It always amazes me how such an inherently dangerous supply system has become "Standard", all to save a bit of cable cost. It also results in noisy earths even without a fault. Identified two open pens in the last few years, both by a quick clamp meter check.

How many times have you isolated the installation and disconnected the earthing conductor to do a Ze without checking for current on the earthing conductor? I would say that there are a lot of sparks who have been very lucky in the past.

Spare a thought for plumbers. If the pen conductor is broken, the neutral can often divert through pipework. Some plumbers connect a jump lead if they are breaking an incoming metal supply pipe.

Nobody is clamp metering the main earth before a Ze is my opinion. My company is big and had procedures but this ain't one, which is surprising when I think about it as that's a real risk
