Great video! I also agree with what stoneground1 says. I would also count with Mississippi or 1 thousands instead of just counting 1,2,3. You will get a better drop time with that. With my thanos pro cine, I added tennis racket tape on the handle and grip on the sled. That made it more comfortable for me, I also built a new case for everything cause the aluminum case it came with is too heavy and the foam keeps everything too tight. I pulled the sled out for the first time when I got it a little over a year ago and it scared me how tight it was around the connections on the top stage. I still love my rig though! I'm based in Austin so if you're down to link up and practice I'd be down for that. Again, great video man!

Wind is the enemy!!! Haha!!! Yes you could actually get the Volt on the Thanos, but this would mean buying a whole new gimbal and the Volt brain. Costing way more than what the entire rig was purchased for. lol Practice, practice and more practice!! Gotta love it!! They claim 70lbs for the arm I would try and get the rig to about 35lbs. Just a thought... Peace!!

Lol too much for me but thanks for the clarity! I didn’t know you could do that., the camera rig itself is at 20lbs right now. I may show some demo shots from around the house where it’s more controlled and a lot easier to fly but that’s no fun lol. Def noticed a lot more stability from adding the dual v mounts which I’ll do a video on later though! Indie film coming soon thanks for the watch! 🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥

Good stuff. A couple of pieces of advice. So glad you included the cut about the sandbag.. Haha. When finding your drop time I highly recommend staying close to the rig. Just because the handle is on the balancing stud doesn't always mean it's totally secure. Say your drop time is too fast and just by chance a small vibration occurs and loosens the handle, the whole rig flys off and crashes to the ground. Production nightmare!! Also when you are ready to dock your sled, make sure the rig isn't as low as you have it. Better to be up a little than low. And on that note, you really want to make sure your arm sections fly almost perpendicular. I recommend raising your socket block up on the vest and taking the section closest to the gimbal down. This will let the arm take more of the body movement out before it reaches the sled. I know we have discussed this monitor thing before. Haha. But for $36-$50 you can get a small SDI adapter on Amazon. I feel the monitor will become a distraction for you. You may want to look at it while operating and miss a mark. It could be useful if you mount it on the side and maybe let your 1st AC use it for focus pulling. Plus it is sucking out 12v at least from your battery. Batteries on set are crucial!! Anyway... love that you're getting to the craft and posting content!! And yes you are right, core and practice. My neighbors used to stare at me walking around my house practicing! Haha!! Keep it up and will be waiting for some more BTS stuff and the completed film. Peace!!!

Thanks for the comment! And yes, I actually ended up just using a black magic sdi converter on my most recent rig. I’ll try adjusting the block as well, I’ve been experimenting just trying to find the comfortable point and recently raised it higher. Still fine tuning but it’s getting there, definitely something I feel people just have to learn. (Much like the book talks about!) I appreciate the pro tips! More coming soon!

So the horizon is floating on the thanos, but original steadicams have electronic stuff that corrects the floating horizon, do I get it right? The second question, so how you gonna fix that on your shoots with the thanos?
@jamiejude
@jamiejude 14 күн бұрын
So yea some of the new high price steadicams have or are compatible to have a device called the volt which uses little belts to level out the sleds horizon and the tilt. To fix the horizon float on something like the thanos it’s just practice and determination. Im curious though if it is or could be modified to be volt compatible
@11.Pierre
@11.Pierre 13 күн бұрын
Not original, the ones with electronics are just newer versions. Original stesdicams don’t have it! Idk why volt was slipping my mind when filming but yes, newer ones from tiffen feature volt! As of now volt is not compatible with Thanos/other steadicams. And yes with practice, you essentially use your hand to control basically similar to original Steadicams/any steadicam without volt basically. And getting a proper balance will help as well but your hand compensates when moving around basically.

I picked up the SD600 for about $430 on Amazon. I had a $250 gift card from Amazon, so my out-of-pocket cost was super low. The version in the video the second version of the same light, the SD600-II. From what I can tell, the main difference is the ballast. The upgraded ballast has a color display where as the old version has a black and white display. I kind of like the old version of the ballast, as the connectors are not on the bottom of the unit, so the unit can fall to the ground (accidentally, of course) without smashing your connectors. Definitely a design oversight at GVM. Also, old reviews complained about the ratchet being made of plastic and not adjustable. Well, even the original version had the upgraded metal adjustable ratchet system. Feels solid, even with heavy mounted on there. I also encourage people to check this out above their SD650B. The mounting system on those has serious compatibility issues. This version has none of those and has nearly identical power for even less money than the Pro.

