The husband (orginal one) is six feet under and left another girl child he dad with another lady. And the protagonist our princess diana now cries how life has been so hard for her.

Don't suppose there's anything in the form of a follow up, like a book version? Nowadays, it would be part one of a three part arc or something, highlighting domestic abuse and child neglect, although, in the case of Arlene, she was technically not a child anymore. It is hard to not wonder what happened next, and I don't just mean in the next episode either.
