Medication effects don't last then you're back at square one, only now you have the journey of getting off them dealing with the side effects of withdrawals..... where i am at, at the moment. They did work initially but i was never happy taking them which will never work lomg term which might be why they didn't work in the long term for me

Worst part about my social anxiety isn’t making friends. At this point, that ain’t even that high on the priority list. The worst part is it inhibiting my development in life and as an independent individual. It makes me heavily struggle with job interviews, phone calls, health appointments, everything like that. For me, these things are most important and avoidance leads to consequences. I guess I’m more concerned about my basic life necessities and financial stability before I can worry much about social life…I really really want to overcome this

I'm glad to hear you want to overcome it. So then ask yourself what are some small changes you can make to do exactly that? Exercise, meditation, visualization, diaphragmatic breathing, posture, facial expression, and more. Good luck.

I am 60 and was finally diagnosed at 50. I now think back and see how it affected my feelings not only as an adult, but also as a child. It wasn’t severe, but it was there, and still is.

Hello. I'm Ariya, from Iran. I have been struggling with social anxiety disorder ever since I was a teenage boy (I'm 25 now). It's made me imprison myself in a prison of my own making. It has literally impaired every aspect of my social life. I want to make friends. I long for human connection. I want to have a normal life and experience the same ordinary things that one should experience in a lifetime. Sadly, I have lost all hope and have grown resentful and bitter (Not even "Man's Search for Meaning" has helped me). Life is already hard and filled with suffering and tragedy. But for socially anxious people, you don't even have the opportunity to enjoy the normal things (marriage, having your own kids, a fulfilling career, to name a few) that make life worth living.

This problem is caused by having a covert emotionally abusive parent who may be charming around others, but behind closed doors they put you down, humiliate you, degrade you, compare you to other kids and tell you all the ways you don’t measure up, criticize everything about your natural and authentic personality, so by the time you are 7 years old you are so ashamed of yourself you feel stifled around others. And since these types of parents are very charming around others, therapists will rarely (if ever) diagnose the real problem (abuse).

My problem is nobody in my country thinks like me and I will be shunned if I speak my true beliefs. For just a random example, I was at work today and colleagues talked about drinking and how even women drink a whole bottle of wine. I wanted to say "I would never marry such a woman" but im sure thats going to really insult many people present. And again, a colleague was telling me something about a famous movie, I said "Im not a movie goer, I dont know it". He seemed bothered by that and we really had nothing to talk about the remainder of the shift. I wish I could just speak truth and say that 99% of movies are an abomination inculcating this generation with a defiled culture. Now paradoxically, that would have made them selectively mute towards me.

I just went in today for treatment. May just be a SSRI but its a start. All I had to do was tell my doctor of how it affected my life and show him my hand trembling out of control 😆.

I was diagosed with this in my late thirties though the symtoms started when I was 14. I'm 60 years old now and while I have a job I've never had a romantic relationship with anyone, much less a family. I've sought help at various points as an adult. While it's felt good to have the support of a trained professional it hasn't done anything to lessen the amount of fear I feel in everyday life situations when I've tried to interact with other people. I suppose, for me at least, it's like a chronic disease lasting from adolecence until old age.
