Thanks for the trip down memory lane! You didn't mention that the early M3s had a lower wishbone rear suspension with Rotax couplings in the driveshafts, like the Mk2 and different to the Spitfire, Mk1s and later Mk3s. It made the handling superb...unlike the others! In effect, the rear suspension was double wishbone, like the Herald set up on the front. I did 60,000 miles in mine and heaps of UJs in the driveline...then upgraded to a Dolly Sprint, with which I ended up on first-name terms with every nut and bolt after about 18 months..but it was worth it! Oh that they'd put that engine in a GT6 body.. One track day, I did a 1min 6-second lap of the Brands Hatch short circuit when the Formula Ford lap record was about 60 seconds. You're dead right about electronic ignition and electric fan, even back in the early 1980s...I built my own from a thermistor and a relay and used two Lucas heater fans side by side. The GT6 sure was a much better car than the MGB GT....and still is, of course. 100% agree they're an unsung classic...

As the SAAB engine is the left bank of the Stag V8 certain parts are compatible, SAAB shims came in finer sizes and if I remember correctly you can use the chain guides and tensioner. I used to put a half penny in the oil pump bypass valve spring and this gives another 5 psi and helps the tensioner at low RPM. As mentioned watch the tensioner does not over set. Engine must be cold.

Yep we had oil pressure gauge pipes mainly chaffing on the bulkhead and alike , mk 1 s from January 1972 onwards had lots of MK2 parts before the first MK2. For 73 , thanks for sharing
@YorkshireClassicCarsltd28 күн бұрын
I think, the exhaust manifold has warmed up the nylon and the oil pressure pushed it off the barb. It's also a new oil pump and they tend to set the relief valve too high in my opinion, this one makes over 80psi at idle cold, although with the damaged pipe it may have saved the cranks life!

It’s a good tip for cutting bolts or studs down, used it for years. But kinda surprised they needed cutting down, original studs were I think sized for steel wheels so I would have thought the extra stud length would be offset by the thicker MiniLites. But then I am not there to measure it and you are!
@TheLostWrenchGarageАй бұрын
Good info!! I am planning on doing this to my Spitfire soon! As for the screws in the brake drum they are there to keep the drum on while on the assembly line so the don't drop off until it get's the station that installs the wheels and tires. Other that that they don't even need to be replaced sense the wheel holds the drum on.

I think your video may have answered a question I had while checking over my new to me GT6. I noticed this section had no drainage and wondered if it had been missed out when it was restored years ago. It seems it's correct without a drain ?
@marktshark7158Ай бұрын
Great job Doug 😎
@bobfrankish8883Ай бұрын
It's a good job, I would have done it the same way. The purists would want to butt weld, but it isn't as strong as the lap weld, and I don't care how careful a grinder you are, the metal always gets thinned when grinding butt welds flush. Best result would be to inject some rust preventative onto the rear of the seam if possible, I swear by the Dinitrol products, but anything is better than nothing. For me, there is nothing wrong with tapping the seam down a bit before filler application, an extra 1mm of filler is negligible and it makes a completely invisible repair.
@JuntasificationАй бұрын
I made both rear fenders like this and now I kinda regret it. I'm more annoyed that I now have bash the weld in and use more filler. I was thinking about dinitrol in the back seam before sealer also.

@@YorkshireClassicCarsltdYes they are a nice car to learn a craft; What I would say is a the cheapest route to owning a classic car would probably to pay in the upper asking price range for one; So many people are seduced by a cheap deal and totally under estimate the time and expense of actually bringing the vehicle up to scratch.. I can guarantee the cheapest option is to pay for a finished car ( by someone else).. I was the right age for doing what I did back in the 1980’s but I took the lesson forward to owning a herald £500 bought and sold two years later ( no expense)to when I bought only my third classic at 55yo and payed top money for a genuine two owner 29000 mile Stag.. I still had to spend £5000 and put in around 80 hours ( the second hand soft top bought in the 1980’s) on really stupid things ( bad workmanship mainly) but the car is probably in the top 10 by originality in existence.
