She did an amazing job ! I love how towards the end she switch it on the readers and allowed us to see Dean perspective on his feelings towards Cora . Allowed us to fall in love with his character! Book lives rent free in my head .

I noticed some of the pages are dark with black writing and hard to see I might need to use my magnifying glass like the second page of the prologue and the second page of chapter one do you read those pages or skip them?

*SPOILERS* I’m late to the party but have just finished this book and needed to see people’s thoughts, for me I absolutely loved the Knox and Naomi storyline and the whole small town feel, but some of the sub plots were a bit off, like I still don’t really understand what Tina and Duncan were doing and why she had to run off in the first place? And the epilogues at the end draaaaagged I feel like we could have ended with a wedding and Naomi having flowers in her hair for a full circle moment would’ve been enough, unsure whether to go onto the next books as don’t know how interested I’ll be in the other characters storylines? 4.5 ⭐️ for me because despite its flaws I can’t seem to get this book out of my head and couldn’t put it down at some points

Thanks for your review. I agree the story started with a strong plot but it starts to go slow in the middle till the end.

I actually find Daphne and Mile very similar - their both echoists, both tend to see others feelings as more important than their own, both have upbringings that told them that they were less important, both are happy to let others steer their lives - even if that might not be totally what they want. Superficially one is super organised and the other is more carefree, but really they both drift with the tides set by others. All through the story we have examples of both D and M, putting others first even when it hurts them. Daphne doesn't let her Dad know how his behaviour affects and inconveniences her, Miles literally runs to Petra, Daphne treats her forgetting Ashleigh's birthday as if shed killed her family pet. Daphne, despite liking her join, decides to move because of her mom (who makes it clear that she leads a busy and active enough life so does not need her daughter at her beck and call). The two are very pleasant doormats - so its nice that they do grow out of it a little at least by the end. Peter and Petra (I dont think its an accident they basically have the same name) are also the same character, very self absorbed narcissists who truly put themselves first with complete disregard for how it will affect others. Unsurprisingly their relationship falls apart, because two self absorbed people cannot stay together for long. We also never really et to know them on their own terms, but we are encouraged to not give them the benefit of the doubt. I didn't really like this book - very meh and i agree the pacing was slow and meandering at points - but its not my type of novel (i read this for a book club), so its interesting hearing someone whose a fan of the author talk about it.

I think she could have just done force proximity with them and not tried to combine forced proximity and fake dating. It took away the tension,

I am also in a reading slump, but yestersay I watched the video where you recommended Verity and The Housemaid, and today I bought both of them. I have started Verity (I have read 2 chapters so far) and I'm hooked! :-) I had never read anything by her, and I love her writing style. I'm very intrigued. Thank you so much for your recommendations. I don't know if you have read The Southern Bookclub's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix, but I think this is also a good book to get out of a reading slump. I love the way he balances humor, creepiness and touching moments.

The housemaid was literally the last mrs parrish by liv constantine. There's a lot of better thriller authors out there. Frieda just copied it and added some twists so that it won't be entirely plagiarised.

I feel exactly like you about this book. It was hyped and recommended too much that I expected a really hot bombshell of a book but it was disappointing. I think I gave it a 4 Star only and I am one who loves dishing out 5 stars when I truly enjoy a book. I’m reading Maddest Obsession now and on Chapter 5 so we’ll see about this one.

This is the definition of “it’s a cow farm, there’s gonna be cows outside” … it’s a book derived from the Iliad which is abt the Trojan war so ofc it’s gonna be abt war😭i loved this book and found it easy to read but i also do love war books so i do think it’s just a preference of taste. If u don’t enjoy war stories, then u prob won’t enjoy this book

I’m only 100 pages in this book and I cannot stand BJ. He keeps saying how he would never want to hurt magnolia but continues to do stuff to hurt her??? He has such a double standard when it comes to her too, he can sleep around all he wants but she can’t?? I’m not rooting for them whatsoever

There’s a lot of complexity to their relationship. It’s very frustrating, but you learn to understand them more as the series goes on!

I just finished this and it was so long. Im all for a long character driven book if everything in the book has a purpose and adds to the story. I almost felt like Jessa had all these ideas in her head for all these characters and just couldnt leave anything out so added every tiny thing. The Taura/Tiller thing honestly felt like it was added just to show Tiller again cuz we love him. But, um no. I spent half the book waiting for the other shoe to drop and BJ and Magnolia to break up again because otherwise i couldnt see how the book was 700 pages. I really felt like this was not so much about BJ and Magnolia but grief and parental relationships. Which ok thats fine but it felt like things were happening just to make the book longer and add drama. Like why the heck were her parents having an affair. Her dads affair and then wedding to Marsaili was a somewhat big part of the other books and then lets just undo that to add some more drama. Just one more thing to give Magnolia a reason to be suspicious of BJ. I felt the same with Taura and Tiller like it was just thrown in there for something to talk about. All the photos and articles that kept coming out about BJ to show Magnolia didnt completely trust him. That happened like 3 or 4 times and could have been shown once and we would get the point but lets keep going with it to add some more drama. I think we are going to find out in the next Daisy book that something bad was going on and anyone associated with Jo/Christian and Julian were in danger. I think Daniela was Magnolias bodygaurd. When BJ and Magnolia are going on the trip for Bridget its mentioned that Jo or Christian strongly suggested Henry go too and i think they were trying to get him out of the country for his safety. Im excited for the next daisy book and glad Magnolia and BJ's is done lol

I felt prettyyyyy much the same reading this. It’s like, Patroclus is a minor character in the Iliad, there was SO MUCH an author could have done with that character, and they did….this 😂 ?!? I also didn’t think Achilles and Patroclus had a particularly healthy relationship, and I don’t think that’s called out in the book except for one character towards the very end.

I read this while on vacation and I was distracted. I'll need to read it again. That said, it was definitely NOT my favorite. Her dad and his new girlfriend, everyone staying at the apartment, Miles' sister back in town, it was just a lot. I gave it 3 starts. Here's my order of favorite EH books: 1. Book Lovers 2. People We Meet on Vacation (just re-read and i love Alex!) 3. Happy Place 4. Funny Story 5. Beach Read

Julia Whelan is fhe GOAT of audiobook narration! She told me on our video AMA chat the other week that there were a lot of bloopers for "Funny Story" that probably will be released soon and there was a typo regarding the first sex scene that she wanted to fix but there wasn't enough time 🤣. This wasn't my favorite book of Emily Henry's but I did enjoy it. I gave it a 4. I read it the day it came out and then listened to the audiobook version. I wish we saw more of Daphne and Miles interacting with Peter and Petra. The first part of this book was more interesting than the later half personally. I actually was in a reading slump after this book because I was so hyped for it. I ended up rereading your first two books afterwards to get out of my funk.😊 Current ranking: 1. Happy Place 2. Book Lovers 3. People We Meet on Vacation 4. Funny Story 5. Beach Read
