Strange day, testing i.r on L-L open circuit, N and E fine. Checked every socket in the house can't find. Left L out of MCB and went around with socket tester all lights bleeping every socket shows clear, 🤔

Gonna say socket,pins on the plug have opened the socket over a period of time making the connection between plug and socket arc.

I wired some bain Marie's into a 16amp commando plug and set up via a switched 13amp fuse to keep the fuse on the circuit. Plugs were burning like this one and I thought I had come with the answer until 3months later I got a call that the fuse holder in the spur had melted!

It’s pulling just under the blowing current of the fuse for extended periods. This is the danger of fuses that use a melting wire. You would never design a circuit with a 13amp fuse in it if that circuit could draw close to 13amps. You would have an overhead to allow the fuse to be at a safe temperature. This is the downfall of uk plugs. They are great for small appliances that can be fitted with a 3 amp fuse. The 13amp fuse is more of a hazard than a help if it has a modern circuit breaker on it.

Apprentice here! Might sound like a daft question but could you explain why double pole rcbos? Wouldn’t your o/s lights rcbo trip with an earth fault as Rcd side detects earth fault?

That appliance must be hardwired if it is a high wattage one and is used for an extended period of time.

Could have just been an appliance left on and drawing just under the 13A max. Had a factory heater that drew 12.9A and they never switched it off in winter. The plug and socket melted and looked just like this.

Maybe the plug top fuse as been replaced with a nail or something
@merlin54765 сағат бұрын
looks like the fuse carrier in the plug was the issue.

Good morning. You're knowledge is second to none. Have you ever considered teaching at college or even doing night classes for upcoming electricians.

Looks like a loose fuse holder in the plug(top) to me at first glance. Or maybe the fuse is counterfeit or something?

Cheap socket, pins not a tight fit on socket contacts causing arcing over time & over heating, not necessarily a fault on either just cheap manufacturers 😮
@timbo196 сағат бұрын
That socket is an old style Crabtree so not one of the unknown el-cheapo brands.
@AMP36Ty5 сағат бұрын
@timbo19 still get poor manufacturing even from crabtree now & again 🤷

I'd say too much current draw of appliance over an extended period. I have noticed pins get warm/hot when using an electric heater for extended periods. This is why I would not plug in a EV charger that draws more than 10amps.
@JohnDundee-el2ro6 сағат бұрын
Did you check the cont in the flex sometimes it's a broken wire in the flex that causes that not a loose connection in the socket or plug top when I checked the flex with my volt stick it was ok up to 200mm from the plug top then no voltage after that so loose connection with broken strands

Is the addition of the RCD needed because outside lights were on the circuit or because new alterations have been added to the circuit? Both circumstances would require this would they not?
