My father was a flight surgeon and served in NG at e time the Allies ontrolled the south, and the Japanese the north, and the issue of who would win was very much in doubt. Thatbwas a very different world. Brutal. Deadly.

I came in from Cairns, Queensland on a 50 ft sailboat to Milne Bay Province in 1982. Stayed on sailboat for one month then put my loaded bicycle on the road at Lae. Cycled from Lae to Wau and back to Lae. Then cycled from Lae to Madang. I wanted to cycle from Madang up to Highlands but virtually everyone said that wasn’t a good idea. Left bicycle at Madang and took bus to Mt. Hagen. Walked to the top of PNG at Mt.Wihelm….. then a 2 day hike toward road to Madang. Bused back to Lae….. then flew to Port Moresby. Met the right people and flew to Komodo and hiked the Komodo Track. After 2.5 months in country I flew back to Cairns where Customs looked in every corner of my bicycle and tent and sleeping bag looking for drugs. Beautiful country.
