In my opinion, Hamelin is one of the best and leading pianists of our time. His range of literature, which he masters by heart, is enormous. In contrast to many of his colleagues, he does without show effects. His understatement, in which he dispenses with superfluous movements, allows the music to have a better and clearer effect on the listener.

Amazing that Hamelin performs in China and was invited to play there. Things like these are great for international understanding.

1:15:36 I searched on Baidu to know which music he played, and as it turns out, it was a famous song 《鼓浪屿之波》(Waves of Gulangyu), which is related to the place where he had this recital: Gulangyu (鼓浪屿), Xiamen, Fujian, China. 1:19:31 It's Op. 32, No. 12, not No. 10.

Me too!!! I got to play Medtner’s 1st Sonata for him in a masterclass and he told me it had been years since he visited those pieces. But then, of course, when he sits down to play some of it it’s like he was just practicing the piece that morning… it was a wonderful experience

His new recording of the Hammerklavier and 3rd piano sonata, which he played here, is a marvel of *both* musicianship and pianism.

This is fabulous. His performances of the second sonata have always been way too fast in my opinion (it's just way too easy for him). But hearing him now, he really is taking his time and the effect is so much more powerful.

I heard him play the Hammerklavier and the Dukas sonatas in Montreal two years ago. Last summer he played both Liszt concertos in one afternoon. Phenomenal musician.

I was there at both events! It was great, even though we got cooked by the sun big time during the Liszt concertos lol
