Breaking down my favorite handheld gaming consoles of all time... until now... so that I can look back in a year or two and see how much the landscape has changed. With stuff like the Ayaneo DMG or the Switch 2 on the horizon, I can imagine some big changes.

My current favorite is the RG35XX H. It's portable enough, but it's not too small for my aging eyes. I'm rocking the orange Analogue Pocket and Zelda Switch like you.

I picked up an RG351V a few years ago and never looked back. As someone who doesn't have nostalgia for any handheld console (my only handheld growing up was one of those 9999 in 1 Tetris handhelds - long story 😅), the form factor drew me to it. It's indeed perfect for fairly large hands. It also sparked my interest in the Gameboy and games from that generation. I even picked up a GB Color on a recent trip to Japan and started looking into some simple modding. I loved the video and the channel presentation (I have a feeling you have a background in design) and look forward to watching more.

Pocketability trumps all for me in the handheld space. I don't carry a bag or anything, so my handheld needs to seamlessly slip into my pocket and not be noticed; there are precious few that do this. Even my Miyoo Mini can be a bit bulgy, as I feel it necessary to have a case on it and really the only thing that does it quite well I find is a DSi. I did just pick-up an RG405m in the hopes it'll be a similar little candybar in my pocket that I can completely forget about.

How these devices look matters! Part of the lust over the analog pocket or this new Ambernic 4” vertical is about the aesthetics- design matters!

I was this close to purchase an Analogue Pocket but boy does AP screw you over with shipping costs if you’re in Europe. Then there’s import duties and taxes that need to be paid too. It’s just too expensive.
