Thanks for the video. Here's the problem I'm having. I also have an Arturia mk3 essential 88. Midi control centre I set CC commands to control an external synth (DSI Tetra multitembral) in Logic. Maybe I need to change something in Logic itself? The problem is that the fader or knob, if it has a CC number of 20, 24 or whatever, is simultaneously changing the parameters of the external synth and controlling Logic Pro at the same moment. I start turning a knob on the midi keyboard and at the same time I'm triggering some parameter on the synthesiser and the same knob is changing the parameters of the DAW - Logic Pro. That is, I turn the parameter knob on the midi keyboard, changing the sound parameters on the external synth, and at the same time the playback slider in Logic starts rotating back and forth. It looks like there are duplicate CC commands or numbers. Thanks and all the best.

LOL what a brilliant solution! so in order to get the PAT (which is there almost in all MOTIF series sound engines as well) we spend couple thousand more to get it working! That said, I haven't seen a single PAT included performance that doesn't look and sound stupid. Show me an impressive performance and task that can be done with PAT and I'll all the credits to you. Not just its is almost impossible to use, it isn't really needed. PAT was nothing more than a gimmick for Yamaha to jack up the prices.

@trstack5 күн бұрын
@@KierDarby For me, those are non-issues as I only play in my home office/studio. The M8x is my only keyboard controller and I have plenty of software synths plus Logic to do what I need. My most recent setup was based on the RD-2000 and a few different hardware synths (Hydrasynth Deluxe, Fantom 08) and I found I spent more time screwing around than playing/creating. The M8x has changed that for me. Your mileage may vary. Playing live all the way back in 80’s with a non-MIDI Oberheim Modular 8 voice was interesting. My method to hold a note was a #2 pencil. The Yamaha KX-88 and Roland D-50 soon followed. Then a series of workstations. While there are alway improvements to be made, I’m very satisfied with M8x. @KierDarby6 күн бұрын
For the most part, things are the same in Cubase, except you need to have a separate MIDI track to manage sysex data, last time I checked at least. If you want to use USB and DIN MIDI ports in a live setting, you need to to use MIDI tracks in your DAW (or any other MIDI routing software) to transmit data from Port 1 (USB) to Port 3 (DIN) - once you have done that, you can use both ports in a live setting - but without software to route the signals, the Montage family cannot directly address the DIN MIDI ports while the system is in USB MIDI mode. Check out 46:50 for a demo of this.

Thanks for the vid. Super nostaligic for me, as we had the same keyboard in the 80s. Then, a few years later, Dad swapped it for the PSS-780, with the colour drum pads, and different demo song. There was something very unique about cheaper synths back then. Newer stuff just isn't the same.
@KierDarby6 күн бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it. From a MIDI perspective, the 780 is a real pain, as Yamaha renumbered the 680’s voices so they sit in categories, but when selecting them with MIDI Program Change, they actually use the numbers from the 680, rather than what’s printed on the panel of the 780!

One more thing I'd like to add about the 8x4 button grid... In 'Live Set' mode on the original Montage, the 4x4 grid on the left would select any of the 16 Performances within a Live Set Page, while the 4x4 grid on the right allowed you to jump to any of the 16 Live Set Pages within a User Bank. This proved to be invaluable to live musicians like myself who could call out any patch within that bank with seamless sound switching. If anyone knows a solution/workaround other than spamming the page up and down buttons, do let me know! Cheers.
@KierDarby8 күн бұрын
Win some, lose some. The MONTAGE M has one advantage over the classic in that the dedicated 4 x 4 grid can continue to show the live set layout even when playing a performance, removing the need to switch to live set view to load a new performance, but losing the ability to switch the page with a single click, as you say. As far as I am aware, there is no way to do this now.

