Facing his imminent death soon after, what a tranquil, peaceful and positive outlook on life he created through this masterpiece! And, what a magnificent performance and interpretation on the piece, it is! Maestro! Thank you so much.

I heard him play the Hammerklavier and the Dukas sonatas in Montreal two years ago. Last summer he played both Liszt concertos in one afternoon. Phenomenal musician.

I was there at both events! It was great, even though we got cooked by the sun big time during the Liszt concertos lol

I have listened to this piece many many times...so many that it became old and trite and I listed it as one "I don't want to hear anymore." But from the first few notes of this glorious performance, my ears and mind heard something it has not heard before...there is an intensity (understanding), beauty, and clarity that I've missed in the past! This is truly a great great piece of music written by one of the most talented composers of all time. And, dare I say, this is the premier performance of it, for all time! To call it less than any other piano piece, as I have, is a mistake. I remember someone once said to me, we play Mozart as children and think of it as simple and "easy" then we return to it later in life to finally MAYBE understand the genius of it. So, I think, perhaps it is with Schubert. "LISTEN!" I say to myself, for here is utter beauty and genius of a higher level. Here I think I may find, if I really listen, the power to lift my life to a better happier place! I find myself giving myself further counsel...do not discount Hamlin or Schubert, for you do so at your own idiocy! Some hear sorrow (minor passages?), some joy (all the rest?), some both. I'm not sure I can define it either way... for as with life itself, I only know it is a great blessing from the gods! Indeed, I am blessed among all humans to be alive, now on this day, to know this great bliss! Heartfelt thanks many times over dear dear Mr. Hamelin! And Schubert! I'm a better man for your gifts and blessings!

We are blessed that we can listen to Schubert's music at any time we want with the click of a button. A luxury that generations before us did not have.

For long time my favorite recording of D.960 have been the one by Richter. Other recordings, even by Brendel, hurried the first movement, even though the tempo is indicated as _Molto moderato_ - much moderate. Richter is playing it *Molto* _moderato_. I wanted to hear it played with the tempo moderated by a bit of ritenuto, or rubato, holding back. I hear such timing in this performance, though I'm afraid the esteemed maestro Hamelin does it here kind of randomly, not what the music needs. Also voicing sometimes not to my liking.

Alex… I too have listened to Richter and Brendel play this. Richter, notorious for speeding through and Brendel, not to my liking, very dry and boring. We are all entitled to our opinions…art is art and piano performance is no different. I appreciate your comment even though I disagree with some of it. I do not think there is a pianist that has played this or does now play this that is comparable to Hamlin. And my reasons are stated above et, al. clarity, expression, interpretation all of which defendable under the umbrella of artistic expression. Hamlin puts life and love and passion into his playing. And as always, I offer this comment as my opinion.

I neglected to add that you quote the Italian tempo markings as absolutes, my piano teacher said they are very general suggestions with limitation. Of course, adagio is slower than allegro. However, to say it’s molto moderator that is a specific tempo without metronome setting, I think you’re a little off base and forgetting that the pianist is free in his artistic expression to play it the way he thinks best. My final thought is these composers were living breathing human beings. I know that Schubert suffered a great deal in his life and died young. Consequently I do not think performing at a death March tempo is ever justified played like a death march! which makes it very boring. Finally I think a great pianist can make things that are boring exciting and full of life. There are few that accomplished that and I believe Hamlin is at the top of that list.

@ The first time I heard the late Schubert Sonatas was over 35 years ago from a Philips CD by Brendel that I bought. Brendel's rendering never left me and is ingrained in my mind so to speak. Brendel omits a long repeat in the first movement of D.960 which I actually appreciate. Another great recording is by Leif Ove Andsnes. Try it.
