What I love about Chiyari is that her character feels very well designed: It's easy to hate playing against her, but that's something she probably relishes in, it also fits her into the underground cast of characters who were also designed to have terrifying bullets. Her being a hikikomori also feels like a fitting characteristic

Soooo... Ran the fox was living in the Animal Realm, but then dipped and met Yukari. But I think that we can learn a little more about shikigamis with the exchange with Yuuma. Zun probably forgot that Ran name was chosen by Yukari, but I have thought of an explanation that it's not a bad: What if "Ran" was a nickname? What is only some close people such as Yuuma knew her as Ran? It seems that she was a really important character in the Animal Realm, maybe a leader before Yuuma? If that is true, then Yukari not only choose to keep her nickname because it was fitting, but also because she is a massive troll! A nickname is supposed to be something special and unique. However, thanks to Yukari, EVERYONE calls her Ran! So they took that from Yuuma! Now, the other interesting thing is how Shikigami come to be. We know that they are kind of an AI that is implanted into a living being, but wouldn't be a waste to loose like thousend of years of knowledge? (also, why would anyone accept to give up their body like that?) And we know that shikigami have distinct personalities that seem to be similar to their hosts. So here is what I think: There are 2 differente beings, one artificial and one living, and they fuse together to create a new being with both of their characteristics (similar to the ending of Ghost in the Shell). Therefore, Ran Yakumo has the memories of "Ran" the fox and the skills of the shikigami program, and it's not just a possesion. But it's just a theory in order to make some sense it this. But hey! Isn't what Touhou is all about? Giving our own interpretation of the characters with the little information that is given at the time?

Whether people are debating whether Toby was or wasn't responsible for Ran's appearance. Let's appreciate the fact she is playable and also 1 of the 4 protagonists. I don't want to cause another war in the replies. Ran is one of my all-time favourite characters.

Cannot believe Ran got promoted to playable and a major protagonist. Moreso, her new backstory's quite something. Probably my favorite route of TH19 when before now she was just a character I thought was neat. Thanks, Zun/Toby

I really appreciate the fact that ZUN not only took a boatload of underrated but fan favourite characters of previous games, and even took the time to give them sick remixes or new themes all together.
