Maple is a softer wood if your worried about it scuffing then do the walnut but I do think the maple looks better if you put a epoxy finish on it, it will work better and easier to repair if it does kit scuff or marked

Also I don't have to wedge the stuff when it's done I do what I call slam wedging I don't know if anybody else does this but if you just take you know maybe like three or four coffee cups worth of clay whatever that weighs out to be just you know like a ball about the size of a cantaloupe and slam it down and slam it down and slam it down on my canvas table which I recommend everyone to get or make I should say That's all it requires to make sure I never have any bubbles I never have had an s crack in probably 10 years it's actually perfect when it's done I don't have to wedge it a bit The only time I wedge it is if I let it dry out too much I will flatten it spray it walk away for 10-15 minutes while it absorbs the water I'll wet it a while do that three or four or five times whatever it takes to get it to the right plasticity and I'm done it's very easy Clay absorbs water faster than you think it will You can watch it suck into the clay even if it's relatively wet already. At least the clay bodies that I use. I'm looking for a easy homemade clay body that just uses maybe a couple of ingredients like to make a brown clay high iron content clay I use red art and Hawthorne only two ingredients and makes a beautiful nice throwing clay body I mean you can't ask for anything more than that two ingredients and done. I'm not crazy about how dark it brown it is when it's fired but I have come up with a few glazes that work nicely with it You get a very interesting effect if you use seafoam I can't remember who came up with that seafoam but it's really nice on that brown it gives a very interesting effect

This is much like I do but I don't strain it ever I have five or six buckets going at a time with various stages of dryness. So I just make very very loose liquid even looser than slip and then I move it over to the drying stage and it it settles like sediment and packs itself together there's no bubbles in it when it's done I take it out and put it on a normal board I don't use a plaster slab I mean I could I got a couple but it seems to dry out too fast and I want to give it some shelf life while it's drying because I don't know what kind of projects I'm going to get into and it's usually a gigantic mound. When I know I'm getting low on clay I'll make a bunch of balls and put them in Tupperware snap them shut and they still will dry out a little bit so you got to check them every couple of days to make sure they're not trying out. But this way I always have a big mound of clay drying and just about within a day of being able to use and that clay is the best clay I don't know why it would be any better than brand new clay maybe it's cuz of that bacteria that builds up into it people talk about. But it seems to be more plastic after you've done that. I've even had a problem where I have only had very small amounts of low fire clay so I let those dry out to perfectly dry in little chunks I break them up as they go and then I weigh those out and put equal amount of Hawthorne high fire mixed with it and it's a pretty damn good low GROG cone 6 when it's done

You have really given me hope. I retire at 53 and got into wheel throwing pottery. I was a slip caster before. After 1 year of throwing, my back really bothers me. I have started hand building to give my back a break. Are you selling these setups?
@OceanwayArt8 күн бұрын
No, not fore sale. Brent(wheel manufacturer) does sell them.

This is just what I need for my Skutt!! Just need to find access to welding/metal cutting space... If they are not against the wall and don't have wheels do they still get pushed around? Or are they pretty stable?

I work myself a lot with lanthanides for other purposes (i'm an optical glass scientist), your work is very interesting ! I always loved the intensity of colours rare-earth can bring to a glass/crystal. Another very interesting thing is that it can give some very strong fluorescence properties to your glazes, in the case of Erbium, using UV-light you can have some green-reemission. Some other ones I really love are Europium and Holmium. The first one can give great color change depending on the redox conditions you use for the glaze preparation, and Holmium oxide is very unique, because it can change color depending on the light environnement it is placed in ! (in a broad spectrum light, ie sunlight it appears yellow, and with LED green-blue-red lighting, it appears pink)

I’m just starting out in a ceramics class and I realize an injury I got 20 years ago, and that I currently get PT for 2x per week, is preventing me from throwing while sitting. I’m trying to see if my community college can make an accommodation for standing, but I would love to see a tutorial on how you actually throw while standing. Like where you brace your arms and such.

Interesting.. i have a 5 gallon bucket under my sink with a cloth pinned over the top with clothes pins. But I was only using it with my washing my hands water. I am going to switch the towel I have on the top of the bucket to a pillow case in an ice cream bucket with holes in the bottom and pillow case and try this. I think I could set the bucket with the pillow case and holes.. sitting on blocks in the sink.. and the water could drain into the 5 gallon bucket under the sink.. and I could drain my throwing water. Definitly going to try this for sure. Thanks. Would sure solve my stinky water sitting all over the place.
