So isnt the red card "momentum" linked to having an extra player on the field? It seems "momentum" is just a catch all, vague word for sports psychology

Most players play college and are recruited and scouted and have to try out and play minor league ball for a while before the majors. A no hitter is a game where no one gets a legal hit but might get on base with an error or a walk. They are thrown more often than perfect games. A perfect game is an absolutely amazing achievement. It’s when no one gets on base. 3 batters up and 3 batters out every half inning. The pitcher must complete the full 9 innings of pitching. Only 24 people in 150 years of mlb have ever pitched a perfect game. Up until the early 1990’s more people had walked on the moon than thrown a perfect game.

This was a year ago, and of course he basically repeated the incredible 2021 season in 2022 but better pitching and somewhat less hitting prowess. He is unique. Any suggestion that others could follow in his footsteps is gross exaggeration and fails to take into account all that goes into being a two-way player. It isn't just about "talent". It's about superior talent along with a phenomenal ability to do the work required for both pitching and hitting, absorb the mental stress and physical workload involved. Other MLB players have said they marvel at what Ohtani is doing, and MLB pitchers have commented that it's hard enough just to recover from your day on the mound and be ready a few days later to pitch again. Do not underestimate the supreme talent and fitness it takes to do what Ohtani has done so far. Also, it's clear that Ohtani actually thrives from combining the two ways of playing. He feels he does better at both pitching and hitting when he's combining them. That in itself is amazing. And he's managed to stay virtually free of injuries for two years while regular position players including Trout have succumbed to injuries. I hope that he stays healthy so we can see just how much more Ohtani can achieve.

The reason pitchers have become worse hitters is PRECISELY because of the Designated Hitter from little league forward. Plus if you have a pitcher who can also hit, coaches will put them out in the field rather than on the mound. This subtracts talent from the pitching.

A pitcher is definitely the hardest working athlete on the field. maybe not the best athlete, but the hardest working by far. they typically need 3-4 days rest after pitching or they'll end their entire career and blow their arm out. that's how much strain throwing 100 pitches causes. an MLB pitcher has an arm like superman to reach that level.

If you want to see the best change up pitcher, watch videos of Jamie Moyer. His fastball sucked. His fastball topped out at about 85 mph. But, that guy could throw every pitch for a strike at totally different speeds. He'd throw it 85, then 72, then 79, then 66. Then 85 again. Batters got so frustrated they could never establish their timing. He could also paint the corners. Also, since he threw it so slow, he never blew out his arm and played until he was 48 years old, which is absolutely shocking. There are 7 other MLB players who were older, but most were in the game a hundred years ago or nearly that. Back when the game was totally different. He's one of my baseball heroes. Not super famous, but super awesome, nonetheless!

Please take this video with a grain of salt. This dude clearly has a bone to pick or some additional motivation besides being a fan of baseball. Here's my view on all this old vs new controversy, from an old fan to a new fan: I'm glad you and maybe many others like you are taking an interest. I think that is good for you, good for baseball, good all around. Here's the catch though: I like people to get interested in the game, so long as it remains the game. The issue is that the "exciting" parts of the game (home runs, diving catches, strikeouts) can be so spectacular that, to new fans, they seem like the only positives, and they start demanding more of them. So we get calls for DHs. The time between batters is too long too, so we get a pitch clock. But still, we have home run fans paying good money here, we need to cut down on the pitching changes, so theres a new rule about that. Now the new fans hate the umpires, so they're working on robotic umpires. See the pattern? The problem is, these are fair-weather fans. Its like a company...you can only cook the books so much until the people who really were never into baseball get tired of watching home runs sail out. Now you have to either change again or hope the original fans you ignored when there was extra money on the table are still interested. As a fan of how the game is currently, I have no vested interest in MLB getting more exciting and popular. I just want them to keep playing the game I love.

this is what keeps happening with a ton of sports unfortunately. it's less about the sport and more about the things deemed "spectacular", as you put it, and those things are very very rarely good for the sport itself when they become the main - if not only - focal points. like i can't tell you just how many times it's happened. "I like people to get interested in the game, so long as it remains the game" is simple and also the best way i've seen it be worded, your entire comment articulates all of this very well

