At least he is honest, when he says that he believes in Christian faith because it is what he was raised with and is the dominant belief system where he lives. If he was born in India, he would be a Hindu, which is proof that religion is based on nothing more than cultural and social reinforcement. There is nothing divine about it, anymore than there is anything divine about Judaism, Islam, or any of the other world religions.

When it comes to children and answers, you tell stories. There’s nothing wrong with telling your children stories. Know mythology. They hang onto mythologies, fairy stories. When your kid asks, “Where did God come from, you can honestly say, “I don’t know, but there are a lot of stories about that. Wanna hear one?” Christianity and Judaism have a book that has lots of great stories. It’s okay to tell them stories. Like Jonah-a great story about how to deal with people you don’t like. Or you can tell stories about Lugh-the God of Everything in Irish lore. Just tell kids stories. Just tell adults stories. Stories are terrific. We don’t have to KNOW, one of the nicest things you can do for your kids is teach them how to wonder.

If Jesus is what God looks like, the EXACT representation, I don't think He commanded this at all. Now, they probably THOUGHT God commanded it!! The Bible shows us people's misunderstandings about who God is all over the place!! This is why in one place we see passages like this and in others we see the idea of swords being beaten into plowshares. All of this still goes on today, even after the nonviolent teachings of Jesus! People always think that God is telling them to go kill some people in the name of their "rightness" versus those other people's "wrongness", and, of course, God is ALWAYS on their side when doing it!! But if you stop the noise of worldly conditioning (things like tribalism), you can hear it clear as day.... "Love your neighbor. Love your enemies. Do not hit them if they hit you. Go with them two miles if they ask you to go one." The difference, I think, comes between alien ears and worldly ears. Worldly ears love violence. The kingdom of the world operates from a place of violence. As Toby Keith sang, "Oh, and justice will be served and the battle will rage, This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage, And you'll be sorry that you messed with The U.S. of A. Cause we'll put a boot in your ass, It's the American way." Indeed it is the American way, the worldly way, but it isn't the Kingdom of God Jesus way.

God’s word created life, and he has the right to take it, yes even babies. Babies are just like fully grown humans to him, we only are offended more because we are programmed to take care of them. To God a baby dying is the same as an adult. The entire nation that was wiped out was extremely sinful, and if allowed to continue God could see those babies would grow up and do the exact same sins. Therefore the entire nation was guilty, even the children

I think what's interesting is that people even make the argument that God is less violent in the NT compared to the OT. Have they not read Revelation? It is the literal destruction of all things other than those who are saved. The Earth and Universe itself

And these 'universalist' idiots think their horrible god is going to 'restore all things' and 'make everything better...eventually'.

I do think it matters quite a bit how we handle the genre of literature in question. For instance, a host of prominent scholars would contend that Revelation is mostly backward looking - that is, it is about events in the past and is more metaphorical. I think there are very fair things to say about NT and OT divine characterizing.
@Yahda77 ай бұрын
@OpentoTruth I understand some people assume that to refer to events in the past, but they would very silly to. There are countless verses that are explicit regarding the destruction of the world. Vivid imagery, bottomless abyss, fire from the heavens, and so much more

The is very little difference between the trinity and oneness. The primary difference is how someone defines the word 'person'. Most people who advocate for the trinity accept the definition of 'person' that allows for a 1:3 relationship between personhood and souls. Most people who reject the trinity do so because the very essence of their definition of 'person' is that there can ONLY be a 1:1 relationship between soul and person. It is impossible to convince someone who defines 'person' as a 1:1 relationship of that the term 'triune God' is not a prima facie contradiction. Both trinitarians and oneness agree that God is Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Most oneness do not give special treatment to God the Father/Son/Holy Ghost over other relationships that God has with us like God the Healer, or God the Provider, or God of Peace, etc. Many trinitarians seem to elevate Father/Son/Holy Ghost above the rest of the relationships that God has with us. Most apologetics who debate the trinity waste a lot of time arguing issues that are not relevant to the actual disagreement. Most trinitarians and oneness agree on almost everything and use the same scriptures to make their points. The only three disagreements are 1) the definition of the word 'person'...which isn't even a biblical debate; 2) should Father/Son/Holy Ghost be treated different than other relationships; and 3) should baptism be in the name of the Father/Son/Holy Ghost (Jesus) or the titles of Father/Son/Holy Ghost.
@OpentoTruth9 ай бұрын
I agree with you that there is much talking past one another on these topics. I'd maybe push back on the idea that characterizing or defining 'person' isn't a biblical debate - that is, there may be interesting philosophical ideas/claims about personhood in the text.
@andrewgoss64869 ай бұрын
@OpentoTruth people who define a person as a 1:1 relationship between body and soul can not be pushed into changing their definition of 'person' unless you give them a different word for 'person' that reflects a 1:1 relationship between a body and soul. If a person can be more than one person, then the word person doesn't mean anything. This is why many Oneness describe God as having distinct personalities because they allow for a person to have a 1:many relationship with personalities.

Christians have long missed the point of the gospels. The hero is not Jesus, it's Pilate, who took a sensible decision to preserve the stability of Judaea and the authority of the Roman state in the face of a delusional cult leader who was going around telling everyone that the world was about to end.

2Pe 1:16-21 We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory saying "This is my Son whom I love with him I am well pleased". We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain. And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it as to a light shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation for prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

I don't think that Jesus would think that casting stones is ever appropriate. He really lived his teaching on non judgement. It is very difficult for our cultural ego in this modern society to not cast that stone. Maybe each time we feel compelled to cast the stone that we are fully aware of that compulsion?

Hebrews 6:4-6. It has long been used (or strongly implied) by my ex-church that this means anyone who once believed the truth they taught will be lost if they walk away from it. (It's also easy to see how any number of churches or denominations might use this text to spiritually imprison people.) I do NOT believe this, but this passage has made a tough road a lot more challenging, because every question can feel like God-alienating heresy. The overall stream of scripture and a growing understanding of how big and embracing God really IS have helped me not read this text in isolation, but I would still love to hear some good discussion on that passage.
@OpentoTruth Жыл бұрын
Hi Sharon, there's a ton we could say about this passage. What stood out to me is when you said, "every question can feel like God-alienating heresy." First, the feels-like that you are voicing is the result of a system of ideas created by people, not by God. God is not angry with you because of your questions. Second, ironically, the same sentiment you mentioned might be shared by folks who grew up with an entirely differently reaction to the passage, that is, those who think "once saved always saved" - might also be struggling with severe anxiety on this stuff. In their case, it's more, "Was I ever actually saved?" and the other is "Am I still saved?" Both are equally toxic and miss the point of the gospel.
