Living in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

I came in from Cairns, Queensland on a 50 ft sailboat to Milne Bay Province in 1982. Stayed on sailboat for one month then put my loaded bicycle on the road at Lae. Cycled from Lae to Wau and back to Lae. Then cycled from Lae to Madang. I wanted to cycle from Madang up to Highlands but virtually everyone said that wasn’t a good idea. Left bicycle at Madang and took bus to Mt. Hagen. Walked to the top of PNG at Mt.Wihelm….. then a 2 day hike toward road to Madang. Bused back to Lae….. then flew to Port Moresby. Met the right people and flew to Komodo and hiked the Komodo Track. After 2.5 months in country I flew back to Cairns where Customs looked in every corner of my bicycle and tent and sleeping bag looking for drugs. Beautiful country.

I lived in Port Moresby in the early 1970's before independence. It was such a great place to live - loved every minute of it. It has changed in 50 years. Had the best life there.

That’s so good to hear! I went back again for four months after I made this video, and I really fell in love with the country. There’s such gorgeous nature, adventure, and super fun and kind people. It sounds like you made some great memories there, too :).

I lived in bulolo 49 years ago stayed in port more by quite often, I loved png I still have my mum's burka basket she bought when we first moved there loved the people loved the country

Love the place. Our house never had a fence. Actuall, it was the Minister of Parliament next door who erected a fence and had noisey dogs. Go figure ? I can't wait to return someday. I'd love to see the Museum again and the Baha'i worship house in #Waigani. Also the # orchid garden at #UPNG Botanical gardens

Wow. I was there in 1989. In fact, I spent New Years enroute from Guam to PM in the air. Jan 1, 1989. I stopped on the way there going to Sydney. I spent 24 hours there and 24 hours in my return. Place looks built up after 31 years. I recognized the yacht club in fact I took pictures I still have of Port Morsbey. I definitely remember the flowers and green foliage and surrounding mountains. People were real nice. SP beer was great. I got a chuckle on the KINA with a hole in the middle like a donut. I hired a driver that took me around. His name was Joseph. I still have his picture. I wonder if he's still alive. Thanks for your video and memories.

That’s great you remember so much from that whirlwind trip! The Yacht Club is doing great, SP beer is still really good, and the people are most definitely very nice. I made a necklace with a Kina with the hole in it :). Thanks for sharing your memories!

@@JenniTravel I too have a cool KINA story. I brought one back to GUAM. I knew this old man retired Seaman I would ruin into in town on occasion having breakfast at this joint. When I got back from Australia and PNG, I gave him the KINA with the hole in it and he was super amazed about this. Apparently this old man went to a bar later that night and was showing this coin around. And ironically to merchant marines on my ship that happened to be there. On the launch boat back to the ship They told me about the old man with a KINA coin that looked like a donut with a hole in it. And they put 2 and 2 together that I was recently in PNG and asked me if I gave that old man that coin that had a hole in it. I laughed so hard. I still chuckle thinking about that donut coin.

Your video shows PNG had develop on par to any modern economy. There is all kind of infrastructure n amenities. And also I see a civil society. Who wouldn't want to go there ?

I am from Tamil Nadu State of INDIA. Video is clear and crisp. You gave clear titles to the areas including Pan spitting(....Not Blood...) on a platform. It is a problem in my country also. You have not shown any Government establishment buildings, except for airport. The country is beautiful and you did well in your video. Thanks.

I was there again for another four months this year, but I'm no longer there. I really loved it this time! I did a whole lot more than what was in this video (I visited Rabaul/Kokopo, Loloata, Fisherman's Island, the Nature Park, scuba dived a ton, hiked Burns Peak, etc.) .
