I loved beach read and I loved this book too, and I think they were very similar to each other so maybe that’s why

Thanks for your review. I agree the story started with a strong plot but it starts to go slow in the middle till the end.

I totally agree with you. I loved the first 25/30% or so. It was funny and I liked the chemistry between the couple. But they get together too quickly for my tastes (I know they’re not official or whatever but their reasoning not to be together isn’t strong enough, imo, so it felt to me like they were together because they essentially admitted they wanted to be). And there wasn’t enough plot. Miles showing Daphne around isn’t enough of a plot. And I know Emily Henry tried to introduce other conflicts (mainly with their parents but with Ashleigh too), but they just weren’t fleshed out enough and felt like an after thought. By the end of it I didn’t feel any which way about the characters anymore. It was a deeply average book, for me. Nothing too wrong with it, but it also wasn’t anything special apart from the beginning. Editing to add my EH ranking! 1. Book Lovers 2. Happy Place 3. Funny Story 4. People We Meet On Vacation PWMOV is the only one I genuinely don’t like 😅 sorry! Hoping I like Beach Read, though, it’s the only one I have missing.

Beach Read is her best book in my opinion. You should try Abby Jimenez books (I feel like her last 3 books have been amazing).

@@myfavbookbrontejaneeyre3752 I hope I’ll feel that way too! I’ll def read Beach Read soon. For Abby Jimenez I read Just For the Summer this month and absolutely loved it, one of my favorite books of the year so far! Pure perfection. I can’t wait to read more from her 🥰

@@popuri48 I loved Jimenez’s Part of Your World and Yours Truly audiobooks. I think I want the hardcovers of those two & Beach Read is going to have a cool hardcover coming out this Fall.

This is a sister novel to People We Meet on Vacation. Funny Story is the ending Sarah Torval deserved.

I read this while on vacation and I was distracted. I'll need to read it again. That said, it was definitely NOT my favorite. Her dad and his new girlfriend, everyone staying at the apartment, Miles' sister back in town, it was just a lot. I gave it 3 starts. Here's my order of favorite EH books: 1. Book Lovers 2. People We Meet on Vacation (just re-read and i love Alex!) 3. Happy Place 4. Funny Story 5. Beach Read

Julia Whelan is fhe GOAT of audiobook narration! She told me on our video AMA chat the other week that there were a lot of bloopers for "Funny Story" that probably will be released soon and there was a typo regarding the first sex scene that she wanted to fix but there wasn't enough time 🤣. This wasn't my favorite book of Emily Henry's but I did enjoy it. I gave it a 4. I read it the day it came out and then listened to the audiobook version. I wish we saw more of Daphne and Miles interacting with Peter and Petra. The first part of this book was more interesting than the later half personally. I actually was in a reading slump after this book because I was so hyped for it. I ended up rereading your first two books afterwards to get out of my funk.😊 Current ranking: 1. Happy Place 2. Book Lovers 3. People We Meet on Vacation 4. Funny Story 5. Beach Read

I actually find Daphne and Mile very similar - their both echoists, both tend to see others feelings as more important than their own, both have upbringings that told them that they were less important, both are happy to let others steer their lives - even if that might not be totally what they want. Superficially one is super organised and the other is more carefree, but really they both drift with the tides set by others. All through the story we have examples of both D and M, putting others first even when it hurts them. Daphne doesn't let her Dad know how his behaviour affects and inconveniences her, Miles literally runs to Petra, Daphne treats her forgetting Ashleigh's birthday as if shed killed her family pet. Daphne, despite liking her join, decides to move because of her mom (who makes it clear that she leads a busy and active enough life so does not need her daughter at her beck and call). The two are very pleasant doormats - so its nice that they do grow out of it a little at least by the end. Peter and Petra (I dont think its an accident they basically have the same name) are also the same character, very self absorbed narcissists who truly put themselves first with complete disregard for how it will affect others. Unsurprisingly their relationship falls apart, because two self absorbed people cannot stay together for long. We also never really et to know them on their own terms, but we are encouraged to not give them the benefit of the doubt. I didn't really like this book - very meh and i agree the pacing was slow and meandering at points - but its not my type of novel (i read this for a book club), so its interesting hearing someone whose a fan of the author talk about it.

Yeah, they lost me when Julia and Ashley started being best friends. It didn't make sense to me. Why would a late 30s/early 40s mom suddenly become best friends with Miles' 22 year old sister. Sure, I can imagine them having fun together a bit, but not the "picking up milkshakes" and running all over town vibe that it was shown as. Really made them seem fake.

I think she could have just done force proximity with them and not tried to combine forced proximity and fake dating. It took away the tension,

This book was a mixed bag. I thought the setting and friendship stuff was done really well. But the main characters didn’t fly off the page to me like other Em Hen characters, they didn’t feel like real people. And I just didn’t totally buy that they were soulmates, especially with all the ex stuff 😮💨

Emily Henry has resorted to pushing out books and compromising with the writing quality. Each book gets worse. sorry not sorry.
