That PEDALLING! that ARTICULATION! I believe the defining characteristic of Richter's peformances is it feels like the entire score has a "leggiero" marking, and I love that about it. Most pianists drown all those delicate fast notes in sustain pedal, and to me the delicate fast notes in Rach were made to be heard. Pretty sure Rach himself said so, and you can hear in Rach's own recordings that he uses pedal very judiciously. Richter plays in the spirit of the composer

I think this is one of the best performances of the Miroirs I've ever heard. Richter makes every movement completely haunting and enthralling. Incredible pianissimos. Une Barque is very fast, but I loved it, the fluidity gives more of a sense of being tossed on stormy waves than conventional interpreations do, imo. When Alborada del Gracioso started I literally thought it was a guitar for a second, the shift in tone is incredible. Got a real twang to it, as it should. The timestamp for Alborada in the description is wrong btw, it should be 14:00

One of my first words, I am told, was "Panna!" (Piano). the first record I remember hearing was Rudolf Firkusny's "Moonlight" around 1954. My birthmother was a concert pianist and evidently played while carrying me. This piece is the theme of my life.

A la fois profondément humain mais aussi hautement métaphysique. Unique. Il n'y aura probablement jamais 2 Richter.

Reminds me so much of the music my mom used to play for the Church of Christian Science in Haddonfield, NJ. They loved her, they would stay after services to hear her play. She never retired at 79, she just took a break and then was gone. It's been 15 years and i still miss her. Thank you for this video!

I have always wondered about the constant subdivision of the beat with repeated notes in the first movement of this piece. Firkusny unabashedly brings them to prominence.

The recording is from Prague, June 2, 1975. Richter at his peak, in the raging with enthusiasm concert hall of the Rudolfinum. As someone noted here, Prague was probably Richter's favourite place. Perhaps because he first came here abroad in the spring of 1950 (shortly before his concert here he also gave a concert in the spa town of Teplice, perhaps in memory of Beethoven). And he also recorded what is probably his best version of Schubert's Sonata in B flat major in Prague in September 1972. Unfortunately I missed that concert... So this Hammerklavier was my first live encounter with him. The Rudolfinum was abuzz, everyone felt that this was an exceptional, climactic experience. Also, it was at the end of the annual Prague Spring music festival. In the first part, Sviatoslav played Beethoven's 3rd Sonata in a thrilling way and a selection from Bagatelles. And then came Hammeclavier IN ALL ITS WONDERFUL GLORY (as Jonathan Kerr-Sheppard described Richter's performance of this sonata a few days later in the chapel of King's College, Cambridge.) As an encore, Richter repeated the last movement, and then a short sad piece I didn't know at the time. I later learned that it was Wagner's Schmachtend. The composition of the program very well thought out!
