Hello Becky i really appreciate the video, it was very helpful. But my Epub has error while checking, it says{/OEBPS/toc.xhtml (line 52, col 49)}, and many more same error with different lines number. I went through many forum and did what they said, but nothing seems to work. I event remove toc and its style from the book, still the same error. And this happens when i export book as whole, event withiut toc. When exported individual chapters there is no error. If you know, could you please help out. Thank you.

UGH. I KNOW EXACTLY YOUR ISSUE. I have this in my video to-do list. It's from a new InDesign eBook export setting. Make sure you UNCHECK the little box that says "Page Navigation." This may not remove ALL the issues, but will fix a majority (if not all) of them. It tries to create a link on every single page and creates a big mess.
@beckysgraphicdesign

@beckysgraphicdesign If that doesn't fix all the problems, you can use Sigil and ePub Checker to find exactly WHICH hyperlink is not working and correct the link path to a valid one.

Why did your image get anchored automatically but mine didn't? I don't see the anchor image? When I hit return on the text above my image, mine doesn't move, yours does.

Try playing with the Anchored Object settings. You probably need to switch it to "Above Line" instead of "Inline."

Wow, Kayla, it worked! I couldn't get rid of the image square frame box surrounding a circular frontmatter picture when exporting to reflowable epub. I've been working on this for 2 days off and on with many attempts including taking CSS tutorials. I applied your tip, exported, and like magic, the box disappeared leaving the circular image! Thank you very much for your tip!

Here's the revised version with your addition included: Thanks for this tutorial. I have a question for you. I need to layout a long book with about 10 chapters, each in a separate Word file. Every chapter has hundreds of endnotes, all linked to their references. However, the author decided to restart the endnotes from 1 for each chapter, so there is no numerical continuity of references between chapters. When I placed Chapter 1 into InDesign, everything was fine. But when I placed Chapter 2, that's when the problems started. InDesign didn't restart the endnotes from 1; instead, it continued numbering from where Chapter 1 left off. For example, Chapter 1 has 252 references, and Chapter 2 has 350. InDesign numbered Chapter 2's endnotes starting from 253, and all the references from chapter 2 above that number simply disappeared. How can I fix this? Or should I ask the author to combine all the chapters and endnotes into a single Word document?
@beckysgraphicdesign
@beckysgraphicdesign 10 күн бұрын
There are a couple different ways to handle this. 1., you could make your Endnotes "static," or no longer "live" in each separate InDesign document before combining them via a Book. 2., tell your Endnotes to "Restart Every Story" instead of remaining "Continuous."
@claudio_sergiacomo
@claudio_sergiacomo 10 күн бұрын
@@beckysgraphicdesign Thanks so much. Today at 3am after several adicitional research and videos I have found that "Restart Every Story" option is the one to go with, but first, you need to ensure that you break the continuity of the text flow at the beginning of each chapter. This allows InDesign to restart the sequence from 1 and maintain the link to the respective endnote and chapter, even though every chapter's endnote will also start at 1. To break the text continuity, I had to use a built-in InDesign script called "BrakeTextThread," which works perfectly on my InDesign 2021 version. I initially tried an older script called "SplitStory," but it doesn't work on my version. Thanks a lot for your time to reply and suggestions and I hope this post will help others with the same issue I had.

Fantastic Video.. I managed to figure out my mistakes!!! Would have been great if you showed how you kept space between the lines? At the moment mine are all squished together. 😁 And THANK YOU for showing me about finding and replacing character styles! I wish this worked for font replacements as well. I can find the incorrect font but I can't replace it with the paragraph style that I want.. hope they'll include it in 2037! Edit: So I figured out how to add some styling to my lines after I create my ToC. But my issue is now this.. If I manually add a space between my sections because adding indents is not an option.. when I update my ToC all my manual edits disappear. Is there no way to retain my manual styling? Note I'm not doing any manual styling to the page numbers or its content.. just the space between sections.
@beckysgraphicdesign
@beckysgraphicdesign 21 күн бұрын
Correct-manual styling will be overwritten each time you update. Are you trying to add leading or "Space After" between your entries? This can be done in the Paragraph Styles. You can also use "Left Indent" if you need to do an indent.
@denhamk
@denhamk 21 күн бұрын
@@beckysgraphicdesign yikes… Then I better leave that till the very end. So.. I have added space after my level-1 headings and they look ok .. but there is no way to add space after to just one part of the level -1 paragraph styles unless I create another paragraph style targeting just that particular heading and the add space before to that style so that it will push the entire section to the next page. ..
@beckysgraphicdesign
@beckysgraphicdesign 15 күн бұрын
Oh, I see what you're saying-it's a matter of assigning styles to the BOOK contents rather than an issue styling the TOC. Yeah, it takes a while to build a good styling system that also works seamlessly with an auto-generated TOC.

I'm a bit confused. What is the advantage of these scripts over common PDF export X-1a or X-4 with color conversion and custom downsampling of the included images?
@beckysgraphicdesign
@beckysgraphicdesign Ай бұрын
Some printers get very snarky about your editable file and will still tag you with an error if they detect that your image was compressed during PDF export. They want the ACTUAL linked image to have a CMYK color mode and true 300 PPI. I've tried to get around it with PDF export settings, which was my first thought, too, but to no avail. They wanted me to fix the file itself.

Great videos! Is there a reason why unembeded images are preferable in an indesign file? Is it just to reduce file size when sending to a printer? I have found that I get lower resolution print output on 300 ppi images when unembedded, but I'm wondering if that has been a different problem.
@beckysgraphicdesign
@beckysgraphicdesign Ай бұрын
Yes, that is the main reason: smaller .indd file size. It's also easier to make changes to the image, such as if I needed to run a batch on the files in Photoshop, or run certain scripts on the images.

Hi, How can I prevent the name of a chapter when it is very long from touching the page number?
@beckysgraphicdesign
@beckysgraphicdesign Ай бұрын
Unfortunately, there isn't really a good way to avoid this problem when using a text variable, because InDesign sees it as one long character, not a set of words, BUT, if you will put a manual line break in your chapter title (using Shift+Enter), the text variable will become only the first half of that chapter title, since there's now a line break in it.
@beckysgraphicdesign
@beckysgraphicdesign Ай бұрын
Oh, unless you're talking about a right-hand text wrap on your TOC. In that case, apply a last-line right-hand indent to your paragraph style-that will take care of it and wrap that line away from the page number.
