how interesting, was unaware. it all rings familiar somehow. kinda reminds me of the old British show the Prisoner, a covert character finding himself held in a special quarantine island and he's unsure why and unaccepting of it. it reminds me of other films where a cop or detective makes an involuntary one way trip to some island he's sent to investigate. I wonder if there are interplanetary or interdimensional spies. I guess if earth angels actually exist, that would be their purpose, to test the people. reminds me of a song...the firewatcher's daughter

Yes, as I've been reading the George Smiley novels, I've noticed that they do often feel a touch familiar. Must be all those spy shows I watched on TV in the 80s as a kid...perhaps the creators were cribbing from John Le Carre once and a while?

I'd love to do that for you, but honestly I only own the original 4 prestige issues and the original trade paperback version. There have been some stunning hardback versions released over the years, but I'm also unclear on which version of DKR is the best. I do know that I'd be hunting for one that doesn't overdo it on the extras. Those four-issue series don't come out great with a bunch of extras - when the bonus content fills half the book, I hate that the story pages don't lay nicely. Kingdom Come is a great example - when they publish it with all the extras in the Deluxe or Absolute versions, it sort of spoils my reading experience of the comic itself with all that junk at the back. In my humble little opinion, the extras should only comprise 10% of the whole book.

I can't upgrade all of my favorite novels to Folio Society editions for two reasons. The first reason is that not all of my favorites are published by Folio. The second reason is that with many of my favorite books, I prefer other editions and my space is limited, so I'm not going to own multiple copies of the same novel. For example, my top five favorite novels are: The Time Machine, The Road by Cormac McCarthy, 1984, Moby Dk or The Whale (misspelled to keep yt from blocking my comment), and Dani Noir by Nova Ren Suma. Of those, Dani Doir never has and never will get a Folio Society edition. While I chose Folio for 1984, and will probably go with Folio for The Road, I chose the Easton Press for Moby Dk. I just felt like the leather over wood with the silk end pages was more appropriate for Moby. I also plan on upgrading my copy of The Time Machine with the Easton Press. Among some of my other favorite books, I'll probably upgrade Jurassic Park and The Lost World through Folio Society, and I recently ordered The Neverending Story from Folio (it hasn't arrived yet). Another exception is A Christmas Carol. Because I prefer the replica of its very first printing, I won't upgrade with either Folio or Easton. On another note, I recently heard about the Limited Edition Club, where you buy real first editions. I haven't checked them out yet, but I plan to. Though I probably can't afford to buy anything from Limited Edition Club. 😢
@Upgradeyourbooks
@Upgradeyourbooks Ай бұрын
I like the idea of hunting the best edition of your favourites, without paying too much attention to the publisher. Get that 'forever edition' locked in, and move on! I have The Road from Folio, and it is nice, but there is also room for improvement. It was the first McCarthy from the artist, and he seems to get better with each additional release. They just did Pretty Horses and it is stunning. If I could afford it, I'd go Suntup for The Road, and I've been hunting Moby from folio for years with no luck - maybe I'd better have a look for that Easton Press edition you mentioned!
@KlingonCaptain
@KlingonCaptain Ай бұрын
@Upgradeyourbooks Since my first comment, I discovered AbeBooks. I wound up buying a book that I wasn't planning to. I found a mint condition 2003 Folio Society edition of "A Christmas Carol" for only $28. I didn't really feel that I could pass it up. It's the older blue-green version with the gold lettering on the cover. It has a larger font that makes it easier to read out loud. It's given me an idea. I'm thinking about buying maybe ten more copies of the red facsimile edition and planning a Christmas Carol reading party for next year. The facsimiles can be found for between $8 to $12 dollars depending on what time of year it is. As for my Easton Press edition of Moby Dk. The one they have now looks exactly like mine, and it's only $74.95 right now (normally $89.90), but I can't vouche for the quality since I bought my copy 19 years ago when we were expecting our daughter. It's been through a lot and has held up remarkably well. There are some minor scuffs on it, but it still looks practically brand new, but I don't know if the materials on the current copies are still the same. A lot can change in 19 years. For example, that unborn daughter of mine is now an 18 year old woman. 🤣

Thank you for the kind words and support. I really do try to look at the books in a methodical and systematic way - I'm actually borrowing from action figure reviews, believe it or not! The interest for me comes from the variations within that structure. I'm glad to know that how I'm doing it is 'working' for viewers like yourself.

@Upgradeyourbooks
@Upgradeyourbooks 7 ай бұрын
You’re welcome! And you’re right - the changes are minimal and (in my opinion) almost always for the better. The colour is tightened up throughout so there is no missed sections, which only occurred in the original due to technology and time constraints. Beyond that a few of the harsh pinks, purples, and greens have been toned down to more subdued hues. Unlike so many other classic comic book recolours, I’d call this one both “thoughtful” and “conservative”. That’s the most respectful and appropriate way to do it!

I did indeed fumbled the names! I tried to be mindful of this in my recent Dune Messiah video, but I messed up a few of them too. "Tleilaxu" still gives me nightmares!

@@UpgradeyourbooksAs far as I've heard, I think its pronounced "Lie-lax-oo". Take that with a grain of salt haha

@@oilyboy7243 Nothing like ‘official’ pronunciation on fictional/fantasy terms! Thank you though - Lielaxoo is much easier to say than the way I was imagining it was said!

@Upgradeyourbooks points for you, friend, that you actually read it first! My pronunciation I was lucky to get was from the film/s, so you're no slouch or johnny come lately but actually reading the books, not that others aren't reading the books. Just me, I gotta catch up! It's all good! 📖 📚 🏜 🗡
