Starship IFT-4 : Interstellar Cinematic Film
Starship IFT-4 took place on June 6th, 2024, and launched at 12:50 UTC. It is the first test flight of Starship with a successful soft splashdown of Super Heavy booster B11, and successful entire atmospheric reentry of Starship S29, which also managed to perform a soft splashdown in the Indian ocean despite major flap damage and multiple heat shield tiles loss.

All humanity will do once it explores space is take territoriality to the next level: from "Hey, this country has natural resources that we don't have in ours--let's bomb them!" to "Hey, this planet has natural resources that we don't have..." Realistically, you just about tolerate the people living in the same town or city as you. Those in distant towns and cities but still in the same country? Even less... People living in other countries? No thanks--well, unless they happen to share many cultural aspects of your country, in which case they should be kind of okay to interact with--and even then... (As the current rise in right-wing populism is reminding us of!) So, who knows what it's going to be like if ever there are humans living on Earth and others on Mars, and/or elsewhere...

Don't care what you think of the guy, the least we can agree on is the fact that it is AMAZING how it landed with severely damaged control surfaces. Kudos to the engineers. Amazing.

...and a KZbin suggestion pops up at the end covering the whole screen and blocking the view of the splashdown. I suggest you add 10 seconds of extra filler at the end to stop this happening. Otherwise, excellent.

2:35 Are those shockwaves at 100s of meters above the olm a new thing due to the power of this rocket or is it the improved cameras (frame rate?) these days that make them more visible? The Falcon 9 produces pressure waves on liftoff but I don't recall seeing mid air shockwaves on any other vehicle.

Ngl, I think nostalgia is getting the better out of ya'll. I understand that interstellar was great, but the fast pace of 30 raptor engines going off doesn't go well with a slow pace of this song. Hans zimmer composed so many pieces that go with the fast pace of a Rocket ship, for example: Ignition (Man of Steel) or Arcade (Man of Steel)

The only change I'd suggest is that you intercut the booster landing tracking/buoy video with the on-board video instead of showing them separately, otherwise its perfect.

The whole 1st part is done perfectly well. Fantastic timing all the way to the end of "No time for caution". After that, having the song starting again was a bummer. Unfortunately I have no good suggestion of how to keep the dramaturgy up, but SpaceX will deliver more good stuff, so there will be many chances to figure that out, if you like ;-)

Question, why wouldn’t the grid fins be put in vertical position for ascent? Why are they fixed in horizontal. I’m not taking about flush with the rocket like the falcon 9 btw.

Excellent question. In my opinion, the actuators needed to raise them in a horizontal position for descent would add a significant amount of weight. Indeed, each grid fins weights 3t, so it would require very powerful actuators to move them to a horizontal position, given the position of the actuators relative to the grid fin. As we know all the actuators used for Superheavy and Starship are electric, so it would also use a lot of energy adding even more of them. What's more, the grid fins don't disturb the aerodynamic flow when they are perpendicular to the relative wind. That's why they only change the aerodynamic flow when rotating, which enables them to steer the rocket.
