Thank you for sharing your fishing video. I have dreamed of fishing such waters my entire life. Like the fact you chose to go back to such vintage equipment. I have a few vintage casting reels I like to use for bass fishing. Breaks out old memories. Love to turn on the clicker like we used to do in the old days. 😊

I haven't seen one of those in a long, long time. That and the one with the popper face. I remember first seeing them in Field and Stream magazine back in the 90s as a young fisherman. Well done.

S, it is so much fun seeing your growth and expertise in fly tying and guiding. Your beautiful bride and child gives you the complete perfect lifestyle. I spent time with Tom Travis today discussing flymphs and soft hackles and decided to watch your presentation. Great job and look forward to seeing you on the spring creeks and fly shows. Cheers, Jack

Jack, I couldn’t catch up with you this summer while you were fishing creeks. I’ve been busy for float trips on the Yellowstone through July and on the Bighorn around the first weekend of August. Bighorn is superb!! With carpet of PMD hatches entire river!! Plus black caddis. I got back to DePuy’s yesterday and now I was fishing for tiny summer midges. Hope to see you, will you come back in the fall? If not, expos in spring!!

Not an easy tie but easier than Dave Whitlock’s Hopper. Nicely tied, sir. In his last years, Jack often fished this from a float tube at a fly fishing club that had its own pond filled with bass & trout. Thank you for sharing this.

My compliments on a very nice tie. Jack loved using peacock. S I don’t know if it’s too late for you to see questions or comment after the video was posted so long ago. In case you see this, I am wondering what led you to post tributes to Jack Gartside. Did you know him? I knew Jack because he was a member of the same fly tying club & was privileged to take classes with him when I was a new fly tyer. He was one of the most creative & interesting people whom I have met.

Hi thanks for leaving many comments with kind words. I only know Jack from internet and articles (I happen to own one of his books and a streamer tied by him). Matter of fact I recall it was just about his passing. I’ve been attracted by his creativity, unique designs, and humor for his flies and background stories. Also the independence. I even did a tying workshop with his Pheasant Hopper as it contains so many elements and techniques and it’s the antithesis of modern foam hopper!!

@@SatoshiYamamotoLeftyAngler I hope you will continue your tribute series for Jack & his flies. I think he would have found your tying videos capture the technique & spirit of his flies. It’s wonderful that you are helping to keep his memory & flies current. Jack was open & friendly with everyone serious about fly fishing & tying. He was pretty down to earth & while not expecting praise or adoration, he would probably chuckle & embrace the possibility of selling more flies or his books. I wasn’t close to him but did start out taking his classes & then saw & talked with him at our monthly club meetings & gave him an occasional ride home from conferences. He was a wonderful storyteller & could keep people entertained for hours. His passing is a real loss on many levels.

I like the body on the sparrow that you tied! Didn't think of using chenille for a body!
@SatoshiYamamotoLeftyAngler
@SatoshiYamamotoLeftyAngler 3 жыл бұрын
Brindle chenille is used a lot for stonefly nymphs, which are plenty in streams around here. This orange x black would represent salmon fly nymphs or drowned adults. And I believe the original Sparrow would have represented them primarily as well as the reason for success.

Very nice fly, I really like the idea of using turkey biot. I was wondering, is the biot add some floatation?
@SatoshiYamamotoLeftyAngler
@SatoshiYamamotoLeftyAngler 4 жыл бұрын
Turkey Biot creates realistic abdomen, much better than dubbing plus ribbing materials in my opinion and experience. TB can be fragile but if you add tiny bit of cement before wrapping, it'll last much longer. I'm thinking to do & post TB wrapping video soon.

I like to Fish these or regular royal wulffs when fishing only a dry, if I use a dropper I like to switch to a royal trude. I still use calf hair, not tail though, its harder to work with, but it seems to be easier to see on the water. I had forgotten how to attach the hackle on a parachute since I havent tied for several years and found your video. Good work.
@woodsperson8078
@woodsperson8078 5 жыл бұрын
I think the wulff catskill is easier to see, but the parachute floats better (more naturally) and more effective, tying a well balanced catskill style dry can be tough.

Twenty years ago if I tied at a fly tying gathering/show an all-synthetic material fly, I was the subject of scoffing and mild derision. Now with the pros using more and more synthetics it has become mainstream. This is a huge change in attitude!!! Thank you Satoshi for posting this video.

Nice looking emerger! Never tried it yet, but it could be possible a dab of UV resin onto the thorax while pushing down on the deer or elk hair just in front of it then hitting it with the light might get you that sexy looking thumb down wing without the need for thread wraps. The CDC looks great though!

Feathers MC (you can easily find the website) sells twisted silk gut that is ready to use. Since I published this video, I saw Spanish silk leaders (shown in this video) available online for the next year or two but nowadays they seem to be very scarce to none. This process was one of side projects when dealing with Atlantic salmon flies and, done right, it was very satisfying. I like the blue stains that looks like old & authentic. Now I but whatever available. My flies can be seen from my fly catalog = leftytyer (dot) blogspot (dot) com and click page tabs on top (rest are trout flies). Thank you for your comment and good luck finding guts, then have fun tying!

@@nicholaiandersen7435 The best thing to use (aside from a real gut twister) is a cheapo (at least they used to be, they jacked the price up recently) string maker off Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/Orimupasu-made-string-japan-import/dp/B002KLS2KW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419956039&sr=8-1&keywords=orimupasu I've given up using real gut as old stuff is too brittle - I use clear nylon, light sanded and stained in black coffee - set the twist with a heat gun or the like. The finished result is actually closer to fresh gut than old real gut is. Cheers, Dave Carne
