I'm new at this but that wire on the side annoys me as well. I heard you mention making a good thread base on top of the wire might help. So why don't we tie the wire in before anything else and build all the thread base on top of it...

My first steelhead on the fly was with this, in the electric pink color. Love catching them on my own flies, and cooking them in the smoker

I have been fishing a variation of this pattern for over 20yrs. I use it as a dropper behind a Stimulator. It is my "go to" nymph as a dropper and it has worked very well on streams from Arizona to Wyoming.

Killer pattern. It’s legit. I use it here on the Flathead. I swing it behind a elk hair. It works for me. Be sure to load it up with some gunk.