Thanks for this excellent video! (Being an IT guy myself) I never thought that there is anyone else in the world who analizes user interface at this level and with such perfection! As an ex-Fantom owner, I can confirm all the facts of this video. I wonder why the manufacturers do not use feedbacks and resources like this in the UI development. It wouldn't be so hard to get rid of the weaknesses and get closer to a perfect UI. I am not sure if you mentioned that the black and red boxes diplayed on the Fantom screen block/freeze the rest of the touchscreen, so if you are about to set anything on the screen and move a real-time synth controller, all you can do is to wait until that boxes disappear. Working with seq - which intended to be a fast real-time tool to build-up patterns and songs, these boxes also interrupt the process. It was so annoying, these boxes played a big part in the decision for me to sell my Fantom.
@KierDarby10 күн бұрын
Wow, I haven’t noticed the modality of the on-screen red boxes but now that you’ve pointed it out I can’t unsee it! Glad you liked the analysis - as an interface designer myself, I find so many design decisions in synthesizers frustrating and nonsensical, and Yamaha is not excused here, but from the perspective of an overall concept for an instrument, Montage has the edge over the “box of bits” Fantom approach :)
@parkmedia10 күн бұрын
@@KierDarby The biggest part of the problem is that there is no parameter in system settings to get rid of these boxes.
@KierDarby10 күн бұрын
I actually like the boxes, as it can sometimes be non-obvious what parameter you are actually editing when working with a multi-zone scene, but the fact that they are modal (blocks other input) is a real downer.

@@KierDarby It could be somewhere off-center of the screen. In the top row for example. An excellent video, one of the best in terms of explanation. Although it was still not clear to me how the Montage synthesis is, in the Fantom each zone or tone consists of 3 to 4 partials, which can be modified in the same tone occupying only 1 zone of the 16 available in a scene. So in the Montage M, how many AWM2 or FM or ANx elements can be modified in a single part of a performance or can that be done?
@KierDarby12 күн бұрын
For Montage, 8 AWM elements or 8 FM operators per part, for Montage M it’s 128 AWM elements, 8 FM operators or 3 oscillators plus noise for AN-X parts - and sixteen of any of these parts for any performance.
@DcmIn00112 күн бұрын
@@KierDarbyAh, okay, perfect. I have the Roland FA and I've also had the Roland Fantom 7 for two years, and I just bought the Montage M (still on its way to shipping) and I don't know anything about Yamaha synthesis in terms of editing. @KierDarby10 күн бұрын
The Montage M does address some of the shortcomings of the original by enabling the under-display knobs to edit multiple parameters simultaneously, which makes things feel more responsive and immediate, but the lack of drag gestures on the Montage screen, seven years after the debut of the original is pretty poor. My Waldorf Quantum has drag support that puts the Fantom to shame and makes the Montage look ridiculous - but I’d still rather have a Montage if I could only have one synth.

Thank you for the video. It's very helpful. I've got 4 hardware analogue synths (Prophet 10, OB-X8, Polybrute and Subsequent 37) a computer and a ton of software. I do most with my software, but try to implement the analogue synths as much as I can. I thought about getting a digital synth with 88 fully weighted keys, so the Montage (M)8(x) and Fantom EX were on my radar. I don't feel like spending too much on digital synths, because I feel like they will get outdated sooner than analogue synths and you can't do much with it that you can't do more conveniently with software. I already own a MODX, because I thought I needed an additional synth for live performance that can play sampled instruments. It turned out I never perform live, so I hardly touched the MODX. Since I already have all of the Montage sounds in the MODX, I thought about getting the Fantom EX instead. It's also much cheaper and the ACB synths in there sound much better than the ZEN-core you can find on the old Fantom and Roland Cloud. Your video changed my mind. The Montage M8x is very expensive and difficult to come by where I live though. The old Montage 8 costs less than halve the price (I've seen them go for as little as €2100,-, second hand) but it's already outdated. Maybe I don't need either. I'll hold off for now.
@KierDarby17 күн бұрын
In your case, I’d look at getting a high end MIDI controller with aftertouch to really unlock the capabilities you already have with the MODX and software instruments. The Native Instruments Kontrol S88 (Mk2 or MK3) would be a good fit.
@SourJovis4 күн бұрын
@@KierDarby Thanks for the suggestion. I already have a NI Kontrol S61 Mk2. It's good. like the Fatar keybed on it, but I prefer the feel of the OB-X8 and Prophet-10 even though they're the same Fatar keys. I think the main reason is because of the lightweight plastic housing of the Kontrol vs the aluminum/wood housing and heavier weight of the 2 synths. The Mk2 is getting a bit outdated, because it doesn't support the features of the Mk3, but the Mk3 will become outdated, as soon as NI releases the Mk4. This is why I haven't upgraded to the S88 Mk3 yet. I'm fine not getting anything new at the moment. In a few years aither all of this will be cheaper, or there will be something newer and fancier available. No hurries.

