Can you help me choose between the RX 7800 XT and the RTX 4070? I'll be using it for gaming and game development in Unreal Engine 5. I'm a beginner with 3D games and modeling (creating characters, environments, etc.), and I'm unsure which one to pick. The 16GB VRAM on the 7800 XT seems great for future-proofing, but if I use ray tracing at a medium level while making games, would it be able to handle it? I’ll also be using Blender for creating environments and characters, and I don’t mind if AMD has slower rendering speeds compared to NVIDIA, as long as it’s not too slow. Just feeling a bit confused about which one would be better overall

DON'T DO THIS. While it renders extremely fast, I tried this, and it ended up terribly. When you set your noise threshold so high, the denoiser is doing the heavy lifting for the image itself. It may look okay on a still frame or with really dark lighting like in this video, but even in this video if you look closer, you will notice an insane amount of flickering and random noise thanks to the denoiser not having enough information to render a series of images consistently. The way it works is that the noise threshold dictates to the render engine when it's okay to stop rendering more detail. The lower the threshhold, the higher the detail. If you set it to 1.0, the rendering is basically doing the least amount of work and relying heavily on the denoiser. This leads to inconsistencies between each frame as the lack of detail causes the denoiser to not be accurate during the denoising process. This results in shadows and highlights that have a rapid shimmery/flickering movement to them, which looks really bad, especially in well lit environments. Take, for instance, this shot at 0:17 If you look at the building on the other side of the explosion, the reflection of the fire boils and flickers like crazy. The only reason this is not instantly noticeable in this video is because it's very dark, and most of the scenes have a lot of movement. The second you look closer, though, every image is litered with this sort of ugly artifacting. What this guy did is that for some reason, he turned off the denoiser druing the lower threshold segements in order to make his point across. Only once he put the noise threshold to 1.0, he turned the denoiser on to show how good it looked. You are way better off setting the noise threshold to 0.1. It doesn't look bad, like he said. If anything, this looks fucking horrible and it's honestly shameful that he didn't tell people this before showing this MAGICAL trick which is not magical at all.

Cycles cannot directly be compared to Lumen. Cycles is Blender's path tracing engine. It is physically accurate and must therefore be compared to Unreal Engine's Path Tracer, which is also physically accurate. Lumen is a faster renderer for scenes where accuracy is not the highest priority.

Thanks for the tips. Another way how to reduce render times with volumetric lights is to render them to a separate layer and add them to the final image using the compositor. This way one can use a lower sample count without the image becoming too noisy. It also enables applying blur to the volumetric layer to further reduce noise without affecting the rest of the image.
@ulrika81982 ай бұрын
Hi! I really needed this comment! Do you perhaps, have a link on how to do this? I'm new to Blender.
@Max_Mustermann2 ай бұрын
@@ulrika8198 Hi. For a tutorial on using layers you can look up "How to Render with View Layers in Blender" on KZbin. As for using layers to render volumetric lights, I don't really have a tutorial, as it is something I mostly figured out via trial and error. But here is what I would usually do: 1. copy all scene objects that have to cast shadows into a new view layer 2. create a new "holdout" material and apply it to all objects in the new view layer. This will make sure that only the volumetric light gets rendered. 3. in the "Render Properties" tab set "transparent" under "Film" to make sure that the background is rendered as transparent 4. for the main view layer go to the "view layer" tab and under Pases>Light>Other tick the check box next to "Environment" to make sure the environment/background pass gets rendered 5. in the compositor combine the "Image" and "Environment" outputs of the main view layer using an "alpha over" node 6. in the compositor combine the output of the "alpha over" node from the previous step with the "image" output of the volumetric light layer using a Mix color->Add node. Tweak the factor to change intensity of light effect. 7. optionally add a blur node between the "alpha over" and "mix color" nodes from the following step, if the volumetric light pass is too noisy

All the nasa website has is a bunch of articles EDIT: I found the image through google image search. Now I just need to make the disk part brighter, but not sure what to change.
@davidkohlmann2 ай бұрын
The image is a mixture of multiple layers from the nasa website. Stars, fog, background noises and so on. I did some adjustments and layering to get what you can see in this video. Photoshop, gimp or other editing software for images , doesnt matter, all should work fine for this.

@davidkohlmann3 ай бұрын
Use unreal engine if you need realtime rendering. Even eevee next is not even close to what unreal does. If you still want to stick with eevee reduce as much scene loading as possible (texture, modifier loading etc) Everything that leads to performance issues in cycles, does the same in eevee and/or causes in longer built/rendertime. Bake your lights if you can, especially for animations. Don't increase shadow quality unless it's not absolutely needed. And yea
