Hi, what's the difference between Otis 300VFE and Otis 2000VF? I'm kinda curious
@TheDragonFire123Күн бұрын
2000 VF is a European product and generally didn't make it to our market; actual examples are clearly marked. This would be more likely a Concept 200, but the title won't be changed for historical reasons. Actual mechanical differences between 2000 VF, 300VFE and Concept 200 are not known for sure, but the former two sound similar to each other.

These NCQ 7200.7s are the Puma platform (it's ironic how Seagate moved away from the snow theme right when they took power efficiency seriously by switching to buck converters, although in any case Alpine *is* implied to have a direct developmental descendant in Blizzard), by the way (despite the HDA still being labeled as ALPINE). Most of my own *are* healthy, although the non-NCQ models and precursors - Aspen (Barracuda ATA III), Snowmass (Barracuda ATA IV), Avalanche (Barracuda ATA V) and Alpine (other 7200.7s) - often got *very* hot indeed (easily up to the mid-60s of °C, in the underventilated consumer shitboxes); still, those with Agere MCUs and the Texas Instruments SH6950 survive the heat (and humidity for that matter) better than any other drive I've known, and even after reallocating a modest group of sectors, they often keep going for a while before suffering any further problems…
@longrunner2589 күн бұрын
Sounds like Seagate at least implemented more-aggressive dynamic braking to reduce the wear in this model.
@TheDragonFire1239 күн бұрын
An interesting thing is that this only works when power off is requested; otherwise, the same old contact start stop process applies. This quirk also seems to be shared with Toshiba's enterprise drives too, although no contact dragging there.
@longrunner2589 күн бұрын
At least the start/stop itself sounds normal and smooth again, rather than deliberately roughened as on the old Brinks and Pharaoh (and worst of all, the Maxtor DiamondCrash/MaXCrime drives which started that scam). So I'd bet on these still outsurviving (at least earlier) Pharaoh proper, even if they don't make the full 50,000 cycle standard…
@TheDragonFire123Күн бұрын
It's funnier when they try to rough up the startup of a V11... which don't have contact start-stop. What I wonder though is if these will do better than similar age Bacalls. Of course, there isn't a similar age Bacall, but for transitional 2018 ones... maybe.

Is the main controller chip (the largest 176-pin QFP) from Agere (pretty good) or STMicroelectronics (not so good)? Especially if it's STMicroelectronics (although even Agere can gradually degrade after *this* time, so the NEC read/write channels on Barracuda ATA I/II/III and their preceding 5400rpm Medalists were probably best of all), then its integral read/write channel is probably what's degrading (not the HDA itself), so you can probably revive the drive with a PCB swap (unfortunately you can't interchange Agere with STMicroelectronics given their different electrical characteristics); just make sure to get a *whole* working donor drive (the ST3160827AS/ST3120827AS/ST380817AS PCBs will happily interchange as long as they have the same components and firmware version), as if you naïvely buy a separate PCB its read/write channel is probably just as bad. Quantum's Fireball EL/EX/CR/CX were *quite* the spiritual ancestors to these, in that they are also exceptionally-reliable mechanically, but their read/write channels (Lucent, the precursor to Agere on these) can gradually degrade too; but thankfully they're equally happy with PCB swaps between different capacities (as long as you stay within the same series, of course). They even used motor drivers from one reliable manufacturer (Panasonic) and one dubious (Philips), although at least (unlike the SH6950 and SMOOTH) those had the decency to be pin-compatible. While swapping PCBs you should check the condition of the silver-plated PCB pads (both for the heads and motor) - these can tarnish heavily, so especially if your drive still has a non-RoHS HDA (which you can identify by shiny motor pins, wheras the fully-RoHS production has dull motor pins), it may be worth refinishing them by flowing on SnPb solder, then wicking it flat and thoroughly cleaning the flux (basically a makeshift HASL like on the pre-RoHS models; short of that, you can use an eraser to get the tarnishing off). I've done so on all of my own 7200.7s (except the youngest, fully-RoHS ST340014A).
@TheDragonFire1239 күн бұрын
Unfortunately, this particular one is the STMicroelectronics-based one. It works fine, however; if I implied it wasn't, then I do apologise.
@longrunner2589 күн бұрын
@@TheDragonFire123 Anyway it's particularly displeasing because Seagate's engineers *already* found out that STMicroelectronics wasn't exactly up to making read/write channels - they tried them on the U4/U8/U10 and ultimately concluded that they were too frail even for the U Series, observing that the U5 moved to NEC too (and is indeed the most-reliable of the U Series, despite also being the slowest; the U6 continued with NEC, but skimped on the media protection). Was STMicroelectronics unwilling to lose their share of Seagate's component supply (from their big old BGA controllers without integral read/write channel, on the Barracuda ATA II/III/IV and U5/U6), and did they meddle with Seagate's management? We may never know directly, but I wouldn't put it past STMicroelectronics (they *are* half‑French after all)… So wherever I want *ultimate* reliability, I use those with the Agere+SH6950 combination (although Agere+SMOOTH still beats the converse, IMO); my current S‑tier backup drive is an ST3160827AS with Agere+SH6950. In general I've seen too many STMicroelectronics parts fail where other (actually reputable) manufacturers hold up, so I *never* buy them new (other than direct replacements of something specialized) and I don't even salvage post‑RoHS, non‑specialized parts of theirs. It also seems that IBM already knew to avoid STMicroelectronics, as I've never seen their parts on a Deskstar of the era…
@longrunner2589 күн бұрын
At least (being equipped with proper ramps) it's dying *peacefully* rather than its "consumer" counterparts unrecoverably crashing their heads in the landing zone; with 24,188 start/stops and 17,691 power cycles, Pharaoh would *surely* be as dead as its namesake by then.

Tbh idk why the cab is padded in the left lift whilst the cab isn't padded in the right lift. What does the padding actually do?
@TheDragonFire1239 күн бұрын
@cakeman8406 It's there to reduce the possibility of damage by other items to the lift. Padding is normally used in buildings without a dedicated service lift. Only one is padded because tenants are expected to reject the unpadded one if they need to move stuff around.

These single-platter 250GB 7200.10/DM21 models are the Superhawk platform (Nighthawk was its 160/80GB precursor, with Galaxy for the multi-platter models). 155 reallocations is somewhat higher than commonly found on previous Barracuda generations (usually with no further ill effects as long as it doesn't *continue* growing), but perhaps not totally unreasonable allowing for the higher density (so a same-sized defect would take out more sectors).

An interesting fact is that I later obtained an ST3250310AS; it reports as a NHawk Plus in Victoria 5.37. I suppose both names get the point across well that these drives are an enhanced version of the original.
