Lol I don't know why, but the part where she admits that thr hypnosis is bullshit is really angering for me lol. I think it's because I've met people who will go through the song and dance of something that is probably not credible, but will participate in it anyway merely for the sake of appearances, when in actuality it's supposed to be for something really important. I can't stand that shit

Peter Gibbons must be causing trouble for not coming into work over the weekend, sleeping in, ignoring the phone calls from his boss Mr. Bill Lumbergh, not calling and showing up at work
@jamesleopard85187 ай бұрын
What if Peter Gibbons unplugged the telephone and answering the machine while he is sleeping in long, and missed a weekend of work?
@louisbouchard68696 ай бұрын
He did miss a weekend of work. In fact, he went in Monday only to get a phone number and that was when he had his meeting with the Bobs that he chose to attend, giving them the low down on how the company really operated because he did not care at that point and figured he would be laid off anyways (especially after telling them he does only 15 minutes of actual work).

I think this is an existential psychological drama (commentors will probably say, "duh," but it's still interesting to point out...). I think it has meaningful conscious and unconscious elements. The characters are like a part of a single mind but have competing & contradictory values, and perspectives, on what's important to realize, or satisfy, in their existential conflict. In my understanding of Pitch Black, I noticed how the characters of the story are able to best work together by gradually relating what's intrinsically substantial, or satisfactory, about their difficult reality together. They relate to each other and the intrinsic rules and stakes of reality to satisfy a worthwhile end. The character values and dynamics shift with the conflict when their reality becomes more primordial & dire... Their competing moral dilemmas for what's best to do, and how best to do it, and why for..., also change throughout when their purpose stakes become more real to satisfy. Towards the end, I was left with a 'remanence' of which purpose was most satisfying to the story's moral & existential dilemma. Arguably, Carolyn's role proved most valuable to the issue because Riddick, the most self-interested and "animal" of all the parts, is left dissatisfied in the end with his survival, (which is like him because he perpetually has no fix for his pain, such as a purpose beyond himself); Unlike Carolyn who redeems her original purpose for the company's mission - to ensure delivery of all passengers possible to New Mecca. Riddick survives but he is left with a continuation of his mortal suffering as before, but it's perhaps less dire for the moment to understand. He's especially upset with Fry's sacrifice for 'something' or 'someone' like him, but it seems her 'altruism' may have caused a change in his 'survival-at-all-cost' personality, perhaps for his later success throughout the series - his satisfactory success... There's definitely more that could be said about the story, but I just wanted to give a brief & light hypo. - for fun. Thanks for reading!

I feel like the ex-girlfriend was the most unnecessary character in the whole show. She only appears in person in one scene, clearly doesn't like Peter, and her only real plot function is getting him to see the hypnotherapist (which anyone could have done--hell, LUMBERGH could have made him go to the hypnotherapist in the hopes of making him a more content corporate drone, and it would have made Peter seem like even more of a wage slave because his boss was intruding into his personal life). Like, why was she even in the movie? Was it just to prevent him from hooking up with Jennifer Aniston's character right off the bat?

Just asking, is it in your favor to not go to work on your day off even if they told you to go?
@louisbouchard68696 ай бұрын
In the USA, most states are at-will employment states so you can be fired for any reason other than one protected by law (although I am sure SCOTUS is trying to weaken that too). So they can fire you if you do not go in on your day off. Not only that but tech workers are mostly salaried and get the same amount of money regardless of how many hours they put in so many companies use that as a way to get free labor. The one theme in this movie though is that the management does not like confrontation. The whole thing about Milton makes that obvious. That is why Peter is able to get away with the crap he does.
@Voldrim3596 ай бұрын
@@louisbouchard6869 it's that from that year or is something from now?
@louisbouchard68696 ай бұрын
@@Voldrim359 At-will employment started in the 1980s with the Reagan Administration. Salary work has been with us since 1938 and although there have been changes for so called exempt from overtime workers, the income amount has never kept up with inflation. So yes, those 2 things were valid and happening in 1999 when this movie was made.

@@Voldrim359 At the behest of the big business lobby. When the exempt category for salary was set up, it included only 5 classes of workers and a high enough income threshold that it did not apply to most workers. However, changes to the law allowed more workers at a lower income threshold to be classified as exempt. As for at-will employment, again that was part of the blueprint for the Reagan administration (the same group that set up Project 2025) as a way for employers to fire workers easily without the threat of lawsuit. The problem businesses are having now is that many employees have started to use those laws to their advantage.

How did she know he had to work on the weekend or he wasn't at work? My hypothesis is Lumberg called her and asked her why her boyfriend isn't at work that day and asked her to call him. He's the one she is CHEATING on him with.
@louisbouchard68696 ай бұрын
Many companies get emergency contact and so he might have called her as a emergency contact. Another theory is that she tried to call him at work first, knowing he had to be there that weekend, and he did not answer or his coworkers told her that he was not there.
