite treatment. The attitude of saving every hive is not good for the bees.

@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre Okay! Thank you! 😊 I'd love to try beekeeping but my husband is allergic 😕 so I watch videos and learn and live vicariously through all of you on KZbin 😁 I have a jar of pollen that's been collected and we are supposed to consume it. I really don't like the texture nor the taste. Could I leave some outside for any bees? Would they take it?

New to beekeeping so I apologize in advance if this is an ignorant question. By removing all the supers and forcing all the field force bees into the single deep, does this not promote an instant swarm instinct more or less?? Wouldn’t the population appear to explode in the bee’s view?
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre26 күн бұрын
Welcome to beekeeping! Bees swarm just prior to the main nectar flow. For us swarming starts in Mid may. Removing all the supers in the fall works as 1 The population is dwindling then 2 It's colder so bees cluster more closely. 3 It's not swarm season

It never ceases to amaze me that we never hear any comments on the late Bill Ruzicka's method : Mite Gone. Not to be confused with Mite Away strips. I personally knew Bill, and he told me once that during the previous 25 yrs his bees had been virtually mite free. During the last 15 years of my beekeping I had the same experience. In a meeting in Airdrie, Alberta I mentioned the method and was laughed at by the provincial apiculturist. ( I thought to myself; who paid you to laugh at me ?) Maybe part of my problem was that I don't have a phd to my name ? In our area here in southern Alberta the right time to treat is in the middle of April and in the middle of august. I have personally tested the method by using sticky boards with a # 8 screen overe top of it. Watchmaker's glasses , 10x magnification used for locating mites, Sticky boards covered wit a 50/50 mix of petroleum jelly and cooking oil. I tested 8 hives in a yard with 25 hives. Pr. 24 hrs the mite drop was abt 2 mites pr hive.. This was done during the first part of April before the spring treatment, thus showing the efficiency of the August treatment in the previous fall. Bill's original web site is taken off, but I recommend anyone who is interested to contact James Hoetmer in northen Alberta, who bought Bill's business and is still making the pads. ( [email protected]). Mite Gone totally removed my worries about the varroa mite as long as the treatment was properly performed at 15th of April and on the 15th of August. During those 15 yrs I never lost a single hive because of the varroa !

After nearly 40 years of beekeeping I began experimenting with overwintering singles and I've experienced great success. However, I insulate the 10 frame box using foamboard; I also eliminated the upper ventilation entirely leaving a small entrance at the bottom board. It's apparent that the lifespan of worker bees has been shortened making successful overwintering more difficult; reducing space and the stress from cold has made all the difference.
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre26 күн бұрын
Great to hear singles are working out for you. We all have to adapt our management to our local conditions. I've had brown icicles hanging out the bottom entrance when I've tried eliminating the upper entrance. That was with insulation all around. Our humidity is high here all year long.

great video. What is it that you are using on top of the hives just under the outer cover?
@UoGHoneyBeeResearchCentre23 күн бұрын
Hi There This is from our FAQ Q2: Why do you use canvas for the inner cover? A2: We use canvas inner covers for a few reasons. They make it easy to take a quick peek in the hive, and are cheap and easy to make. They are light, the lids sit down well, there is less excess wax on the frame top bars, and we rarely need to scrape the inner cover. Ants are also less likely to take up residence on a canvas inner cover. We use 18 oz (#8) canvas - otherwise known as cotton duck. There will be some shrinkage, so cut it to 1/4″ wider and longer than the length and width of the box. It is available in the USA online here, in Canada at here, or in Hamilton, Ontario here. Bees chew through thin canvas so a heavier weight is better. We flip it over periodically when new so the bees thoroughly coat it with propolis. An alternative is a feedbag folded in half. Please watch the video “Our Equipment” for more details on the inner cover.

Probably requires different techniques depending on the number of hives you manage. The mom and dad with a couple of dozen hives in the back yard, small commercial operators with a hundred or more, or the major commercial operators will all be looking at different levels and methods of management. The mom and dad bee keepers can try different forms of infusions. In australia we have a massive opportunity to see what natice plants may be effective.

2 Things. 1 I use a spray bottle and it acts like a smoker as well.I pull the frames one by one and spray both sides. Why does it only last a day or so though? Where does it go if the crystals don't evaporate off the bees? Just a simple mix of a table spoon or two per quart of just water and I think it works well. 2 Is that a bee keepers stack of boxes in the back ground or a bee keepers totem pole.😁
