It was redundant really, but the ending was pure BS too. It just made no sense to look around in the grass for keys and it was just another "where the hell do I go" game. It had potential, I wanted to love it, but it had no bosses and the poorest way of finding items. No one wants to cut grass to find keys at all, especially when they get lost and there is no map!

is this randomised? how on earth is this even possible, given the hardware it's an extremely impressive port
@VIPERsRetrogamevideos13 күн бұрын
Yes, the levels are randomly generated here too. A few features had to be cut from the original due to the lack of memory, such as looking down when crouching or throwing the rope downwards. Modern game development on PC for the C64 has already made many things possible. There are even more impressive games for this 1982 computer, but those only run from cartridge and constantly stream data while playing.

@VIPERsRetrogamevideos16 күн бұрын
Thanks for the advice, but unfortunately the save states don't work with BMC128 (probably not in VICE either, the basis for the BMC emulator I use). Otherwise I would definitely have a few longplays of the C128 machine on my channel. Still, it's great that you're releasing the game for the C128 as well. Great work!
@fleischgemuese-vn7xs16 күн бұрын
@@VIPERsRetrogamevideos It's not a real C128 version, it is still C64 but utilizing the faster CPU.
@VIPERsRetrogamevideos15 күн бұрын
@@fleischgemuese-vn7xs I know that you have to play the game in C64 mode on the C128. But as I said, there is no way for me to use save states for the video, as I would have to start the C128 emulator in C64 mode here too. And that's why I would have made a longplay of the normal C64 version anyway, even if the 2Mhz version was already available.

I made it to Trickium but gave up there. Your version obviously has collisions turned off.
@VIPERsRetrogamevideos22 күн бұрын
For my longplays I never use cheats in the trainer menus, so collision detection should have been enabled here as well. However, I usually use save states and reassemble the video sections in the video editing program. Reaching the Trickium level is very impressive! The Plus version has a bad reputation due to its excessively high difficulty level.
@lluviarodriguezdemedina682222 күн бұрын
@@VIPERsRetrogamevideosin Trickium which proved to be Nemesis ages ago it looks to me that you are touching the walls several times. Maybe this emulated version is a little bit more forgiving? The infamous death trap at the end obviously is intended for the player to fly a very complicated maneuver but you just flew through. Tried that one hundreds of times but always crashed. Anyways, was fun watching you vid.👍

As a programming novice, I have a technical question. Is the graphics purely in ECM mode? All the games I've played with this graphic style have typically been single-screen games like 'Robot Jet Action.' 'Barnsley Badger' scrolls vertically at times, but Nixy also scrolls horizontally. Is this horizontal scrolling in high-res mode fundamentally not a problem, or do you need some tricks for that?
@rwxdesignsАй бұрын
@@VIPERsRetrogamevideos Nixy is just Hires character mode. Robot Jet Action is EBCM. Scrolling in either is no different to scrolling in multicolour mode. The scroll registers in $d011 and $d016 can be scrolled a single pixel at a time in each direction. Most programmers may decide to use a technique called double-buffering, which is having two copies of screen and drawing the data into one screen whilst the other is being smooth scrolled and then switched when they hardscroll. The trick is to have a fast colour scroll routine, as that can't be double-buffered and Nixy will definitely use one, probably with unrolled loops for speed.
@VIPERsRetrogamevideosАй бұрын
@@rwxdesigns This hi-res character mode creates an exceptional graphic style. I don't know many games that use this mode. Am I correct in assuming that EBCM is used in Spelunky 64 (or is it multicolour)? And thanks for the explanation of the technique behind scrolling. I wish I could program in machine code/assembler, but the time required to learn it all from scratch exceeds my capabilities.
@rwxdesignsАй бұрын
@@VIPERsRetrogamevideos Spelunky64 is just like Nixy in terms of its background graphics - Hires characters. Quite a few games in recent years have used it, but used it in such a way to not make it look like a Spectrum game. If learning 6510 is not something you think you'll be able to pick up quickly, then there's always TRSE, which is based on Pascal - a higher level language. Robot Jet Action and Night Knight are two games written in TRSE. That could be a starting point for you.
@VIPERsRetrogamevideosАй бұрын
@@rwxdesigns Thanks for the tip, Robert. Learning 6510 is unrealistic for me, and I don’t really want to write Basic programs. As a kid, I always wanted to learn programming and started writing my own Basic programs, but unfortunately, my C64 was taken away by my parents back then (due to supposedly declining school performance) before I could dive deeper into the subject. I'll take a look at TRSE; maybe one day I'll start my own project. I have plenty of ideas for new games.
