I appreciate the support 🙏🏼 I’ve been enjoying the 9-5 work lately, but I’m feeling the itch to pick up the camera again 😅 I may have some opportunities coming my way, though. And there’s a solid network of filmmakers not too far from here in Atlanta, so I’m sure things will fall into place.

I definitely agree! I know I jumped the gun when I started my own freelance journey. So for me, the transition back into the 9-5 world is more about taking a step back, figuring out my processes and having a security blanket if I choose to step away again.

Could be two reasons. The card isn’t fast enough or the card is going bad. Are you using the Sandisk Extreme Pro 300 MB v90 II? I had a similar issue with the GH5 years ago. Turns out the SD card wasn’t fast enough for 10 bit 422. It would record for 5 to 10 minutes then stop.
@rivvidproductions
@rivvidproductions 2 ай бұрын
I’m thinking it was the first reason. I went back and looked at my codecs and I think I was filming in Cine 4K 10-bit 422, but I didn’t realize the different aspect ratio would matter that much. I feel like when I’m filming my personal projects I’m usually in 4K, 10-bit 422. And yeah, I think that is the card I’m using. Honestly though, I’m thinking of trying out the OWC or Lexar cards. SanDisk has been kind of letting me down lately!

I’ve heard good things about OWC and Lexar. I don’t think you can go wrong with either. It’s fortunate that we have access to ultra fast media. Unfortunately, it’s not the most exciting purchase after purchasing a camera

I love the sharpness and low light capability of prime lenses. The flexibility of zoom lenses is extremely helpful for run and gun situations. There’s been a few times where I just shot with one prime lens. But that’s usually based on the budget, traveling needs and lightings situation. I like it because all I have to do is focus on framing and the story. Congratulations! Georgia is a beautiful place

Thanks Shaun! We’ve been loving Georgia so far 🙏🏼 And I agree - zooms definitely help when you’re run & gun, especially as a solo creator, and you don’t wanna miss the action. If you focus mostly in manual, they are a luxury. Honestly, they’re just glass. The IRIX Cine Lens are really good, I just wish I didn’t buy so many. Each lens is 3 pounds, plus carrying multiple focal lengths over time can be tiresome.

Lighting and composition takes a bit of time to understand. I had a similar set up when I started. You can achieve a lot of looks with your current set up. Just reduce the ambient light, whether in camera or on location. For more light input, bring the light closer to your subject. But honestly, your work looks good. Great job!

If I have my choice, I love running my Milvus/Otus primes. They are so beautiful and I actually prefer manual focus for 90% of my work. That being said. My 24-105 (now 24-70) and 70-200 do see a lot of work for stuff that I really dont know what Im getting myself into or if the client ask. That happens a good bit where zooms are requested. Love the bumblebees. Something I did recently that has help a lot has been putting some black moleskin from URSA on non-stick side. It just cuts down on rustle just a bit. I can shoot you a picture. GO DAWGS!

I really want to get some cinema primes! These photo lenses aren’t cutting it for me 😅 I’m too reliant on autofocus. Plus I like the image quality I’m seeing from other folks’ cinema lenses. That’s a great point about using a zoom if you don’t know what you’re getting into - I definitely agree with that! And I’ll definitely need to try the moleskin addition in the future. Hey Andrew: Thanks for this helpful video. I am a Panasonic shooter myself (S1 and Original S5. Haven't got the S5 MK II yet, but I have come close many times.). Gotta ask a business question(and I apologize if I have already asked this before). Do you ever feel you miss out on getting jobs because you are shooting with Panasonic instead of Sony? (Or Canon or RED?) It's just that it seems like so many freelancers are using an FX6, or for real lower-budget shoots, a7 IVs. Maybe it doesn't matter, but would love to hear your thoughts. Oh, one more question if I may: How do you deal with the moire? If the autofocus on the S1H were even halfway-decent, I would definitely get one instead an S5 IIX. But I am feeling more and more like I NEED focus as I get older. (Plus my second-shooter-in-training is my teenage son, and not sure how willing he is to learn manual focusing.)
@rivvidproductions
@rivvidproductions 3 ай бұрын
I’m always happy to answer this question! I have never had an issue landing a job solely based on the fact that I shoot Panasonic. If I have lost work because of it, then I likely wasn’t approached in the first place. I see other freelancers using the FX6 or different RED or ARRI cameras and feel like I should also make the investment. But I honestly feel like I know what I’m doing well enough to get great results with the Lumix cameras, and they are much more budget friendly for me at this stage of my life/career. As far as technical issues with moire, I haven’t really noticed any! I’ve had a few issues where the PDAF on the S5II wasn’t as good as I thought it would be, but I chalk that up completely to user error 😅 so now I always double check my focus settings before pressing record. Hope any of this was helpful! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼

Hey what's the V number on your SD Card? I think S5ii's officially support V90's but will still "work" with V30's or V60's. If it is a V90, I'd assume maybe the card is dying. Either way I'd probably replace the card. Also were you dual slot recording? Unsure if that would have avoided this issue but good to know looking forward. Also I'm a NJ videographer looking to colab/trade 2nd shooter jobs, but still working on moving from full time working at ad agency to freelance.

