How does forge welds compare 2 stick welding??😮which is better? Any difference? Huh?
@DaveDoesMetals7 күн бұрын
Forge welding is done at the forge, and usually requires upsetting the steel or iron, making a scarf, heating it to a welding temperature (it will be very hot and looks slightly wet) and then hitting the two pieces together with a hanmer. Usually it's heated up to a welding heat and forged a few times. Forge welding is strong when done well, and there are quite a few places where forge welding is preferable to stick welding, like welding a bit of tool steel to the face or a hammer or the business end of a chisel, adze etc. I also use it for welding a steel leaf and stem on to a larger piece of steel. It looks more "natural" to my eye and I don't have to grind down any welds :) Stick welding is super convenient though and I use it quite often when I'm making things I couldn't fit into my forge. There's a lot of places where stick or other modern welding would be preferred. For example I would not want to forge weld pipe together.

I see what you're saying, except how can you claim these two pieces of metal are one piece when you showed us 2 different and completely seperate pieces. I can see the first piece you say is wrought iron all the way down and its square all the way it certainly doesn't have a flange like on the second piece that you claim is the same piece. it's clearly not.

Check one of my recent shorts. It'll show the separate sections of the metal.

Also, if you feel so strongly that I'm a liar and just wanted to post some fake video for clout, reach out to me on Instagram (@davesironco) and I'll send you the whole video where I cut out the part where I flipped the piece. Also is it so mind boggling to you that a piece of metal could be round on one end and square on the other? Try going to a scrap yard man, you'll see some shit that will blow your mind.

It's fun. I take a piece of steel, forge it into a flint striker, take an old shirt, make it into char cloth, and then use those and a rock to start a fire to make more stuff.

Багато залежить не лише від матеріалу, а й від термічної обробки, можна взяти сталь з високим вмістом вуглецю але без гартування вона буде гіршою ніж гартована сталь з меншим вмістом вуглецю

yeah lighters are super annoying lol cool looking, but sounded like a blower fan in the back anyway so the whole "old school" feel got kinda ruined . neat trick tho.
@DaveDoesMetals26 күн бұрын
Using flint and steel is a lot more fun than a lighter, plus I made the flint striker I used in the same forge I lit with it. By the way, I have a crank blower forge but don't use it often anymore because of an injury that gets aggravated when I use it. The electric blower is just more convenient for the work I've been doing. Here's my other forge. kzbin.info784DSus6DHM?feature=share

Love the old school fire starting.......until the electric fan came on... Then I thought why not just use a click torch lighter? Save the charcloth.
@DaveDoesMetals26 күн бұрын
Because I don't have a click lighter :)

@DaveDoesMetalsАй бұрын
Actually it's almost certainly American or European made steel and wrought iron. Seeing as it came from my area and was likely used on the farms around here anywhere from the 1800s to 1920.

For those who care, our little cat whose picture I used in the frame was named Coal. He passed away a few months back from kidney cancer. He was two years old and absolutely should have lived a much longer life. His brother Ash is still with us and as healthy as can be. I think that it's nice that this video features the little fella, even if it only has 150 or so views, it immortalized him in a way.

Absolute novice here- Why not make the whole thing from the more wear-resistant carbon steel? What advantages does the wrought iron have over that steel?
@DaveDoesMetalsАй бұрын
Well, wrought doesn't have any real advantages over modern steel besides the corrosion resistance. The main reason it was used in conjunction with steel is that wrought iron was a lot easier to make than steel and was therefore a lot cheaper. That's why you'll see a lot of tools being made of wrought with only the working edge or face being steel. The Bessemer process made steel a lot cheaper and easier to make so wrought started to fall out of favor after that.
