I am considering getting 1 or 2 beagles to have as family pets (I have two young sons) and for hunting. I've heard you can't really cross them into both worlds --- good family and be a good hunting dog. Would you be willing to have a phone call for me to learn from you? To see what it is like to have beagles be both family dogs and hunting dogs? Thank you.

Question for ya on training I got a 6 month old beagle that is just super obstinate on learning commands (sit , stay , ect) any advice?

I tried to do the whole sit/stay commands but quickly learned it doesn’t come easily to beagles. It’s not what they are bred for. They are bred to focus on a scent and never abandon it. Ignore all distractions other than following a scent. It is their greatest strength as a hunter and their greatest weakness as a house pet 😂. They listen well enough that I never have them on leash and no fence in my yard but they are not winning any awards for sit/stay any time soon😂

pop caps! awesome tip and video! I hunt in England without a gun licence so I use air rifles and slingshots + dogs. Air rifles are practically silent and I bet you can get crazy air calibre out there in America.

Fox hounds will run Rabbits’s, the concern is the fox hounds will catch the rabbits and it won’t be much of a chase.

Step 1 Get new Beagle Step 2 Go hunting. If problems occur with step 2, repeat step 1. Never trained a Beagle to hunt yet!

Where you get the live rabbits from? A breeder, or are there people out there that's so wild rabbits live?

I found a guy selling them about an hour from me listed as “San jaun” rabbits. In Ohio is illegal to use wild rabbits and keep them captive so San Jaun is the next closest thing in size, color, and smell. I think people raise them for food.

Hey bud, I’m Sandusky county area and just got a beagle pup for hunting. Quick question can I use any rabbit for training or does it need to be San Juan or cotton tails? Looking to do the same in my yard

Iv seen people use all kinds of rabbits but the San Jaun is the closest to a cottontail.

I've got a 6yr old dachshund Elkhound mix and a 4.5yr old beagle I'm learning to hunt and get a license because they won't stop chasing rabbits. Never trained them for it, they just hate rabbits livin I guess The beagle is from SW MI and looks a lot like your guys, probably related if you're in nw Ohio. I wish I could replicate the mixed dog. He's a lot like Beagle but calmer and a lot smarter. Still a hound, but just a better dog, same size as a beag

Guy about an hour south, I can’t remember the details but I think he was selling for meat. They were San Juan rabbits.

Both my Beagle Boys are rescues. One from a good breeder in FL that gave him away because he was a runt. Tge other from a shelter were his owner passed away and his pack was given to the shelter.

You should study up on how to train with these. Shocking is not something you should be doing to get your dog to come. You can easily train them to respond reliably to the beep or vibration if your collar allows that. In 7 years of running beagles with these, I've never had to 'shock' my dogs. I reserve that for breaking the dog off trash running or an emergency like stopping it from crossing a busy road while running a rabbit. No doubt, they are essential for any hunter these days. The collars are cheap when you compare it to your investment in your dogs. Btw, you've got some nice beagles there.

I always use the tone first but my males are more stubborn some days. They can also go too far sometimes and I have to act fast before they get in the roads.

How do you get them to come back????? this is our greatest fear. They take off and then will find something else to track as well!

They have a gps tracking collar that i use to track and call them back with a tone or shock if I have to

They are from a breeder in KY. Their bloodline is mainly Greenwells Reggie, and Brent’s Primetime from what I saw those were the names that seem talked about the most and they made up 50% of the bloodline. 300$ each plus delivery.
