The aesir gods apart from thor, baldur or maybe odin are not that strong compared to the gods of olympus. Unlike them, the aesir are not masters of combat and warfare. Heimdall is the biggest example of the aesir being completely inexperienced when it comes to combat. He uses his mind reading as a crutch in combat. Year too late on this theory but I feel like if Santa Monica were going to go down the path of Christianity for god of war, it's not going to be Jesus saving Kratos and mankind. I mean there are still a lot of options to consider for what mythologies could be used to further expand or effect the journey of Kratos or anyone associated with the main story like Atreus. Such as: Celtic, Egyptian, Afrikaan, Chinese, Japanese, Zoroastrianism, Hindu, Aztec, Inca, Native American, and many more. If they are gonna go the Christian route I would recommend they do it Shin Megami Tensei style first, since it uses plenty of gnostic and catholic imagery and characters such as Metatron, the reincarnated angel who was originally Enoch from the Book of Enoch, even Lucifer himself.

I think the writers and director screwed this game up. From playing as Atreaus beating enemies with a bow, to no barehand combat, to goofy armor, to too much weird drama and not getting Thors Hammer as weapon option.....I was just let down. This confusing death scene is one of the many issues. I think Corey would have done better

It's interesting that considering how much happens in Ragnarök, this feels like the most impactful scene. He feels like he finally had the conclusion to his character arc. This older Kratos went from being and old, but wizened soldier regretful of who he was and what he did, and finally accepting what happened, and accepting himself. It isn't the flashy stuff that the fans love (although it helps a story), but what fans really love is just good character writing and somber but impactful moments like this.

This should've been a Boss Fight. Where he pulls old weapons against you, like the Nemean Clestus from Hercules, etc. And then WHEN you beat him, this monologue happens. Wasted opportunity.
