all of the 'vintage Penny's' stores are too big and typically sparsely merchandised in their home area since they eliminated furniture & the brief reintroduction of appliances.

Boston Store operated a home store at Regency Mall from 2001-2004 for a short time period. Then they consolidated and the home store became Steve and Barry's in 2004. Steve and Barry's moved to a smaller location in early 2008, when they didn't need the large 2-story space of their original location. Steve and Barry's left their new location in late 2008 when the company first declared bankruptcy.

So before Tractor Supply, that anchor was Eagle Foods (i remember going there in the Early 90s). The family that owned the Chinese place eventually expanded to another building located at the intersection of Rt 25 and Lake Marion. They tried to keep both establishments open at the same time (utilizing the Meadowdale mall location as a carry out only). To be honest I'm not entirely sure if the Meadowdale mall location is still open. Every time I order Chinese I'm ordering carryout from their new location 🤷🏻♂️

Now the Kohls has officially announced they are closing their doors at SpringHill Mall i would love for you to post a updated "timeline" that you showed at the intro of this video. It would be nice just to have a separate video showing the timeline of the rise and fall of Spring Hill Mall.

Dragon Buffet left shortly after the mall closed and Kohls just announced it will be closing its doors this year. So soon only the theater will remain.

We visited this mall a few months after they opened and a handful of times afterwards through the years. It didn't seem like Charlestowne ever achieved more than 50% tenant occupancy. After the grand opening, there were wings still under construction, so we assumed that more stores were on the way, but they never seemed to materialize. Even in it's first few years, my friends and family referred to Charlestowne as "The Dead Mall" in conversation to differentiate from Stratford Square or Fox Valley.

I was at this mall almost 2 weeks ago and oh my gosh. There's barely any stores open (I'd say less than 10), only 1 of the 5 restaurants remaining in the food court, and JCPenney is the only anchor store left.

For a local mall, it was a damn good mall. One of my favorite things was when they had the big water fountain. Would always beg my mom for a penny every time we went so i could make wishes to get a dog.

Went there last friday with my kids because they wanted to see "the dead mall" so its like 99% dead..only few "stores" remain..AMC is still around and we did catch a movie (Wild Robot) prob for the last time in that place..its sad how everything is just dying around...i miss places like..circuit city, cocnut music, suncoast video etc.

I remember going down there a few times. It was really never going to work for a city like Des Moines. When Penny's and Yonkers left it was really just a nice food court for people that worked downtown.

I worked at the Elgin Sears store from 1975 thru 1980 at which time we moved to Sears Spring Hill. I worked in Div 1, furniture sales until 1992 when they eliminated the department and took a buy out after 17 years with Sears. Saw the mall open on day 1 (we had flag raising ceremonies etc) and sad to see it close now.

E-commerce has hurt a lot of brick and mortar stores. IMO the reason why Algonquin Commons hurt Spring Hill Mall is shoppers could pull up in front of the store they want to shop at instead of parking in a big parking lot and walk half way through a mall to shop at the one store they want to shop at. Then carry their purchase back through the mall and parking lot. The grass field in front of the theater was where JC Penny was at before they tore it down. It also didn’t help the mall when Sears and Macy’s closed as the commentator said in the video.

I remember this mall. I definitely remember eating breakfast and sometimes lunch at that Burger King. I remember walking through many of those corridors, especially that glass looking one. If I remember right it had like a store that sold like cell phones or something I can't remember. but I do also remember eating at that at the hub food court and the burgers and I think the Palmers is still there. last time I've been around that area which was last week... I know the demolition started for that giant condo Tower thing. now the former Burger King area is being used by a ballet studio or something. and the Walgreens across the street is also closed. and where the Yonkers building burnt down, is where there is a new little Park area complete with bench benches, porch swing like benches, lots of tables and a little basketball court and also a tennis court too. it's like right next to the EMC building so there has been some effort to try to revitalize some of that area.

Great video. My aunt and cousin owned a salon called "American Girl Beauty Salon" at 18 Meadowdale. I see it in some of your videos. I have so many amazing memories in the late 70's and 80's of hanging out there after school having no clue about women's hair, but enjoying the company. My aunt also was an assistant manager at the Woolworth's which is now I think where the Tractor Supply is located.

Update: the mall is still going pretty strong in 2024! The large Sears Grand space has since been divided up. The portion by the mall entrance is now a Round One arcade, which just recently opened. Another big portion is now a Hobby Lobby, which opened in 2022. But there is still a portion of it that still sits vacant to this day. Like I said though, this mall is still going strong. Only three anchor spaces are vacant: the former Bed Bath & Beyond, which closed in 2022, the former Saks Fifth Avenue outlet store, which closed years ago, and part of the former Sears Grand store I just mentioned. Aside from those three, all anchors are open, plus the mall still has many outlet stores, its fair share of big department stores like Marshalls and Kohl's, and even a Bass Pro Shops and a hockey rink ;)

I worked there for two years while in college. From day one the mall was in trouble. It was too close to fox valley mall in Naperville and Stratford square in Bloomingdale. The movie theater was not original so it had a problem drawing people there. In fact, i never remember a day when you could say the mall was packed like you could at other malls. It did have a gorgeous carassel in the upstairs food court and the sunken sitting area actually started out as a water feature.

I remember back in 2006...when MACYS said it had to give up the FIELDS brands and names, because they could not support another branding. Yet, they do it with Bloomingdales. They bought them out in 1994...about the time they bankrupted MACYS. MACYS did not "acquire" all of those department stores...they bought out the competition...and then ran it into the ground.
