How did you secure the wood blocks you put in the side edge gaps between the closet frame and wall before adding the trim? Did you use nails through the closet frame into the wood blocks? Or secure the wood blocks to the wall some other way?
@xacresestate14 күн бұрын
Hi, Mostly pressure and a little glue. Just needed to stop the back and forth movement, and really could have gotten away without any if it wasn't for the trim i was adding. Tried to avoid screwing the visible side of the cabinet. GL!

Given your carpentry skills and shop setup, I am curious about how the price of the IKEA system compares to what you could build yourself. I have a similar IKEA closet and once you add in all of the goodies it’s hardly a bargain. Then again - I didn’t get an estimate for a custom closet company to build a closet system for me. What are your thoughts?
@xacresestate29 күн бұрын
Yes definitely doable, just would have taken me twice as long. Ikea just had finished drawings, shelves, rods, inserts etc. We just wanted something in faster but definitely doable from scratch. There are a lot of jigs now that can do the same thing if you have the time and patience to do it... maybe next closet we will try from scratch ;)

is there a specific or suggested location? "Appears to be the 5th hole from the bottom and top, from my 'instructions'... Thank you
@xacresestateАй бұрын
Hi, I did 8th from the top, (1 above my shelf location so it was hidden when looking from the ground). Then I did 3rd from the bottom ( i am sure fifth is fine - if you don't have any shelves going there) and 24th from the top (middle-ish) to close the gap. If you are not adding trim i would just take a couple small clamps if you have them and see what areas need it and will close the gaps before committing to any locations. GL!!

I love the back of the cabinets!! I've seen them lines with wallpaper and contact paper, but never fabric. An awesome idea!
@bcr8tve2 ай бұрын
I've replayed this several times and it appears you are stapling on the good side of the fabric? If not, the back of the fabric looks just as beautiful as the front. In hind site, do you wish you had gone ahead and attached the ikea back after installing fabric so that if you press against the fabric, it doesn't pucker? Great buy for $6/metre and only $180 for the entire closet - even though that was 2 years ago.
@xacresestate2 ай бұрын
Thanks! It's woven fabric not screen printed so the design shows up on both sides. Price was great and Canadian dollars! We found it on clearance and bought extra to make pillows and accents. The back of the cabinet is right up against the wall, so it is like have the backing there, you cannot tell the difference and does not move at all. The only time I regretted not putting the Ikea backing on was when we were standing the cabinet up, I would have liked some extra rigidity, but once it was in place and screwed to the other cabinets it was fine. If I only had 1-2 freestanding cabinets I would install the backing to give it a little more support. Next time I would install them just so I did not have to throw them out. (we also sold some). GL!

What sizes did you buy the fabric in? I am buying some for ours and would like to make sure I buy enough lol
@xacresestate6 ай бұрын
Hiya, we used the flappy backing to get the fabric measurements. Standard fabric roll for us was 58" from our local fabric shop, just measured the height on the cabinet and added a couple inches for good measure and off cuts. we bought WAY more than we needed but can use them on pillows or something lol GL!
@melindahaiden6 ай бұрын
with the fabric you were not worried about mounting these to the wall itself? like ikea says it needs to be? wouldnt they fall over eventually? currently my husband I just bought our system and did NOT wanna install the backing it came with.. so this gives me a GREAT idea.. what is the exact measurement for the fabric u bought? thanks for the help! :)
@xacresestate6 ай бұрын
Thank you! The fabric store we have here locally has a standard width for fabric rolls, our roll was 58" wide and we knew we had the 8' cabinets so we bought enough to cover the full length +/- a couple inches.( times 8 cabinets). You can still install the backing if you want after the fabric, one thing we didnt try was gluing the fabric to the backing but that might work as well. I secured the cabinets to the side walls and on top of the cabinets to the walls, didnt use ikea's metal brackets to secure to the wall inside the cabinet.. if it was 1 or 2 free standing cabinets it might have, but 4 screwed together wasn't going anywhere, although I did secure it to the walls above the cabinets for good measure. Best of luck with yours, Hope it turns out awesome!

For real did you not put the original backing ti the cabinets and left it just with this canvas? I don't see any other diagonals either - this has to be the flimsiest closet ever made :O
@xacresestate6 ай бұрын
Yea I think the fabric might be more sturdy then the original backing from ikea lol. Once they were screwed together it was solid. I didn't show it in the video but was also glued and screwed to the side and back walls from top. Can see some of it in the LED video. Thanks