So I'm taking it you could still have one part as an internal sound and one part as and external part layered across the same key zone? Surely this is better as you can then set different volume levels etc for the different parts? By this I mean that if you tweaked the volume of the internal part then MIDI would send the volume level for that internal part out to the external bit of gear which may not be right for the external sound?
@KierDarby18 күн бұрын
Yes, you can do that with Montage, MODX and Montage M very easily. The difference is that while Montage and MODX allow you to have both the internal tone generator AND an external synth in the same part if you wish, the flexibility to do so is somewhat reduced with Montage M.

Is it just me or the OG montage sounds fuller in many of the presets. The Montage M is more sterile, but the original has some organic-ness to it. I've heard they've upsampled the existing samples, this could be the reason for the sterilized sound, as I don't think it's possible to get HD sounds out of standard definition sounds.
@KierDarby23 күн бұрын
To be honest, on the full quality recordings I really can’t hear any appreciable difference between the two when they are playing identical performances. There are times where the performances are subtly different because of the changes in the architecture of the new version, but when playing things that are identical, they sound the same to me. That’s not to say that the Montage M doesn’t sound amazing, but rather that the OG already sounded fantastic.

@KierDarby thanks for the reply 🙏🏼. I'm surprised that there is no audible difference when listening to the original audio file, thanks for clarifying that. But sadly, I've heard this in other videos too :( there have been videos where they audition every preset, and the ones belonging to "Motif XF" category sound noticeably thinner compared to the presets which belong to "montage" or "montage M" category. I know what people say about youtube compression, but tbh, isn't every synth demo already on youtube? And many of them sound sublime, like Korg Multipoly and arturia polybrute.
@shehzadamurthy198323 күн бұрын
But tbh I really love the new montage M's UI. It looks so much more accessible and fun to use. Endless encoders, dual screens, so many ways to modulate and poly aftertouch. It looks like a dream keyboard imo. Just wondering, how are the Motif XF sounds in the Montage M? Do they sound as good as they did in the OG motif XF? I'm a huge sucker for these old sounds, it would be one of the big reasons I would love to get a Montage M. Because on paper it carries the heritage of the motif series and brings new things like ANX and FMX (from the OG montage)..so it's super tempting.

Yes, but the sequencer is based on real-time recording and punch-in editing, rather than providing a piano roll or similar editing interface. Montage M doesn’t have a specific facility for vocals, but it can play a backing track along with your performance, which could be a recording of vocals. This is all possible without a computer, but Montage is more of a live sound engine, and the things you are describing are much better handled with a DAW.

Montage M does have a sequencer, but it is based around real time recording and punch-in editing, rather than offering any sort of piano roll or step editing interface. I hate to rain on your parade, but the solution you present is a costly one. Most musicians, including keyboardists, want an all-in-one solution for their playing needs. The reason I suspect Yamaha didn't include poly aftertouch on Montage M6/M7 was a time constraint to release the new Montage M series at the time they did, probably because other keyboard manufacturers were releasing new synthesizer/keyboard products, some with poly aftertouch. Yamaha didn't want to be too far behind the curve, or they may have lost much valued market share. After releasing the Montage M series, Yamaha mostly focused on the M8x with poly aftertouch in their demos of the Montage M. Another possible reason is perhaps Yamaha had submitted a patent for implementing poly aftertouch in a semi-weighted form factor (without GEX technology) but hadn't received approval from the Patent Office at the time they released the Montage M series. ASM Ashun Sound Machines released the Hydrosynth Deluxe keyboard with poly aftertouch and patented the process they use for poly AT. I suspect Yamaha is trying to do the same thing. I found one patent submitted by Yamaha that was just approved on July 16, 2024. Of course, the Montage M series was released on October 10, 2023. It's patent number: 12039994. From what I can decipher, it might refer to a method of triggering poly aftertouch on semi-weighted keybeds like the FSX keybed on the current Montage M6/M7. But it's just speculation on my part. I think Yamaha will eventually release poly-AT in a semi-weighted form factor, but we might have to wait until a successor to the Montage M is released, perhaps by 2028.

There’s really no parade upon which to rain. While Yamaha may well release a PAT-capable semi weighted keybed in the coming years, that doesn’t help existing M6 and M7 owners to make the most of their instruments today. Adding a PAT controller is never going to be very inexpensive, and I’m not suggesting that anyone go out and buy a Quantum solely for use as a MIDI controller, but Montage owners have already demonstrated their ability to significantly invest in their equipment, and adding something like the Kontrol S or Seaboard Block to their setup in order to enable far greater expression for PAT-enabled parts does not represent a massive extra cost by comparison.
