Thanks for the video. I have a Canon R5 with RF 100-500mm lense. I take pictures of wildflowers. Could you please tell me your typical settings on the R5? Also what extension tubes would you recommend. I am anxious to get a little closer for macro photography without breaking the bank. Thanks.
@PabloGEPhoto4 ай бұрын
Hi Alan. My settings change a lot depending the amount of light and how much depth of field I want for a given look. Typically I will shoot the RF 100-500 relatively open at f5.6 or 6.3 if I want a more “dreamy” effect with a very shallow DOF. Or I may go to f16 or even smaller if I want a bit more DOF. Since I usually shoot handheld I put camera in high speed shooting to get 4-10 photos every time I press the shutter, hoping at least one will give me focus right where I want it. Specially if there is a bit of breeze that moves flowers. For extension tubes I have used Meike for the R5 and just bought a new Meike set and for my new OM Systems OM-1 micro four thirds camera. I bought them at Amazon.

Thanks Allen. I think you will like the RF100-500. Just got back yesterday from Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley and I paired this lens with the R5. Great combo with a lot of flexibility. I want to thank you for your advice. I watched your earlier version of this advice video ahead of my first visit ever to Carlsbad in March 2023. Here was my experience; First, having long ago sent my kid into the world I overlooked that the dates I chose were in the middle of Spring Break, so I was shocked at the number of people in the Visitor Center. But, with two 8:30 entry permits and two full days to explore, I did not have to be in a hurry in the Caverns. I tried a handful of flash photos, early on the first day, but felt VERY intrusive on everyone else’s experience, so changed to ambient-light-only shooting. Also flash produced flat images, so I left that behind on the second day. To facilitate ambient light shooting, I used a tripod, but mostly as a monopod (because o0f crowded trails), and used the railing or stone trail edging to brace my camera (Lumix G9 with 12-60mm lens). I shot with burst mode a lot, hoping that at least one of the images might not suffer from camera shake (works well, if you use good anti-camera shake technique). And, I shot some HDR sets, to gain dynamic range in post production. I used the shutter release 2 second timer and/or a remote release cable to minimize shake. Finally, I made use of Lightroom Classic’s new Enhance Noise Reduction feature to clean up the inevitable sensor noise. The end result is that I have a lot of sharp, low noise and pleasing images captured over two full days inside Carlsbad Caverns.
@PabloGEPhoto6 ай бұрын
Hi Misha. Thanks for sharing your experience and approach when photographing the Caverns. As you saw, photographing there is challenging but with modern cameras we have much better options. Add to that the great AI driven noise reduction options now available in Lightroom, Topaz Photo AI, DxO Pure Raw 3 and others. Hope you had a great time.

Is this glitch in PureRAW 3 with version 3.8.0, build 30, 64 bit? With this - my impression of 'perfect' suffered a bit ;O) But to be fair I have rarely used it with that high ISO.
@PabloGEPhoto6 ай бұрын
Hi Eigil. Sorry for late response. The problem with all the AI tools is that they are image dependent. In other words, how close is our image to the ones (ten of thousands) that were used to train the AI model.

Many thanks Pablo! This was extremely useful…. I am thinking to buy Pure Raw 3, because I also see from the trial version a very slight improvement in the demosaicing of raw files (over Lightroom). This is quite subjective, I realise. Also, the lens corrections are much better. And the colours I also like a little bit more. My question, you are using Pure Raw 2. Is this because you prefer that version - or you just did not upgrade yet? My only real concern with Pure Raw is the limitation of sharpening choices, there are some choices, but I would prefer more control in this area. Thanks for your thoughts - and happy Christmas to you 🎄
@PabloGEPhoto7 ай бұрын
Hi Mike. I have moved to Pure Raw 3. In addition to the AI model available in V2 they have a new one that works a bit better. Also, you also get the option to apply sharpening corrections, but as you say, you don’t have a lot of control. The workflow is the same. Topaz Photo AI has continue to improve and they do weekly updates. Most of this fix minor bugs, but they also have been improving the various models and adding other functionality. But I still prefer the PureRaw for just removing noise. Feliz Navidad to you and your family.

I note from your PDF workflow chart that you use DxO pure Raw or Topaz Lab Photo AI depending on the focus of your wildlife photo. If I can't afford to buy both plugins, which plugin you prefer, i.e. DxO pure Raw or Topaz Lab Photo AI ?
@PabloGEPhoto7 ай бұрын
My recommendation is Photo Ai due to is versatility to remove noise, correct focus, make images bigger if needed. Photo AI provides updates every Thursday and has been on this pace for over a year since this program was released. Most are bug fixes but they have also updated the various AI models.

another thing to add: Lightroom doesn't process fujifilm RAW images that well for some reason, but if you run your photos through DxO it processes the images in a pleasing way. I almost always run my fuji photos through DxO when editing now and I love it
@PabloGEPhoto7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing that insight. I was not aware of it as I shoot Canon. But I recently bought the OM Systems OM1 and still need to get more editing experience with its RAW files. Hopefully LR process them well but good to know your experience with PureRaw and Fuji files.

5:20 Instead of a new mask to select background, you could click on the subject mask and say “Duplicate and Invert” that will give a perfect background minus the subject.

Good point. What you suggest is a great option and sometimes the best one. It all depends on the photo. I have used your suggestion a number of times. Like selecting the sky and then inverting to end up with a good selection of the foreground. Thanks for watching.

Thanks. I recorded this video some time ago before the new capabilities in PS. But you are right, we now have new options. Let’s just hope that Adobe give us higher resolution options with Generative Fill, but perhaps with the cost of more credits.

I think is is worth it installing PS. Lightroom has been getting better and better, and I go to PS only occasionally now. But there are some things in PS that Lr just does not have, at least today. For example the great Remove tool added recently that is much much better than the heal options in Lr. Also the new generative fill AI great for also removing but also adding or filling canvas (complements Content Aware Fill). And of course with layers you can do other things Singh as focus or exposure blending, etc. I wish Adobe would bring these things to LR. Basically the key photographer friendly tools of PS without all the other tools for graphic artist. Thanks for watching.

Hi Darwin. The lines in the back were not the horizon. They are the edges of a channel of the Chilkat River. Pablo, great presentation on this technique. I have been teaching this technique for several years after being show how to do it by Sean. You covered all the basics very well and gave a good demo with your explanation. I notice you had a little problem with the content ware fill on the right side of your image. That was an excellent try by expanding out the selected area. Not many people would have thought of that. You also might want to select a single area at a time (you can use the lasso too) and run it through the generative fill tool. As long as the area for fill is not longer than 1024 pixels, it should do pretty well for you. Keep up the good work. I enjoyed watching the presentation even though I was already familiar with the process.

Thanks for your comment. I did this video sometime ago. I used to have a bilingual channel with each video done twice, once in English and once in Spanish. A few weeks ago I split that channel and I am now moving still relevant English content to this new channel. The Spanish channel is Pablo GE Foto. I agree with you on the new Generative Fill. Great technology that gives us a new set of options, but with limitations as you described. As least for now, since it looks like Adobe May be giving us higher resolution options based on what they showed at Adobe Max recently. But it may “cost” more credits. Thanks again for your comment.
