Any idea how this 10 gallon false bottom performs with trub/cold break material??
@NorCalBrewing
@NorCalBrewing Жыл бұрын
Its amazing for hop material ETC. I personally like to drop 1/2 oz or so of whole hops in there and it will blow your mind how much material it will stop. Even without the whole hops it stop most all the pellet hops. I suggest a short recirc in the kettle to get the material from under the FB to the top of the FB as the material will work hard to get under there during a boil. Hope that helps. Cheers Jay

I've got the Catalyst fermenter from Craft a Brew and they have a built-in canning jar attachment at the bottom for exactly this reason. I think it's a great, flexible and cheap design for a great many things. If I had a triclamp conical, I'd absolutely get one of these and convert it. Nicely done! One question: Any idea what PSI rating a typical canning jar can hold?
@NorCalBrewing
@NorCalBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
With a standard band, which is the weakest link in the system, some about 5 some 10, there is really no way to know. We do sell a stainless band that will hold quite a bit more than the stock band. Ours were developed with an added thread to catch that second rib on the jar and being stainless they wont rust.

@NorCalBrewing

Explain please if you will? Not sure as I follow you. my demonstration is using QT jars but you can double the volume by using 1/2 gallon jars. I personally use the 1/2 gallon, ferment 12 gallons and haven't ever needed to add gas but I have the ability if need be. Cheers Jay

Will this work if you have an electric element in the kettle?
@NorCalBrewing
@NorCalBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. It is not as efficient as in a kettle with absolutely nothing in there but yes you can get a whirlpool going and keep it going with an element in the kettle. The "CONE" will form along side the element and it won't be as "PERFECT" as an empty kettle as the element disrupts that perfect flow. Cheers Jay

what? how is this NOT pushing oxygen into the beer?
@NorCalBrewing
@NorCalBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
Where would the Oxygen come from Dan. IF done properly the amount of O2 in the system would quickly be displaced with Co2.
@deeztones
@deeztones 2 жыл бұрын
@@NorCalBrewing the oxygen would come from the hop container and is going to travel through the beer along with the hops. I imagine some oxygen will dissolve into the beer along the way. Why would oxidation ever be much of a concern with dry hopping otherwise if it's not going to dissolve into beer on contact? You could always back fill with co2 to get a blanket under the residual oxygen but I don't think that's going to prevent oxidation if the beer has already been exposed with oxygen traveling through it.

@NorCalBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
@@deeztones Ahh yes the dreaded "oxygen trapped in the HOPS" I couldn't agree more! When going for dryer styles like saisons is the iodine test sufficient? Couldn't there be full starch conversion to sugar, but still be remaining longer chained sugars that still need to be broken down into more fermentable sugars?
@NorCalBrewing

All the test is going to show you is that there is or is not starch. Has nothing to do with the make up of and or what type of sugar you are dealing with. Starch and only starch.

Wondering how your adding CO2 down the racking cane and liquid is coming out at the same time am I missing something?
@NorCalBrewing
@NorCalBrewing 3 жыл бұрын
Ahh yes the magic I designed into the system. The racking cane is 1/2" the opening it goes through in the cross is 7/8" the cane passes through the gas chamber going into the tank. The compression fitting and O'ring stop the gas from going anywhere else but INTO the tank. You'll see if you get one. It's kind of a cool design... If I do say so myself :) Thanks for the comment.. Cheers Jay

@@NorCalBrewing Super clever. You've got some really neat, grass-roots engineering things. One recommendation, I would be to use a closed loop design to save on CO2. Once it gets going you can feed the displaced gas from the keg back into the fermenter. I use just enough gravity (2 or 3 feet) to get mine going and then the rest is done entirely with closed-loop CO2 pressure leaving the keg and pushing down the liquid in the fermenter that exits out.

Over the normal CO2 Harvesting system? Or at all? Harvesting and using your harvested CO2 is the safest way to cold crash your vessel and not pull "AIR" back into that vessel. When the vessel gets cold it is going to create a vacuum and pull from the spot of least restriction. In this case its the harvested CO2 we captured during fermentation. Good question David! Hello, very cool concept on harvesting CO2, but couldn't the same process be performed by attaching CO2 to the Ultimate Cross kit on a Sanke or Spidel Fermenter prior to cold crashing, or even using a spunding valve to pressurize prior to crashing. Maybe this is just other option...

Looks like a good idea ... but Im not sure there would be enough CO2 for cold crashing, I have a bag system at the moment and have needed to put two in parallel to have enough, they are much larger than those jars. Another issue would be that the first jar is half full of normal air (not CO2) at the start, the CO2 is heavier than the air so only the replaced water would retain the co2 (as the tube is sucking from the bottom of the jar). Would it not work better if only the second jar had water in and the first jar did not have a hose to the bottom then all the air would be pushed out of the first jar during fermentation (from the top) and only co2 would be brought back into the fermenter during a cold crash
@jaywebster6265
@jaywebster6265 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Depending on the batch size is how big of jars we need to facilitate transfer. You are absolutely correct. We fill the first jar completely with water and let the CO2 push that over then saturate the water with the CO2 as it passes through the water.

You can get 64Oz mason wide mouth mason jars that this would work with. And if you have a really big fermenter, you could just chain the jars in sequence and expand it infinitely, theoretically.
