Elongated torts are so great I wish I had one or two. Right now I’m concentrating on the Eastern Hermanns breeding. But I may expand if the right opportunity arises

Firstly Redfoots Rule!! 😊 My question is though I have never done it. Would a captive bred Elongated potentially be dangerous to be kept along side Reds that were also captive born. Both being checked out for health prior? Just a thought. Also I personally money or no wouldn't get a tortoise that's so big I couldn't physically move it in an emergency. If I had a staff working round the clock maybe 🤔 . I would go for a Gopher tortoise if I were allowed to get any Tort. Or Burmese Mountain Tortoise are sweet. Great Video as always Jon

@4quall co- habing two different species of tortoises isn't worth the risk. Theoretically, yeah, it should be okay. Also yes unlimited money = unlimited resources so I could have special equipment for any situation 😀

great topic - elongated tortoises are amazing, definitely agree that they're underrated. I have three, one is 5 yo and the other two are 4. I got two of them from Kenan and the other from a gent in Arizona. You're not wrong when you note that it's tough to keep them humid enough in an air conditioned house - mine are in custom built enclosures with a mistking and it required some tweaking for my environment to get it so that they're humid enough but not so much so that the enclosures are wet inside all the time - otherwise they can't find dry areas when they want to. They're much more active and happy when the heat and humidity are right. One thing to check on is which Mazuri to give them - I feed these guys the regular Mazuri, not LS. I believe the LS is better for grassland species like sulcata, russian, etc - tortoises who would mostly graze on grasses in the wild or that will eat hay. I think it's a good thing to feed in addition to greens and veg and they love it. Unfortunately I don't believe they make it in the small pellets like the LS version.

I just found this video and it’s great to see the costs. I’m waiting on a Russian Tortoise that’s not a hatchling, so some of the setup is a tad different from hatchlings. I had shopped for the habitat and decided on the Aivituvin. Happy to see it’s the one you’d recommended. I’d also decided that having two bracketed together will be more spacious for a more mature tortoise. There may need some modification to the second unit since I don’t think the tortoise needs two hide spaces. One thing I noticed that’s missing in your habitat expense is the shipping cost. As of today it is an additional $60, which brings the total back up to the retail cost on the Aivituvin website, although there is free shipping there. I happened to find a second listing on Amazon for the same unit, but this one is at the full retail price with free shipping and a $20 coupon which makes this option the best for total cost.

First off congratulations on picking the Russian tortoise!! They are so cool probably one of the must underrated tortoise species in the world. As for shipping yes it was free shipping but if it dose have a shipping costs i wouldn't konw how much that is because it changes depending on where you live and of course taxes as well, but it was pretty close to give you an idea how much you are going to need to spend to get started. If you have any questions about your new russian tortoise please feel free to ask and maybe it will be on the under the shell segment!

@nlitch 2 ай бұрын
@@Thirdcoastreptile After having looked into the costs for the Aivituvin habitat, I had expected free shipping going through Amazon. Then I noticed the $60 shipping notation where it usually says Free. Gulp. As one who reads reviews and does quite a bit of preplanning before making significant purchases, I always scour the various options before making a final decision. So when you posted the screenshot of the Amazon listing in this video my ears perked up when you didn't add or mention shipping. I saw in the screenshot a $55 charge for shipping, which pretty much agrees with the current charges that the price is 1/2 of retail, but the shipping charge makes up the other 1/2. As I have a Prime account, I never considered that depending on location the shipping might be different if that item happens to have a shipping charge. Luckily I live where there aren't additional taxes. That would definitely be something I'd have to get used to. Regarding the Russian tortoise I'm waiting on, a week ago husband came home to find one clear up our asphalt drive near my garage door (the furthest one of three garage doors and with an incline to boot!). We had no clue where it came from or even what it was until I had my iPhone help identify it as an Afghan tortoise. We put it out of harms way and I gave it some red leaf lettuce and offered a small piece of cut apple without even knowing what they ate, but had available in the refrigerator. They had a few bites of apple (good thing that wasn't the only thing I gave it!), but chowed down the lettuce. Husband wanted me to let it be and I thought somebody with more experience with reptiles might be better equipped to care for it. I called a local pet store hoping to find someone who spoke 'reptile' to help me. After the shop closed the employee had space in their home to quarantine and bring it back to health, as well as list it in the local Lost & Found Pets Facebook site and their shop's FB page. State law requires lost pets to be held 30 days before rehoming them unless the owner relinquishes their responsibility and signs a form stating this. There's no telling where this one came from. No one has posted anything saying they lost their pet. It's estimated to be about 5-6 years old and was very dehydrated and thin. I was told its shell hasn't been given the proper UVA or UVB light source or enough space for its shell to achieve a normal shape. I'm first on the list to get it if the owner doesn't show up with proper ownership identification and proof of habitat. Given what my gut is telling me they either don't care or haven't noticed it's missing and probably won't come forward in that 30-day window. They don't deserve to have this sweet thing. So I have been reading up on them, checking out where I would have their indoor living quarters and think they will have plenty of places to roam in my garden while I'm outside working in it. The yard is terraced with stairs they can't climb and the lower yard is entirely fenced with brick and gravel 1" below the wooden 6' fence so this little burrowing critter can't escape! I'm getting health updates on the critter and it looks promising that there aren't anything that requires veterinary help at this time. Fingers crossed for the 30-days to pass with good news.

Also if you want some ideas dig some deep valleys and pile the dirt in mounds so a hilly terrain. In addition to the fact that they will be sight barriers they also give those little legs a work out going up and down and all about will guarantee a strong adult.
