Note, you may hear crackling sounds in some of the patches. This is coming from my Tempest itself. I don't know if this is normal or my tempest needs repair. I'll check with Sequential to see if they still repair these.

Voice allocation is an issue. The blend of samples and synths eats time. It's OK to reproduce already produced material for live or a variation but I do not find it all too inspiring. Less does more. BTW One of the few machines with an actual footswitch that works!

How is it 8 track but 10 channels? What do the last two channels do if they aren't tracks?
@Retrothusiast10 күн бұрын
Hi Rob. Thanks for watching. The channels are all assignable to tracks of your choice via the LCD matrix. I usually just pick a one of the built in scenes and don't go too deep, but it's my understanding that you can get pretty creative on how to assign channels to tracks to best fit your needs.

THE most important feature that made me wanna get one of these was the fact that this was the only Tascam 8 track machine, recording to cassettes, that was able to record all 8 tracks at the same time. All the other 8 track portastudios, even though they offered 8 tracks, only recorded 4 channels at the same time at maximum. And i needed at least 6 channels at the same time. So i found an actually affordable and working 688 and when it arrived i was simply blown away by how massive and heavy it is. And oh god is the routing matrix complicated. It's definitely the LEAST intuitive Cassette Multitack Studio you can get. So the 8 tracks at once recording feature really comes with a huge caveat :P
@Retrothusiast15 күн бұрын
The routing matrix is certainly hard to wrap your head around at first. The 688 incredibly complex, but extremely versatile. And yes, it's an absolute beast! Hopefully yours arrived damage free. Mine did not.

688 ownership is directly correlated with Star Wars figurine collections and inversely with copulation frequency.

Loved my 644 so much i bought a spare. Aside from the mt track, the unit is very quiet and the eq is very musical. The routing matrix is awesome. You have loads of inputs and even have separate outs, perfect combination with a modern daw!

I've been a Tascam fan since the first units and have owned several ever since (I've got the Model 12 now). Just curious how it lays down the tracks on the tapes? Does it have something like 6, 8 or 10 tracks on the recording head? I had an Alesis ADAT for a while, but the VCR tape drive kept failing. But I never had a problem with cassette drives on the Tascams!
@muttomatic17 күн бұрын
8 track head.
@Retrothusiast15 күн бұрын
It does have an 8 track head, which is very impressive, especially considering how well it still sounds with such tiny stripes on the tape.

So is the Xm and X basically a higher end combination of several ACB based roland emulations?
@Retrothusiast24 күн бұрын
It's my understanding the ACB technology is different from the ZEN-Core tech, which both the X and Xm utilize.
@PayneSculptures24 күн бұрын
@@Retrothusiast - Ah I didn't realize they were zen-core. That's a bummer. I don't understand why Roland doesn't put in the extra time/effort into 6 or 8 channel ACB based clones. The extra realism is very much appreciated while Zencore (I feel) sounds like a reasonable rather than exact approximation.

I collect Portastudios. My first recording format from the 80s! I own a 244, 246, PortaOne, PortaTwo, 414, 424 mkIII, and a 488. Used to own a 388, regret selling that one, but tape is expensive. I’d rather hoard my cassettes. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for watching. I’ve collected several myself. Thinking about highlighting some others in upcoming videos.

Also worth calibrating the Pitch and Mod wheels before sending in for repair, expecially if its just out of tune relative to your other synths
@wampusmmАй бұрын
This was exactly the progression, yes! I bought a 246 in 1986, made my first album on it, and then replaced it with the 388 in 1988 (and made five albums on that). You're so right that the two share the same elegantly designed, feature-rich DNA. I loved them more than I've loved any deck or DAW since (not that I don't appreciate the technical advances). These hold a special place in my heart... Thank you.