I very much would like to give you some advice on your setup. I wonder about your placement of your monitor? The reason operators put the monitor at the base is so they can see where they are walking avoiding any obstacles and being able to keep frame at the same time. Plus it takes strain off your neck. I have been looking at this rig for awhile now and I simply cannot stand their product marketing!! That being said, there are reasons for the batteries being opposite of the monitor. All about inertia and dynamic balance. Rule of thumb, you should try and keep your gimbal as close to the top stage as possible. This helps with dynamic balancing. And in the video I see way too much stuff on your camera setup. If you are flying with a battery on your camera then you really don't need that many batteries on the bottom stage. I recommend getting a cage for your monitor and putting the batteries on the backside. This way you won't need to extend your post too much. Your follow focus remote should be on your gimbal handle. You can figure a way to mount it and you will have control of your focus without stopping to set focus and also not have that extra weight on the side of your camera build. Being streamlined is very important for dynamic balance. There is just too much going on up there with your camera build. I highly recommend you put your monitor on the bottom. I'd hate for you to not see even the smallest of obstacle(i.e.-rock, step, etc.). There could be irreparable damage to your rig and camera if you were to take a spill. Not to mention you getting injured in the process. Safety is key. If need be have a spotter. Just like weight training, there is a limit. I hope you take this advice, it will help you become a better operator with better footage. Keep up the good work and never stop chasing that dream!! Peace!!

With that being said, i'm mainly practicing for my own use and likely wont' do it for others. Thanks for all the tips though, you're saying a lot of what the OG folks in the group say. I wouldn't be surprised if you aren't already in the group lol, you clearly know a lot about it. But yeah it's a work in progress, this is just me and a friend at the park working out kinks! also, that dji focus pro has to be mounted near the camera so i can't put it on the handle anyway. (reason i got it is to use the AF it provides for cine lenses, i just didn't have it hooked up here) Overall the tips are in line with what i'm currently learning, i'm not worried about it. it'll all work out --- With time, it'll be fine! you're watching someone go from 0 to 100 lol, so the kinks will get ironed out!

Hey, So for starters I purchased this solely for my indie film work. (Films I’m writing and producing) the film I’m using it on isn’t out. So I don’t worry too much about brands since I know this is ultimately for my film work / music videos I do for others but mainly my movies. 1. This is purely based on balancing, with proper balance it’s as smooth as a whistle. I’m still learning to properly balance myself but ideally, if you balance it - any steadicam will work the same. 2. This looks like a solid option, main difference is load capacity. Thanos can hold up to about 70lb while the other brand is $20lbs. I purchased this because it was future proof just in case I ever got a much bigger setup and affordable. 3. They are similar, I was recently at NAB and the difference is minimal. I had several guys comes by our booth and feel the same way- so I’d say personal preference is key. This system has electronics in so that’s a bonus depending on how you want to run it but electronics aren’t needed. 4. What type of test would you like? I have a Komodo and the F6 - I am making a breakdown of the steadicam rig soon as someone requested this as well. 5. It will work exactly the same as any other steadicam! I actually used KZbin videos for other brands to balance but this setup is identical. I feel like steadicams in general are just not easy to balance, in terms of true dynamic balance but I will make a video on this as well!

@@11.Pierre Got it, regarding test videos, any type will work with your steadicam setup. When I was doing my research I also see the advantage of Thanos in holding more weight vs real Steadicams, so I am wondering does it do it's job as you want as you prefer?
@11.Pierre
@11.Pierre 2 ай бұрын
@@ciinelog I see and virtually no difference. Don't get me wrong, if you hop on the 'pro steadicam' group on FB majority will recommend the brand but that's just people in general. Everyone likes brands but paying more isn't always better. Now you'll probably find more resources since they've been around longer but based on my experience at NAB. (had several people stop by the booth and checkout the steadicam) many said it was pretty identical. I also have this steadicam handbook that I am using as I am learning myself, I have just completed my set up now that I added the focus pro to it and got my monitors set up at the bottom/sdi all that good stuff. So I will do an updated video specially on balancing with proper footage. For value, it's hard to beat - you have this and the LAING system that are both budget friendly.

I will do a breakdown video of my steadicam set up, I'll rig it fully and show it. (v mount on camera) v mounts on bottom for balancing! And I use a quick release plate to make it easy to detach but yes there is a locking plate at a the top, I haven't had issues. as long as you have the right length 1/4 screws, it's pretty secure. let me know if you have any more specific questions and I'll go into detail about it so you can make a justified purchase.

That mounting is a huge pain. Not only because it's two m4 screws, but also because the LIDAR is limited to a distance of 300mm from sensor. For most of my use cases this number is too low to place it under mattebox, closest to the lens as possible. Weird limitation that I really can't get. Also the cables are too short, and DJI does not sell longer than 30cm cables.

They definitely could’ve tweaked this and made it easier 🙄. So far this is my only real gripe, out of the box this should’ve been addressed and adjusted before release.

@@11.Pierre I really hope they will listen and adjust firmware at least - like adding a custom sensor distance, or a bigger range. One can dial in adjustment for diopters (it's a simple math), but the range is too narrow in the UI to do so (300mm). Cables aren't really an issue, considering one can use extension cables, maybe someone will come up with custom ones (like Alvin's or Mutinity or someone else). But as of now their development team obviously did not consider any real cinema cameras (and I mean any cinema camera with a cinema lens over 3K in budget per piece) on development - everything is designed too short.
