Why did I never think of putting feed bags down under roosting bars? Duh!

I like this idea of being able to remove the perch easily. I would put wood chips/straw to catch the poop and then compost it later. I also got those drinking cups, I made the mistake of using them with our chickens, turkeys and ducks in one pen. The ducks would empty our 5 gal bucket everyday. Lol, our poor chickens and turkeys. Thank you for sharing! 💜

It is always hard when an animal dies for no apparent reason. One of the hardest things about homesteading is having to deal with death on a fairly regular basis.

Are you still doing the rabbits? Why not try putting the droppings on your garden?
@RaisingHaneys
@RaisingHaneys Ай бұрын
We are, and we have plenty of the droppings 😂 I had put some directly on one bed early season and they still haven’t broken down, but I have a friend that makes a “soup” with it that I think would work really well. Since my garden was lacking so bad in nutrients I just wanted something I felt like would be quick and strong, but I’m definitely going to utilize the free fertilizer the rabbits give in the future!!

You are fertilizing at a pretty light rate. I would think more along the line of a handful per 4X8 bed, but it is safer to apply a little at a time. You can also sprinkle the fertilizer on the ground and then use the noozle to water the fertilizer into the soil. You might also try to fence your garden in and let the chickens free range everywhere but the garden. No need to keep a rooster that is mean. Most people will give you roosters since they have more than they need. If you lived close by I would bring over 4 roosters and let you choose which one you wanted. Of course while you were making up your mind, I would slowly slip off and drive away.
@RaisingHaneys
@RaisingHaneys Ай бұрын
Haha! We don’t need anymore roosters than the one!! That was my first time using the fertilizer, and I agree it was not enough. The next few times I upped it from about 2 gallons to 4-5 gallons and I saw tremendous improvement in the garden in the weeks that followed! I even started to get a few (small) jalapeños! I’ve backed off a little to not overdo it with the fertilizer but the next time I use it I’m definitely going to do what you suggested and just sprinkle the fertilizer then water, that seems much easier and quicker! Thanks for the tip!

Your garden is looking good for a second year garden. This time of year things can get tough, at least where I am at. For me broccoli is much easier to grow in the fall than in the spring. Once it gets hot they are done. I am in Texas, zone 9a and I will plant my seeds inside this week for transplanting this fall. Planting time can be pretty important depending on where you are located. In the south we really have 2 short growing seasons, in the spring and in the fall. Not sure where you are located.

I’m in the south too, north Arkansas, so I feel that long summer heat! I’m giving broccoli another shot this fall, I’m starting seeds today so hopefully I can get a little more practice in before the last frost 🤞🏼

I don't know if it is that you don't water enough or that you don't have enough wood chips in your garden beds, but honestly my squash beds are going crazy and I don't maintain them at all. They just grow and keep giving us new vegetables. Not much effort on my part. No fertilizers or pesticides. Holy cow, now that I watched the rest of your video I am shocked. What is going on with your peppers? I think you might be right and it may be the soil... It shouldn't be this hard for sure... Where did you get the soil from? Is your compost safe?
@RaisingHaneys
@RaisingHaneys 2 ай бұрын
@@NeoKailthas I definitely don’t think watering is the issue, I’ll admit I’ve slacked off quite a bit after not seeing much return, but I definitely stayed on top of it for a while! In the next part of the video I test the soil and I think we figure out what the big issue is! That should be up in the next day or too. We got our compost from a local plant nursery and I assumed that would be good enough without amending it in any way, probably a rookie mistake 😬
@NeoKailthas
@NeoKailthas 2 ай бұрын
@@RaisingHaneys Looking forward to it. I am glad you figured out the issue. The reason I asked about the source of the compost, is because I've seen people kill their soil for a year because the compost they used wasn't ready yet. Either way good luck with your garden!

We grow all our squash, pumpkins, zucchini, yellow squash, honeynut and butternuts up on trellis's. It's so much easier to spot eggs and squash bugs. Zucchini and yellow squash we plant in July as the squash bugs are so much less than in the late spring early summer. Only spray Neem in the evening and rinse off in the morning. That way you won't kill the beneficial bugs and bees. A mist of milk and water works great to reduce the population of aphids as does a strong stream of water.

Thank you so much, that is all such wonderful advice! All this is still pretty new to me so I’m just trying to learn as I go. Since this video I haven’t noticed anymore squash bugs or eggs but one of my pumpkins got infested with a squash vine borer so I’m really trying to avoid the spread of them! I have marigolds planted and I have noticed the borers being attracted to them so that seems to be working too! I’ll definitely add some trellis’s next year and try again using those!

That’s just a temporary corral that you see there that we put up to be able to work the animals that week, we wanted it to be easy to put up and take down. What you see here is just held up with zip ties, definitely not meant to last! Our actual full pasture is very secure with posts set in concrete and everything reinforced. So far we’ve had them (plus 3 pigs) inside our large fenced area and no one’s gotten out so so far so good! We do plan to take down this corral you see here and move it around wherever it suits us best for the moment! 😄

Hi there! Thanks for sharing your process! I've been going back and forth between using this Garden-Seal (which now comes in a handful of colors) and other pricier products (Timber Pro Internal Wood Stabilizer being my top choice) but am leaning toward Garden-Seal because of the relatively lower price. Who knew wood preservation was so costly?? Anyway, were 3 coats of Garden-Seal tacky/sticky when the dried?
@RaisingHaneys
@RaisingHaneys 4 ай бұрын
I think the garden seal worked great! It went on super easy and not sticky at all once it fully dried! Since using a cheaper wood I wanted to seal them so I can get as many years out of them as I can and so far they are holding up nicely!

@@RaisingHaneys Thank you so much for taking the time for this detailed response! Happy to hear you've had great product performance so far! I'm in the same boat--I need the raised beds I made out of lower cost wood to last as long as absolutely possible.

Im glad I could help! I will say on the 8 ft side I only used a small metal bracket for reinforcement and I wish I would’ve used multiple 2x4s instead! As soon as we added the dirt and everything settled our boards starting bowing out and now it’s too bowed to add reinforcements 😬
