looks like a hard landing, damaged engines, ripped open fuel lines, and overstretched the leg. Then it toppled.

Loosing one on landing is not the end of the world. Much better that loosing the cargo. I still remember people laughing at the idea of "reusable" boosters.
@Planum.
@Planum. Ай бұрын
I strongly agree. All the other rockets in the world loose their booster each flight, SpaceX is doing an insane job at landing those rockets in a reliable way. B1062 was reused 23 times, and everything has an end.

Weird, 67 year old body builder. I litteraly get Goose bumps and tearfull for the love I have for SPACEX, and the very cool music really phycs me up. Do not forget, China is not you friend anywhere on this planet or in space. OK Buddy. Every year the Chinese go over their game plan for their complete dominence in space. A big fat, CCP symposium on dominence in space. I love Giden like my dear dad, you know, and was hopping, to get MUSK AND BIDEN AS A FUTURE FREE WORLD FAMILY IN SPACE. Like Apollo but generationaly built upon the education of more Engineers, free world engineers that is being pulled together and around a Blank chech to our future in space. Sorry China, no dash lines in space. SPACEX, boosts the SPACE STATION were it needs to be, Twice as high as it is, I believe. Imagine that old thing redone to survive as a torist attractioin. The CUPLA? dome would a honeymoon suit. You would need sea sickness pills, pot, to enjoy the view. Let me say this and I said this to my dad at age 13 or so that, you do not do business with the devil. All these tough corporate guys thinking they can out wit the Chinese. LOOK it up. APPLE has to basically give you a new phone if it has a scratch on it, in China. All kinds of new rules they arbitrarily make up and enforce. I said to my dad, you cannot change the spots of a Leoppard. DAD!

@Planum. Yes, I'm so looking forward to that. Let's hope it's soon, and the catch goes well... I'm confident that if the catch goes well.. . I believe it will probably be the most impressive thing that has ever been achieved for space. Can't wait for it.

2:35 Are those shockwaves at 100s of meters above the olm a new thing due to the power of this rocket or is it the improved cameras (frame rate?) these days that make them more visible? The Falcon 9 produces pressure waves on liftoff but I don't recall seeing mid air shockwaves on any other vehicle.

Question, why wouldn’t the grid fins be put in vertical position for ascent? Why are they fixed in horizontal. I’m not taking about flush with the rocket like the falcon 9 btw.
@Planum.
@Planum. 3 ай бұрын
Excellent question. In my opinion, the actuators needed to raise them in a horizontal position for descent would add a significant amount of weight. Indeed, each grid fins weights 3t, so it would require very powerful actuators to move them to a horizontal position, given the position of the actuators relative to the grid fin. As we know all the actuators used for Superheavy and Starship are electric, so it would also use a lot of energy adding even more of them. What's more, the grid fins don't disturb the aerodynamic flow when they are perpendicular to the relative wind. That's why they only change the aerodynamic flow when rotating, which enables them to steer the rocket.
