I think Ann is missing something. You can’t separate Catholic doctrine from the customs that represent it. If customs grow up that change the perception that certain types of actions are wrong namely that of same sex couple blessings being acceptable practice despite the doctrine of heterosexual marriage, then the doctrine will lose its meaning over time. I would argue that many Catholics went along with the change of customs in Henry VIII’s new Church because he maintained the basic doctrines that most people wanted but began a shift in practice eg. prayer for the King in the Mass and not the Pope. It eventually led to the Protestant version of Anglicanism.

Keep in mind that when you say the LGBTQ contingent take no prisoners, neither do the Roman Catholics or Evangelicals. There is simply no room there for an LGBTQ person to be seen, received, and welcomed as a full person. I had the privilege of spending time living and working with nuns in Asia who did this work. I was asked to stand with two nuns at a bus stop. A bus arrived from another country and the nuns drew the women off the bus and into their refuge. I am a doctor and the nuns told me stay at the front of the house and we will call you if we need you. The nuns sat with each woman and spent hours just listening. Many victims were taken to that country as children . They had borne children to their " owners" and on returning home often felt angry and unwilling to return to their families, who were poor and had been stupid to believe the deception and give their child to the abuser. I hate to think what has happened to the unaccompanied children crossing the US border and thousands of children who went missing after they came with the big wave of Syrian refugees to Europe.

Hmmm, if he's wanting authentic Christianity, he should recall, from the one authoritative source (the New Testament), that the early church did NOT: 1) Persecute and kill -- for centuries -- those who had true, humble, and authentic faith in the Lord Jesus and His atoning work, but who disagreed with their Catholic dogma and practices 2) Say the atonement of Christ was insufficient -- you would still need penance and then still not HAVE ASSURANCE, you will probably still have to suffer for a while for your sins in purgatory!!! (Christ and the apostles would be APPALLED!), 3) offer the sacrifice of Christ over and over again in the Mass (again, APPALLED), 4) consider there to be a class of leadership which had dominance over the laity, (Jesus said in Rev. 2:6&15 that He HATED the deeds and doctrine of 'the Nicolaitans' - lit., "to conquer the laity" - which the RCC did in various ways, but primarily through denying the people access to the Word - mass in Latin) 6) pronounce anathema (an ecclesiastical curse) on ANYONE WHO CLAIMED TO HAVE ASSURANCE OF THEIR SALVATION through faith in Christ (!!), as well as on anyone who disagreed with their doctrines and practices (!) 7) "Go to bed" - be joined to - STATE AUTHORITY, with the back of it's civil and military power. It was spiritual adultery -- the church is to be joined to Christ alone!! This led to enormous corruption , persecution, and inordinate wealth and power making its way into the church of Jesus Christ, which in truth, is looking for a DIFFERENT city and future - a city "which has foundations, whose Builder and Maker is God." I wish this brother well in his search for TRUTH, and hope that it is not over yet. There is so much corruption, immorality, false doctrine, abuse, and murder that has been conducted and approved by Roman Catholicism from its inception that I'm somewhat amazed that he can be so deceived by it..... It's not that I'm defending any other church body (particularly not Anglicanism), it's just that truth in its purity is to be found only in the Word of God, and IT must be the measure for all truth that is embraced by God's people. No human body, such as the RCC, can be the SOURCE for what we believe. It must be the Word of God alone, and it must be used "for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness," as Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:16. IT is the measuring rod.

I had a similar journey. Brought up in the Church, left for left wing politics in the 80's, then the theatre , becoming a professional actor. I started a slow drift back to the Church and now write with my Christianity as the base of my creativity. Mr. Jacoby seems a very sincere Christian and good man. I think Evangelicals will stay because there is effectively no lines of authority in the C of E anymore. You can plough your own furrow in your parish or your alliance of parishes (there are several of those) and there is zero chance of a bishop or archbishop successfully interfering.

Jill Duff would be excellent; but a root and branch revision of the pool from which bishops are selected, the criteria on which they are selected, and the way of selecting them is deeply flawed, for the most part producing 'company' men and women who will accept the pernicious doctrine of episcopal 'collegiality' which in essence means 'being willing to close ranks, present a united front, and not spill any beans which might show the institution in a bad light. It is their lack of character, courage, competence that galls together with their cowardice and self-seeking. The handful of exceptions clearly shows the present methods have failed.