I believe the Extreme Pros are V90s. I could be wrong though… what’s interesting is that is doesn’t have the issue recording at 1080, and I couldn’t replicate the issue after the job, which was bizarre. I don’t dual slot record, but it may be something to consider for future work! And I’m contemplating making the switch from SanDisk fully to Lexar or Angelbird. Honestly it seems like a super versatile piece of film gear you can add to your kit would be a 5-in-1 reflector. It can help diffuse and bounce like and the black side can help cut light to get a more moody dramatic look. If you placed a black side 5-in-1 on the first subjects far side of the face for the interview it would have cut the light that was bouncing off the way and added more contrast to the image. I love using these types of reflectors and they are cheap! At one point I’ll upgrade to silks but they are so versatile and can be held by most light stands since they don’t weigh a bunch!

So funny enough I have the 5-in-1 and I’m fairly certain I brought it with me on this shoot 😅 I need to grab an extra light stand and a clamp or bracket that’s sturdy enough to hold it. Love working with direct clients. So i like to step in man if you don't mind, good read I promise I might have to simply do a video one day. 1. "What lighting is Best lighting?" ... the lighting that works for you 2. "What setups are best" ... the setup you are working with that's making you money like in this video 3. "What composition looks best for each client" ... the one that works for the shot you are achieving. There's no one way street to this, you can't focus on "best" because there is no such thing other than BEST being WHAT WORKS. Don't get caught up in all that camera club stuff my guy. It restricts you from creativity and broadening your wings. More to say it constrains. You'd be surprised what one light can do to a whole scene so having 2-3 of those awesome LED panels just adds to the cause in a positive way. 4. "I'm trying to find my own visual style because marketing agency clients has a very specific style" ... ok so it's not your style beyond that what's the worry? Focus on creativity and define your own style for your own looks yes 100%... but also bare in mind that agencies don't care about style, cinematics and all that youtube jazz you only hear in it. They care about your level of quality, delivery and overall result. THEY will choose the style along with asking you. So don't pivot away, but when you are doing spec work, create different looks within that and remember than not every shoot you do has to have this camera club "rule" that constantly floats groups and videos. There's no rules, just guidelines. In the absolute very end of it all... you got paid and your client was happy right? THAT'S the best you push for.

Tony, I'm not gonna lie. When I started to read your response I was ready to come back hot, but when I got further than two sentences I realized you were coming from a good place. I fully appreciate the time and energy you put into this comment. I 1,000% agree that "best" is subjective and whatever works for certain situations, and that no two situations are virtually identical. I just meant that sometimes, I think I'm making a good choice in the moment, then I review the footage later and I think to myself "Why the hell did you do it like that?!" And I absolutely LOVE my Lumix system and it is what has been working for me - direct client and agency-wise - so I don't necessarily think I feed into the camera club stuff, haha. As far as visual style, I don't sweat the agency stuff because I still learn on those shoots, I'm still presented with challenges, and I'm grateful for all the opportunities that I get. I'm just starting to branch out more with my own clients and I'm getting more freedom to experiment with looks and visual styles. I'd eventually love to have a recognizable style, how some Hollywood directors are recognized, but for now I'm more than happy playing with that stuff from job to job or spec ad to spec ad and seeing what I enjoy creating. Again, I really appreciate the thought you put into this comment - just another reason I've enjoyed sharing my journey on KZbin! The community has been fantastic. I hope you have a blessed day, my friend!

You might want to cap the quantity of working days for that retainer. It could end up being 10 days of 2 hour blocks and obviously that is not worth your time. I would break it up into half days and full days. Bc if you do a 2 hour day it will still take up half your day if not all of it. Your stipulations are very videographer centric when they should be client centric. I recommend keeping a half day/full day limit but adding more language about deliverables. They don’t understand how many hours to purchase bc that’s not what they deal with. They will be able to understand ‘5 videos’ much easier. Congrats on the shelter relationship. That sounds promising!!

Much appreciated on the insight! My initial thought process was that documenting active job sites is fairly run & gun, so it wouldn't require much set up in the way that interviews would. So I could easily get in and out fairly quickly, even if the job is a bigger one. The other side of that coin is this particular client was essentially looking for someone who was "on-call" which I wanted to avoid, but still wanted to offer my time without giving an exact number of days. But I can see where you're coming from, and I much prefer your line of thinking! Just need to refine my process now.

Interesting, always thought upwork was kinda scammy with low ball offers but making the connection with them directly was probably the best decision you could have made, the fact that they are gonna give you for multiple months is crazy could be an awesome long-term partnership and portfolio building experience.

Upwork has definitely been more negative than positive experiences for me. Lots of lowball offers, but this one sounded promising, and thankfully it lucked out! I'll get to start working with them very soon!

Good stuff man! I run a retainer model and it was hard tapping down pricing at first. Also I’m just across the river right above Philly!

Thanks Dave! It’s definitely a challenge, and one I hope to figure out soon. And no way! Would love to connect some time.
