I LOVE how everything random still hits consistently in the melodic space. It is very difficult for me to be able to use Marbles(Pachinko), without having a few "farts" being generated. If I am understanding your patch notes, you are quantizing through O_c, correct? (I do this also, because the quantization features of Marbles are still a bit of a wrangle for me - I'd love to be able to NOT rely on outside quantization but I am not there yet.) BTW - the patch notes are AWESOME. Something I should start doing also, but you know...laziness. 🤪 The best thing about patch notes is that it makes me realize just how little I know about this stuff - its a great help to me. Brilliant patch, Lauren, as usual. You have a knack for coaxing some beautiful and original melody out of your rig. Have a beautiful Sunday! - JC

Thank you Jim!! Always grateful for your ear and comments! 🥰 So I use o_C in quantermain but I’m using it as a quick octave shifter for the disting. It’s also quantizing but mainly used for octave shifting. I’ll keep up the patch notes! So happy that’s helpful. I know I had to really force myself to sit and do it but I promised myself I would. It’s definitely worth it.
@Lk747CC
@Lk747CC 23 күн бұрын
Also just for the record, I did have some major farts out of the pachinko. I threw this through ableton and took em out.. I had to come clean 😂 that thing is finicky with the quant, I usually keep the steps between 3-4oclock which seems to work best. There’s also a way to put your own scales into it. I think Lightbath has a video on that. The Disting is also a bit finicky with the quantizing, which is what was patched into the Pachinko. It could be me, not sure yet. I am changing a bunch of parameters in the Disting. It has an internal quantization so I feel like it kind of competes when I quantize it with other stuff…. Not sure what the issue is yet. It’s all part of the learning curve. So much to figure out. I’m never bored that’s for sure.
@scienceroommusic

Thank you so much for your kind words. I so wish I could reveal the details. I unfortunately did not take any patch notes. But! That will never happen again. @justrichardcharles just did a post about always taking notes and making it apart of your practice. I was watching it kicking myself for unpatching before writing patch notes. Thanks for the vote for longer peaceful pieces like this! I will definitely be doing that…. And taking notes from now on. In the description though all the modules I used are listed. I can say that I am experimenting with the linear sequences of the black sequencer and clocking the pachinko with the black sequencer. That was my focus in this patch. To integrate linear and generative sequencing.

I heard Aphex Twin say something to the effect of, “I make music I like. I make music that moves me emotionally.” We share our heart and soul through sound. I feel the same way. The music I’m sharing moves me emotionally, it’s from the heart. I don’t share it unless I love it. A willingness to be vulnerable and courageous. It’s a love offering. Last night I couldn’t sleep and thought to turn on this meditation. At some point in the second time through I gently fell back asleep. It’s a reminder that not only is this an offering of love for others but also it’s an offering for myself. Where the music comes from is a place I only fully tap into when I’m playing. When I feel disconnected and anxious I can always get back to this relaxed state of love through the music.

Thank you so much! That means a lot to me 🥰 thank you for saying that. I know right?! Modular is magic. It’s connected on so many levels. One way being our bodies are complex electrical systems. We generate and utilize electrical signals within our bodies to function. Our bodies can completely relate to this. Im a thinker so sometimes I’m just like all head no body. This grounds me. I connect physically, emotionally, mentally when I’m playing. My whole system is involved and activated. it’s the feelings in my body that really navigate the whole thing. My brain isn’t getting in the way because it’s obsessed with the technical side of it all. Which is really important. Happy as a clam, occupied and learning. Modular just grounds and connects every part of me. What the hell, I wish I found this sooner!! The ultimate happening, as much as I’m using time for structure I’m completely free of the constraints of time. Its like time, as we know it, doesn’t exist… It’s amazing! It’s become an extra limb. I’m just all swirled up in this music. What a dream. I absolutely love it.

