Thank you once again, very poignant words to remember. So many things hit home with me as my father was in WW2 in the Canadian Merchant Navy. I also endured the same Legion parking lot stories waiting for my father to finish a cold one. So many memories, God Speed!

Excellent presentation of life behind the scenes of one of our RCAF Photographers. Myself, I have the same model of this issued camera that was used during WW2, Graflex Speed Graphic.

Thank you for your comments! I would love to learn more about the Graflex camera you mention. Can you tie the camera to someone in the Canadian Forces. You might enjoy more about Canadian military photographers at one of my websites; canadianfilmandphotounit.ca/

Cool to see Jack Nissan there. I believe James Leasor made him the focus of his book on Dieppe, “Green Beach”.

Thank you @mithridateseupator3492 for the comment - Richard Tomkies was very passionate about the topic of Dieppe and did a good job of doing interviews with those that were there. Dale.

Great work Dale! Am I wrong in thinking the colour film attachment to the “25th Brigade in Korea” film, the one you say probably comes from the RCN, was used in the recent CBC bit about DDay? If so, I was thinking that the film’s description of attributing it to DDay is wrong. To me the scenes look like they were taken during Operation Fabius, the practice landing, that occurred in May 44. They are very reminiscent of the photos that Gilbert Milne took for Fabius, but it looks like they were taken from a different LCI so it can’t be him. All in all another excellent production Dale!

Hi @mithridateseupator3492, thanks for the comment - I believe you are correct regarding the 'DDay' footage - another colleague has also indicated it must be a practice landing. I will be collecting all these comments and submitting these to Library & Archives Canada to possibly have this information added to the database. Like myself, CBC used the same material because well, you just never know, and makes for good TV ; )

So we have a Ram tank (never used in battle) and a landing exercise in Southern England. Interesting propaganda footage but not exactly "Invasion Europe", eh ?

Hi - thanks for the comment - this was the title information that was entered at the time of the acquisition. It does need to be updated and verified. So far, I am passing along good information that will aid in updating the description for the current record.

Well, his theory was right. A copy of Bill Grant’s film, roll boards and all, survived in the US National Archives.

Thanks for the comment - it was via colleague Ben Moogk that he was able to locate much of the Canadian war material that was lost in the NFB fire at Archives around the world. canadianfilmandphotounit.ca/2014/11/10/risen-from-the-ashes-the-british-pathe-archive-reveals-lost-canadian-footage/

The vehicles were all provided by private collectors or the Swords and Ploughshares Museum of Kars, Ontario. Many of the background folks in the crowd were Dutch Canadians and/or the descendants of Canadian liberators and liberated Nederlanders. One lady in the crowd is an octogenarian who met the Canadians as a little girl!❤

Thank you Mike for the invaluable information. It's the details like this that make the film even more relevant and compelling. It was great to see a Canadian production company shooting a war film about Canadians after so many years. Well done! Dale

I love snow and deep snow is ok to a point. But if i was out in the middle of nowhere and going one hundred yards took an hour or so would scare the hell out of me . Survival skills would determine your fate for sure. With no modern technology or gear these guys are the definition of toughness. Nice film
