What a pleasure it is to see content creators producing such beautiful images and approaching the subject with so much passion, it’s almost touching. Your video is truly a little work of art. Well done on the gray/blue tones and the framing that really highlights the various consoles. Wishing your channel and creativity long life, and go Analogue Pocket! I recently gave in and got the metal version, what a masterpiece.

Very interesting, i would like to check that feel. I got a R36s and find the analog button position unconfortable. Actually when i put my thumb down from the d pad, it comes comfortable, without bending, on the position that seems to be that on the RG40xxv A-stick

There seems to be a divide about the position of analogue sticks when there is just one. I personally like the appearance of directly below, and disagree with the argument about it needs to be at an angle. That makes sense in modern gaming when you will need quick access to both, not retro gaming when you're only going to use one. Slide your hand down one inch, and it is comfortable. And looks way better, to me. On the rg405/406 it seems to make sense to put them inside more. Not on the 40xxv, in my opinion. And I've used the rg351v for about 3.5 years without ever feeling uncomfortable using that analogue.

Definitely not a bad deal. And if it's that cheap, it might even be worth some experimentation with plugging up the analogue stick holes and painting it. It looks like a blank canvas when you receive it. I'm considering those options, myself. But if I'm comparing it to stuff I already have, I don't have anything new I want to keep around.

Great review, I think that the 40xx v is also trying to eat The ayaneo Pocket DMG’s lunch before it even get a released. Of course the later device is much more powerful and premium, but to what benefit?

Seemed like that was one of their biggest influences. But they failed to achieve that level of greatness. I'm anticipating the Ayaneo DMG to retire me from handheld collecting. Haha.

I'm kinda disappointed in this thing. The inputs are amazing, but the rest of the device cant deliver. The screen is a 6/10 compared to the RGB20SXs 9/10 (by IPS standards), the resolution sucks for 16 bit consoles, can't run shaders because it can't integer scale things without making them really tiny, at that point the extra screen size is wasted. And while PSX and N64 scale perfectly, the H700 barely has enough power to game with a crt shader on. Audio glitches quite a bit on PSX. So really it's more of a GBA handheld with some mild PS1 and N64 for me.

@KyleRuggles I didnt cover a lot of the "what it can do" type stuff, because it's the exact same device inside as about 5 previous releases they did in the past year. Hdmi out works great. Outputs to your tv's proportions.

They made the right call having the joystick not directly below the DPAD imo. While it would look better, the ergonomics would be worse.

@@seanms35 I have heard that argument. But I think that angle of approach only makes sense for modern gaming where you need access to both. On games where you use one, you slide your hand down.

@@NaraMakesGames I’m trying that out just on my phone, but it feels awkward. From just observing most people at work, everyone has the tendency to hold their devices evenly. Feels quite unnatural to have the hands at different positions.

Correct - your left thumb would constantly be brushing up against the joystick when using the dpad if Anbernic designed it the way articulated in this video.

It is correct, ergonomics first before aesthetics, that's the true purpose of design. Design is based on usability, not for being an eye-candy.

I think the RG40XXV is a win: small bezels and sharp overall design; bigger screen; excellent D-pad according to reports. All this on a budget device, like 1/3 the price of alternatives which might have better details and specs.

@jordanmocny2690 I'd say about the same. Especially if you don't use triggers a lot. If you play stuff in 64 bit range, anbernic might be more comfortable since you will need triggers a lot. I never touch them on the Analogue.

The system looks great. While I understand that you have a personal preference for the design, the change you mentioned for the thumbstick to be aligned with the D-pad would cause most users attempting to hold it like they would a Gameboy hit the thumbstick. This is all subjective, of course, and I enjoy the quality of your video! I forget that the thumbstick exists because I never bumped into it. I've been using it for a few days and have had a blast. I just wanted a bigger Miyoo mini plus. I would say, though, that it would be 100% better if the thumbstick wasn't present at all, lol.

interesting take on the placement of the joystick. while it may subjectively look better directly under the dpad, I think that would be vastly less ergonomic just like in the R36s, which I have. I think its placement on the lower right of the dpad has a more ergonomic feel as it would resemble a PS controller more. It requires less to no adjustment for the left hand to switch between using the dpad and the joystick. But I am yet to get this handheld so some of this is just speculation at the moment.

1:16 weirdly enough, GB aspect ratio (10:9) is almost square. It does look weird on that powkiddy but not on the analogue pocket. btw, you summed up how I feel about the analog stick perfectly and I would actually buy your design without the stick.

Great explanation on your theoretical perfect GB style handheld. Always interesting to hear the nuances. A thing I feel is an important point to mention though, is that the analogue stick is almost functionally pointless, as it snaps to the same 8 cardinal directions that the d-pad can already do. Therefore, thinking it'd help anyone with 3d N64 games or similar, would be wrong.