I’m so happy to hear this. Thank you so much for sharing. I can relate, it was so overwhelming for me at first. At times it still is and then I remind myself to simplify. That works every time. Learning modular is slow and steady. Every time I find myself trying to speed up the process I always end up having to take a step back. It’s a good reminder of enjoy it, patience, presence, practice, relax into it go with the flow and cool things happen. Eventually it starts to make sense. You always know enough to try things so definitely don’t wait to get started until you know more. Now is the time. Remember you’re basically learning a new language, then each word or concept you learn there are many layers of understanding within it. That understanding just comes with time. Even what seems like basic stuff can feel really complicated. That always frustrated me until I just gave into, I don’t get it yet but I will. The beauty of this is there’s no rush, it’s experimental, adventurous, nothing is wrong, it’s always exploration and discovery, anything can be music if it feels right, it opens you up, it’s really truly a blast. There’s always something to discover that you’ve never heard before. Have fun! Beginners mind. You will get it for sure. Thanks so much for being here! Thanks again for sharing, much appreciated 😊

@@Lk747CC I did... finally! (on 17 August) I've only just begun to make time to wrap my brain around it as I also recently completed a large trade of eurorack modules to upgrade my modular from "experimenting" to my modular "instrument". I have roughly 220HP of modules and -zero- overlap of modules with you... that I can determine. & I find that intriguing. anyway, the VL2 - I really wish the font was a bit larger (my eyes are also getting old). it's surprisingly heavy and built sturdy. the oscillators sound fantastic and the sequencer is a weird, slightly confusing, deep beast... which is fine. I need whackjob sequencers in my life, they fuel my processes. @@Lk747CC I've been learning the different "apps" in it slowly, trying to pick up as much as I can about each one before moving on. So far, I've found Quantermain a favorite for sure. I have used it a couple of times to quantize the output of Marbles, which I know is redundant, but its faster and easier to dial in the scales and limits I want to apply, it seems. The last patch I made (Dark Star) used Harrington 1200, which creates chords - loving this one. Sequins is pretty cool also - a mini sequencer - still learning all the details of that one too. Hi Dennis! Thank you for noticing that section. It’s so cool that happened. That’s why I love Modular, diving into the unknown with an adventurous open mind ready for anything that can happen and then really cool things happen (also really gross things happen 😂) My intention with this was to learn to play the Pachinko and the Disting Resonator like an experimental instrument. Instead of just setting up parameters for generative and letting it run I wanted to fully interact and be apart of the piece. How those sounds happened is partly a mystery. I know I was focused on quickly turning rate on pachinko clockwise to make a run of notes and using structure on resonator to change tones and somewhere in that combo that crazy strum happened. Since disting/resonator has two outputs I’m able to record it as two separate tracks. I was having tuning issues with the disting so one of the sides recorded I put a heavy reverb on it from the vahalla plug in in ableton and it smeared out all the pinging out of tune sounds and made these awesome pads that followed the main tones. The Mavis made those super sweet low tones and I think… (this was before I realized I should write out patch notes) …I had it patched to the constant beat out (t2) of the pachinko so when I would change the rate on the pachinko it would go from fast beats to slow swells. Definitely writing patch notes these days. This was the second thing I made when I had just 3 modules the disting ex, quadratt, and pachinko. Thanks again Dennis! Always a pleasure hearing from you.

I couldn’t find anything about it, so i pulled everything up and composted it immediately only to find out they were ladybugs!! Then I was devastated. It never came to mind they could possibly be ladybugs. They are horrifying. 😂 I took some photos of them too but decided to leave them out of the video, too hard to explain… that is too funny. Thank you for sharing this with me and for checking out my video.

Thank you!! 😊 I was pleasantly surprised when I patched the sample and hold utility from the Mavis into the VCO of the dfam and it produced that sweet slewed fluctuating tone in the bass beat. The magic of Modular, can’t get enough of it. Thanks for taking the time to give it a listen! Looking forward to your next video….