Somewhat confused by a racial component being squeezed in.... So, 72.4% black players, 16.9% white players in the NBA ; 70% black players, 29% white players in the NFL is equality....but the demographics that exist in MLB are are the result of the failure to implement social justice policies???? It's hard to be a 2 way player in mlb, let alone be an elite one, mvp caliber like Ohtani, it is very demanding to the body. Pitchers literally go on a vacation for rehab everytime they pitch, but Ohtani bats and hits dingers the very next day. He trains daily, no social life lol lots of sacrifice to be where he is. idk if we'll get another one like him. anyway, love seeing football fans reacting to Shohei, he's a goalie and a striker in one body lol more ohtani reactions pls! may i recommend this one, it shows the week of Ohtani and how he won the Rookie of the Year in 2018. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fH_dfIOHmKahoMU

He has been playing in the MLB for a few years but it is his first full season so I think other teams are going to wait a few years before they decide on whether or not they want to commit to a two-way player. CC Sabathia even mentioned in the video that they took that clip that was shown that if Ohtani had signed with the Yankees that based on his spring training performance, they would have shut that down and everyone who follows him knows that he struggles in spring training both here and in Japan. Folks want him to leave the Angels since their team is below .500 but I feel like they were the only team who would have given him this type of chance and also given him the type of freedom he has to make it. Between GM and manager, they allow him to tell him how he is doing and how they will move forward. What other GM and manager would do the same? Angels know through trial and error that he needs to dictate his own pace in order for him to play well. Will it last? I hope so.

Ohtani is having a historic year, hitting and pitching at an exceptionally high level. MLB is marketing him aggressively. They're trying to take the game global, like the NBA did, and Ohtani is the perfect guy to accomplish this. However, Ohtani has been hitting very poorly for the last 45 games. His average is around .200. And his home runs are also way down. This happens in baseball. The league figures out your weaknesses. Now it's up to Ohtani to make the necessary adjustments. We'll see if he can. His pitching has remained very solid. Comparing him to Babe Ruth is a stretch. Babe's lifetime average was over .340. Ohtani is basically a .250 hitter, nearly 90 points less, an enormous difference.
@ykyang5786

The weakness here is that they are pitching him outside the zone. He still wants to hit bombs so he chased a lot more than he should. If you look at his walks, that has gone way up because there's no one protecting him in the line up. Once Trout and Rendon comes back, things should change a little.

Babes life time avg was .340 facing mostly just fast balls. Shohei faces slider, splitter, all these other types of pitchers, and pitchers have all these computer datas against ohtani. Also ohtani has no protection in the lineup. .250 now is comparable to .325ish back in the days. Yet ohtani still performs at this level. Idk ohtani surpassed babe at least for this season in my opinion.

You can't hit if pitchers won't pitch to you. Texas did in the last series and he got some really good hits in. Seattle tried to pitch to him and he rocketed off two triples. He has seen too many walks and I would argue that even when he strikes out it is sometimes because he has to swing at non-strikes because of the lack thereof. Yes, no home runs of late but he is trying to find his swing again and it is looking better. He even started to hit more to left field instead of pulling all of his hits.

I feel that universal DH is probably inevitable because MLB seems very focused on increasing fan interest and excitement, and power hitting is exciting. That and the way has become so specialized by position, pitchers are essentially useless as hitters, making them hitting counterproductive for fan interest. The other side of the coin is a historical, purist POV, which to many baseball fans is highly important. There’s validity to both sides.
@NoNameForThisGuy
@NoNameForThisGuy 2 жыл бұрын
It's not just a historical thing. I think the pitchers would be able to hit if they werent coddled as soon as they made it past the high school level. NCAA/minor leages have DH, so they stop practicing as soon as the competition gets tough. Then the next time they look at a pitch its at the MLB level. Of course they can't hit it. What I really hate about it though is professional DHs. I just don't want to root for a guy whose only job is to waddle over to the plate and hope he hits it over the fence. They say pitching is boring, but I find the 3-true-outcome baseball way more boring.
